When your enemies are successful, look at how your enemies work.
They use fear, artificially boosted stupidity, and disinformation. You can call it evil, but it works. It works very well. So the only difference between you and them is how far you would go, compared to them.
That's why crooks like that win. They just go further that you think they possibly could, leaving you stunned.
So what you have to do, is decide, if you want to stay on your level of morale, hoping and wishing that something stops them... or temporarily lower your morale below them, and let nothing stop you to fight them. (And I don't mean the stupid "go and shoot someone" type of letting go.)
I choose to find something that every politician has to act upon, because of their very nature. Something like "because of censorship, little children get raped *every day*. and I have proof, here is this documents!" or "censorship is a weapon of mass destruction, supported only by *terrorists*! are you a *terrorist*??" and so on. This is only low-level stuff right out of my head. To be successful, you really have fuck with their minds.
I hope that's the goal, because otherwise they are just working to make their people dumber.
Have you ever been to the UK? They used (timeless) IQ tests from the 70s to test people from today. And the average score people got was ~75. That's right. People there have an average IQ of 75, relative to people from the 70s! If you don't believe it, go look for yourself.
They are working on dumbing them down. And it works great! I think it's the food. Sugar eats the B vitamins, needed for thinking. In the UK, they eat fried Mars bars and the like. I think that's telling something...;)
If you're "doin' it right"(tm), you should not even notice that there is no Internet, because the only tubes that you are going to see, will be on/in some of those 300 girls (or boys, it you like them instead)!:D
Worry about the tube to put around that tube down there, and worry about the booze. That's all you need to worry about. At least if you still live.;)
The ultraportable seems nice. But without a tactile input, it's somewhere between an annoyance and completely useless, depending on what you need. Who can afford to look at the keyboard (which is tiny too, so you sure hit the wrong keys every now and then.) when doing real work with it, or playing a real game with it?
Sure it's cool for those mouse-only people. But come on...
Who needs a TV nowadays? Who even watches TV nowadays? I don't know anybody who really watches TV. They zap when they're veeery bored... only to discover that nothing's on, and well... hang in front of it for no reason, and feeling bad afterwards. Many don't even have a TV anymore. All the good stuff is available via torrent. And then it goes on my beamer and sound system.
TV, Fax machine, Morse ticker, broadcast (non-internet) radio, paper mail... those are all anachronisms to me. Sorry.
That's right. But I'm not talking about HTPCs. I'd not put such a thing in any room if you gave me $10,000.
I'm talking about full-blown PCs. With a big tower, with water cooling, two or three displays, and a 5.1 system connected to it. (At least here that's the case.)
And: Yes, I see girls! Not in spite of it, but because of it. Home cinema with popcorn, and huge screen, and bass that makes you tingle, is one thing. But also being able to play games with that complete setup in use really brings them home. (I have extension cables. Wireless is just too slow for many games. [Yes. Still!]) All I need is a Wii;)
No no... you're right. They belong to the USA. Because that's who owns most of the European leaders.
Merkel at least. Despite not being the backrub kind, she very much likes to go deep and hard up the ass of Bush.;) She even imitates his views and behavior.
Our Cheney is Schäuble, by the way. Mix Cheney's mind with that of some Gestapo-leader with an obsession for control, add a wheelchair, some hair and an evil look, remove some fat, and you got him. All he needs is a fluffy cat and an iron glove (or better a SS-Totenkopfstaffel glove).
For years, I just wonder, who needs a hardware player anyway? TVs are long gone or catch dust at me and most of my friends. When we watch videos, we connect a beamer to our computer/amplifier setup. Finito.
Ok, our computers are in our living rooms. We can't afford any working rooms. But still. What are you doing in your living room when it has not got a computer?? You can't even do a proper party, because you've got no music there. (Especially no shoutcast.com, which is the source of all party music dj radios since we discovered it back in the days.)
So you're telling me, that FLV is just another extension for MP4, or that FLV is another container around an MPEG4 container? If that were true, then i could find a tool to extract an MP4 from a FLV, or simply rename it. Both of wich is not know to me.
Do you have more information on this? prehaps a link to a tool, and/or a link to some details?
Wikipedia tells us nothing about the actual container format of FLV. Only that Flash (the program) supports (=imports) MPGE4, among others. And that FLV contains MPEG4/AVC video streams. Also among others. There is no information on the format of tha container itself.
The problem is that you're criticizing the GPL for not living in your perfect dream world. I think the GPL is way better, because I know, that in reality, businesses tend to rip you off, fuck you in every hole, and leave you bleeding on the street, (metaphorically speaking) if they just can! It's the rule of profit maximization. The first rule of every business. And more often than not, it's unfortunately the only rule.
And that's exactly why we need the GPL to enforce giving back something. Because in reality, businesses will not give back anything. Why would they? To lose money and then to lose against their competition who is winning because they are not giving anything back? Makes no sense.
But why would you care about your reality, if you can perfectly continue to rant about your dream world not coming true, while ignoring it?
The problem is that you seem proud, or at least OK with it. Don't you think that much caffeine had an effect on your metabolism and brain? Some of those "age-related" diseases you will get, or already got, are coming from exactly that much coffee. (The others come from raffinated sugars/starch, saturated (trans-)fats, denaturated protein, and micronutrient imbalance, if you're doin' them.)
