    Flash has functionality to do file uploads with progress feedback. However, it's somewhat crippled in that it doesn't let you return data back, just that it worked or didn't work.

    If the PHP developers (high profile or otherwise) were capable of producing something like this, PHP wouldn't be the turd that it is. I'd guess he's coming at it with more experience in VMs (java, .net, etc) or compiler theory than PHP development.

    Let's say you have a few dozen illegal immigrants hanging out, watching a girl being raped. Some of them even taking a turn. Now, you can't arrest them for being illegal immigrants and you can't arrest them for rape, so the only solution is to create an entirely new law that wouldn't have helped but at least sounds good. Sort of.

    There is an upside: this law provides an absolute defense if you kill the legislators who thought this was a good idea.

    In the US, at least, the tax code is for collecting revenue. However the secondary purpose is social experimentation. So you get things like mortgage interest deductions, earned income credits, homebuyer credits, special exemptions for railroad workers, clergy, fishermen, etc. Congress (collectively) has no interest in simplifying it because their power is in granting favors to their constituents, donors, and friends.

    Almost everything he said is wrong on some level.
    • Chrome supports H.264 today.
    • Safari and Mobile Safari support H.264 today. On day 1, the iPhone youtube app played youtube videos via H.264.
    • If you look at actual usage statistics, the iPhone dominates in terms of actual usage.
    • Opera does not support H.264 and my understanding is that they don't want to
    • Microsoft recently announced they would support HTML5 but who knows when or how well. Ask yourself: will they license H.264 or push WMV?
