I am a rather new ham radio operator, and I cannot believe the way the slashdot community is responding to this. With even a quick evaluation it should be clear that the benefits of amateur radio are more important than bpl. To me, the primary difference is that ham radio can be a challenge, and the internet is simple point and click. Try being 50 miles from a Utility plug, with a 8w 6meter radio. and have fantasitic comunications with people all over the states. try doing that with the internet. And you will see just how valuable ham radio is

I have a little something to add to this debate, I
am familiar with radars due to my career in the air national guard and avionics. current wi-fi technology would not interfere at all with aircraft radar because 99 percent of them TX on X-band (9ghz) as for ground radars, like the tps-75 AC&W radar, I can guarantee wi-fi would not interfere. because we employ anti jamming countermeasures that would easily overcome any fixed frequency device
As an avionics technician I can attest that consumer electronics is not the only field suffering. I work for a company that prides itself on quality, and most of the new units see my bench less than a year after manufacture, however there is a slow flow of instruments built 10 years ago that are just now seeing the shop for the first time. Kind of a horrifying thought for you while riding on that airplane
I know one thing, on my PSP fark pda edition works great. (have to use the psp for something... lord knows gaming on it is painful)
I have lived in kansas all my life. If it isn't people screaming about the teaching of evolution, its people bitching about music.
