Hehe. Oh believe it. I'm not going to say how long its been since I wrote any serious code out of embarassment about what I was willing to tolerate for some very valuable stock options. You seriously overestimate the competence of new media managemers.
Ha! I think I know who you are! Place I just left is still hiring people, but has developers sitting around doing nothing. Management doesn't seem to realize that the productivity problems of their engineering department may have something to do with management having no idea what they want to do or how to do it.
Not good enough...they can just look at you and your partners DNA and figure the odds. Better get the insurance before you find the person you want to have the child with.
"Who do I think should be first in line to pay for it? The victim. That's what makes them a victim. I know you don't want to hear it, but the world is a shitty place and bad things happen to people who never did anything to merit punishment from the gods. No economic or social system can change that."
Except economic and social systems like social security, insurance, the legal system, the FDA...I know you probably don't approve of all these things, but they do in fact change the shittiness of the world. There is less poverty among the elderly because of social security, so the world has become less shitty for them. Its because the world CAN be a shitty place that it is important that we take care of each other.
"The obvious solution to that problem is to eliminate government programs of insurance."
So, if you lose your insurance, to hell with you? Not too big on compassion are you? Personally, I'm willing to pay a bit to avoid seeing friends and neighbors dieing for lack of health care.
"It's not bad if everyone shares the risk equally. But if they share it disproportionately, then it's about as bad as communism"
I guess that depends on your priorities. If money is your number one priority in life, I suppose for you it is bad.
Thats not selfishness, thats minding your own business. In what way is it selfish not to want to watch video of a smoldering plane wreck, or hear some reporter ask a tearful mother how she feels about her child's death? This is spectacle, not news, and watching it does not make someone a better person.
The reason these shows are dying is that they provide little real information, and they are not as enjoyable as other reality shows like cops or Judge Judy. Personally, I'd rather watch FOX5 than WCBS because they ham it up more and have less pretensions of journalism. 'Course, if I want to see some actual news, I'd go online.
That can and has been said about any time in history. Most themes can be traced back to the dawn of literature. Its all in the execution. As for tackiness, depth and subtelty, those are just other ways of saying "I like this one more than that". If you don't achieve any sort of perspective and acceptance of change, your going to be a tiresome grumpy old man in a few years.
Alcohol does not require alot of technology to manufacture. Just let something rot. Thats a bit different from manufacturing a large number of powerful weapons that won't blow up in your hand and have interchangable parts. Then you have to do it covertly (no big factories). Thats going to effect the price of the weapons - ie. Joe Crackhead can't afford one.
But you don't have to theorize about it. Just look at countries where they don't sell guns. Do the criminals in those countries manufacture their own? Are the citizens being constantly victimized by well armed criminals? No to both.
I love it when people form political opinions based on watching Red Dawn 15 times as a teenager. Yeah, lets plan all our laws around the premise that we will someday be occupied by a foreign enemy. How about mandatory commando training for all teenagers, or add a bomb building chapter to our chemistry text books?
In my experience, most of the people worried about Joe Crackhead don't live anywhere near Joe Crackhead. I live in New York, and I see Joe Crackhead on the streets every day. Would I feel safer if everyone had guns? No, because I know Joe Crackhead is out of his fucking mind, and is way more likely to shoot me than I am him even if I had a gun. I'd rather nobody had guns. If guns are not readily available, the odds are higher that Joe Crackhead won't have one, which is much more likely to benefit me than the possibility that I might be able shoot back.
Um, where will the criminals get their guns when they are not for sale any more? I don't think the criminals are going to manufacture their own. Other countries? Most others have stricter gun laws than we do. Sure some will be brought in, but you won't have them turning up in the hands of every hot headed teenager or delusional drunk like you do now.
Sure it would. You get to apologize and submit to any lunatic with no sense of caution. Oh you wouldn't? You'd stand up to him? Not if you have a family to think about.
This sort of posturing is for adolescents, and is the very reason people should not have guns. Immature dimwits who thinks that someone cutting him off on the highway is grounds for death.
Regardeless of whether the Linux tools are as good as the Windows tools, the original point remains. The article claims there are none, whereas there are infact GUI tools for monitoring things like load. There are actually quite alot of them freely available, because the proc filesystem makes writting them pretty simple. Also, the article is dismissive of the unix scripting tools, saying they are hard to use. In my experience, a pretty window with graphs is great if you have nothing to do but watch it all day, whereas a set of scripts digging through system info and notifying you of trouble is far more useful. In general, I think the authors of the article mistake easy for them to learn and test with truely useful.
The article says the next odd day will be 1-1-3111, so the leading 0 does not count. Which brings up the point that this year has been chock full of odd days. The only reason we are going so long without one is that we are entering an even millenium. We should have been celebrating the odd millenium instead of squandering it, only to realize on the last odd day what we are losing!
If someone threatens to kill someone, you don't wait until they do it before acting. If someone walks into a bank with a gun, you don't have to wait until they ask for money to know they are robbing a bank. Yes you can and should be arrested for trying to commit a crime, even if you do not succeed.
Furthermore, he wasn't arrested for thinking he was having online sex with a 13 year old. He was arrested for crossing state bounds to have actual sex. They could not have arrested him for this if he had limited himself for role playing.
Images depicting having sex with children as a gratifying and positive experience are pretty likely to encourage pedophilia. Hate speach encourages hatred. What people say (or draw or whatever) does affect other people's opinions and how they act. If it did not, there wouldn't be much point in having free speach.
When someone willfully disregards the effects their speach has on others, they are behaving irresponsibly, and at a certain point that irresponsiblity becomes criminal.
Going from command line to GUI I found very little productivity gains until I started to take advantage of the consistancy between applications. I shift while selecting from a list, and I get a range of selection. Control click ads an item to the selection. Shift and arrow selects text. These little rules speed things up tremendously.
In this area, configuration is not really useful. I don't give a damn whether I hit Control-v or Control-f to paste, as long as I know which one it is, and I don't have to remember to do one in one app and another in a different app.

I'm not sure how much pleasure I'll get from B&N's virtue in the realm of software patents when they control the entire publishing world.

How the hell did this get through my moderation filter?

When Americans talk that way its scary, but when you guys talk that way its just funny.
