All users and manufactors of technolgy can easily be said to have a moral obligation to ensure that it is used in a manner that does not violate moral/ethical standards.
It can also be said that what is invented, can not be uninvented.
If companies like MS, Cisco, Nortel and Sun didn't go along with the Chinese govt, then they would have simply gone elseware, the technology is largly open and as such they could have invented their own version. Instead they went with the pre packaged version.
bottom line: don't blame the tech, its how you use it...:)
Smartcards and Australia Public Transport

here in Melbourne (Australia) we have introduced magstripe ticket for Public transport (ie one card for any bus, tram or train) - they (the company running it "one-link") had planned on introducting rechargable contactless smartcards to be used in addition to the magstripes, but that plan has been shelved because of management incompetency, even though the readers are already installed...
also - we have "e-tags" which are small little boxes that you put in your car to travel on the tollways in town without having to wait at any tollgates - its all electronic, billing is done by accounts or by creditcard pre payment, inspite of what some people winge about the system, it works very well.
An Australian ISP (Alphalink) was just awarded a Carrier Licence to undertake a similar programme in Australia - although they are only going to be deploying in two site with more to come depeneding on interest.
I hope telstra doesn;'t follow - if their performance in ADSL is anything to go by, their 802.11x performance will be flapping every 10 minutes!
I have never has a problem with PostgreSQL, its usability and speed kick over MySQL,
We have used out PostgreSQL server running millions of rows without a problem for a year or so now,
under MySQL I have performance drop off with only about 5000 rows...
Basically: whats the point in paranoia if you have nothing to hide anyway?
