  1. Check the FAQ. on TiVo Hacked to Include Ethernet · · Score: 3

http://www.tivofaq.com/hack tells you how. Put the new drive in a PC, boot off the Linux boot disk and run a command. Put the drive in the TiVo. Easy.

  2. Storage on TiVo Hacked to Include Ethernet · · Score: 3

With a network connection you can get around needing a phone line...which is handy for some.

For others, it means you can mount storage on a network drive to store shows on. Adding a drive to a TiVo is easy... changing a drive for a larger one is NOT. This way you can just dump stuff on a server somewhere.

  3. How many people have ethernet? on TiVo Hacked to Include Ethernet · · Score: 2

Some do now with cable and DSL. But how many know how to NAT more than one box behind their connect? Few..VERY few. The dialup on the TiVo works just fine.... there wasn't a need for Ethernet.

But...hackers want Ethernet so we can do other things, like remotely mount network storage and such. These weren't in the original TiVo design as supported features, so why spend money on the Ethernet hookup?

  5. I think it's pretty obvious. on Compaq Holds Off On Crusoe · · Score: 3

Intel is about to release new low power chips. If these things are anywhere in the same ballpark as the Crusoe in power use, it isn't worth the change.

With the new Intel chips Compaq doesn't have to reengineer much. Customers already know what a Pentium is. How many know what a Crusoe is? And, there are no chances of an odd incompatibility with the Pentium like there may be for th Crusoe. Just seems to make sense to me.

  6. Probably not Intel. on Compaq Holds Off On Crusoe · · Score: 3

Compaq sells Athlons by the truckload in their desktops. Just go to any Best Buy and look.

With IBM and Compaq both now not doing Crusoe notebooks, I think there is some problem that we don't know. Either price, or a real performance issue. Maybe the final power savings in a full size notebook just aren't worth the effort required to make a new model like this.

I saw those benchmarks at the UltraLinux site but they are very old, and was curious if anyone had done some new ones.

I agree completely with the hardware. We can do so much more with a PC based server than with a Sun box. We aren't exactly using E10Ks here.

  11. We have a good reason. on Benchmarks For Linux And Solaris On SPARC Hardware? · · Score: 3

We need to do some things with a *LOT* of very small files. UFS doesn't handle this well and the only option we've found is to buy a copy of Veritas File System for every Ultra 5 box....which is $3K/license.

I can do everything we want with Linux and ReiserFS for much less money.

  12. This is easy. on Is the PS/2 A Disappointment? · · Score: 2

I go buy a game, pop it in my Playstation 2, sit on the couch with my feet up and play it on my 53" TV.

No video drivers. No sound drivers. No rebooting to Windows. No moving my computer to play it on the TV in some wack res. No playing it on my 19" monitor. No compatibility problems.

None of that. I pop in a CD and play. Plus, I like arcade type games that aren't real involved and there are just more of those on consoles. I still play PC games...mainly stuff that just wouldnt carry over well to a console like strategy games and MechWarrior games. But consoles are a LONG way from obsolete when it takes a video card that costs as much as the whole console to compete.

Someone mentioned gocode.com. They use our backend, and therefore do not infringe on the patent since we don't.

Yes, they are odd patents, but there you go.

  18. Employee Mail on UK Employers May Read Employees' Mail · · Score: 3

I'm always amazed that people are surprised that an employer is reading their mail. Users need to realize that the computer they use at work belongs to their employer, as does the network, the internet connection, and the service to keep it running.

Given that, I've never been anywhere that just checked everyone's email. The person they check on has been doing other things that make the employer suspect something is up.

But be warned, there are plenty of applications out now that scan email for keywords whether it be naughty words or things that may be confidential to the company.

Apache-ssl is just a patch to the source code. You end up with an SSL enabled httpsd binary. You run that for your SSL site, and the normal Apache for your non-SSL site.

mod_ssl is just a module that apache loads and uses when it needs SSL. Seems to be a cleaner design and install for me. I've switched several of our servers over... It also seems to be the "new" way of doing it. I know my O'Reilly book covered apache-ssl, but all the current online info I found referenced mod_ssl.