Try not to take any of that stuff for a day. Still OK? A week? *Still* OK? I think you will be lying on the bed, shaking and sleeping all day long by that time.
You're a junkie. Same as those on alcohol, cigarettes or heroin. You just think because it's not official, it is ok.
As I said, this is what you seem like. I wish I'm wrong.:)
It's simple. Sony has multiple personalities. Haven't you never noticed how they sold DVD drives that had features in them whose only use was to make it possible to rip the very DVDs Sony sold?
I think it's pretty likely that the hardware guys at Sony are like most hardware guys: pretty cool (in geek terms). And that the media guys are just like most other media guys: crooks. Same think for marketing, management, and so on...
I always wondered, if a force-feedback "joy-stick" with the right software, would make a good dildo. Unfortunately the one I own is not shaped in a way that makes it possible to test this, if you're not a huge pain-lover.
Hey, connect it to the network, and get "teledildonics":P Now all we need is a "joyhole" for the opposite sex. (mine)
It is not illegal to download content at all! What is breaking a contract, is to actually give (offering is not enough) content to others (implicitly with no license), when the license under which you got it does not allow this.
And even if this happens, you still have to clarify how to handle that breach of contract. Only if you refuse to come to terms with the other party, you will end up in court. And then it's not only up to them to define what you have to do, to make that breach Ok. It's just as much up to you. And the judge watches that you two come to terms on a legal, and hopefully fair level.
Everything else is deliberate disinformation. Which of course is used to make you conform to their terms before going to court, and to manipulate the badly informed judge in court, so you won't get your part of the freedom, legality and fairness. And it's horrible, how many people here on Slashdot got already conditioned into that mindset, and are unknowingly spreading it.
FLV was never a streaming container in the first place. In fact, being nothing more than a unmanaged HTTP download that you watch while it still loads, it's a very crappy way of "streaming" data. I can do that with most formats, by downloading them to the disk, and then playing them in my favorite media player. I did this with MP3s since 1999.
I did not even have to re-download it, every time I wanted to play it.
FLV can't even come close to MKV in things of media containers. MKV supports multiple streams of video, audio, subtitles, or in fact anything that you can think of (eg a stream for some special effects device), stream tags, timecodes, cues, stereoscopy, stretching/compressing, attachments (eg cover, background information, reviews), segment linking and chapters. Oh, and of course, because it's EBML, you can add your own "tags" and functionality as you like, without affecting the compatibility to old programs. And it's made for very flexible streaming.
... to show, how ridiculous their DivX "format" is. What is DivX? It was an encoder for an old version of MPEG4. (Like XviD, 3ivX, and many others.) Now it's an encoder for H.264? Well, we already have x264 for that, and it work great.
This is a name, with a whole company behind it, is search for a purpose where there is none.
As long as they insist of "being their own format" (which they aren't, and never were), acting as if you needed their own player and file extension (for AVIs, or now MKVs?), and similar tactics, I will boycott them. Which isn't very hard, because I never needed them in the first place. I encode in Matroska + H.264 + AC3 or Vorbis for years now. And before that, it was XviD + AC3 or MP3 in AVI (for lack of other options).
It's exactly as you say. They like to dumb it down until literally every four year old, Joe Sixpack and grand-grand-parent can use it. Unfortunately they are ignoring basic nature: A) Life only does things because it has to. B) And there are always variations to that. So because of (A), people are "lazy" aka efficient and use the least effort that they can do with. If you give them something simpler, they will dumb down to that level. (AKA nature invents better idiots:) Then because of (B), there will still be many people that fall below the average level of the Gaussian distribution, and will have problems with it.
This continues in an endless cycle, only constricted by the rate at which Microsoft is able to dumb down their interface. (Which will get close to zero in an exponential curve.)
The problem is, that cigarettes (not pure tobacco. cigarettes!) are more addictive than heroin. That's no joke. Look it up. Most people think it's just a light drug, because of the weak effects it has, compared to other drugs. But it's just that cigarettes have an extremely bad addictiveness/effect ration, because of the 600+ substances that intentionally got added to the tobacco, to make it impossible for you to stop.
I say there's no right more fundamental, that the right to do with your own body as you please. But the second most important rule of a society is, to do no harm to others. And that's exactly what making tobacco so addictive, while keeping quiet is. It's tricking you into dependence on their product. So we should forbid that exact behavior. And punish the one who decided it in exactly one of two ways (in that order): A) Expel them, and disallow them any direct or indirect relationship to this country, while explaining very clearly what is non-acceptable behavior in this society. That way he has to deliberately continue despite knowing that we don't want it, to reach... B) If that does not help: Get your agents to shoot them.
Plain, simple, fair.
Unfortunately the government, and companies like that, are largely the same thing nowadays. So the government are the people that should be punished by (A), or (B) if really necessary.
Exactly. The intelligent designer concept is only working if you can't think 'til the next step:
1 Where is that designer?
2 What is he in?
3 Who created the designer?
4 Who created, whatever the designer is in?
5 GOTO 1

Yeah, as if choosing one of a set of crooks would actually solve anything...
What we need is a good old revolution. And I mean one with a new form of government following it.
I propose metagovernment.org, for lack of a better form of it (for lack of having time to create one myself. :( ).
