The reason these shows are dying is that they provide little real information, and they are not as enjoyable as other reality shows like cops or Judge Judy. Personally, I'd rather watch FOX5 than WCBS because they ham it up more and have less pretensions of journalism. 'Course, if I want to see some actual news, I'd go online.

As for tackiness, depth and subtelty, those are just other ways of saying "I like this one more than that". If you don't achieve any sort of perspective and acceptance of change, your going to be a tiresome grumpy old man in a few years.
Alcohol does not require alot of technology to manufacture. Just let something rot. Thats a bit different from manufacturing a large number of powerful weapons that won't blow up in your hand and have interchangable parts. Then you have to do it covertly (no big factories). Thats going to effect the price of the weapons - ie. Joe Crackhead can't afford one.
But you don't have to theorize about it. Just look at countries where they don't sell guns. Do the criminals in those countries manufacture their own? Are the citizens being constantly victimized by well armed criminals? No to both.

Regardeless of whether the Linux tools are as good as the Windows tools, the original point remains. The article claims there are none, whereas there are infact GUI tools for monitoring things like load. There are actually quite alot of them freely available, because the proc filesystem makes writting them pretty simple. Also, the article is dismissive of the unix scripting tools, saying they are hard to use. In my experience, a pretty window with graphs is great if you have nothing to do but watch it all day, whereas a set of scripts digging through system info and notifying you of trouble is far more useful. In general, I think the authors of the article mistake easy for them to learn and test with truely useful.
The article says the next odd day will be 1-1-3111, so the leading 0 does not count. Which brings up the point that this year has been chock full of odd days. The only reason we are going so long without one is that we are entering an even millenium. We should have been celebrating the odd millenium instead of squandering it, only to realize on the last odd day what we are losing!

Going from command line to GUI I found very little productivity gains until I started to take advantage of the consistancy between applications. I shift while selecting from a list, and I get a range of selection. Control click ads an item to the selection. Shift and arrow selects text. These little rules speed things up tremendously.
In this area, configuration is not really useful. I don't give a damn whether I hit Control-v or Control-f to paste, as long as I know which one it is, and I don't have to remember to do one in one app and another in a different app.
