  1. Gas Giants produce heat, correct? on Salty Ocean On Europa Could Mean Life · · Score: 1

So if we haven't sent a probe to Europa, how do we know what the temperature is? I was always under the impression that a gas giant produced heat. If Jupiter gave off enough heat, wouldn't it be like a mini-sun and possibly give its moons enough warmth to produce life? Or am I totally off track here?

Why? Because, if I remember correctly, the drivers are the same used in the GeForce (please correct me if I'm wrong). That alone will make for a better product in the long run. The more well-tested your drivers are, the better off you are. I've never had any luck with ATI cards. Last time I tested one out, Quake(1) wouldn't even show the textures properly. I hope it makes a great movie because the medium is a lot cheaper to use. If he makes great headway with it and people say to themselves "Wow, what a great movie - and shot on Video no less!" People will start to look at independant movies shot on video a lot differently. Depending on Lucas, it could go from "Nahh, not interested. It was shot on video." to "What is the story about again?"

The market is getting large, and like a bush, needs pruning from time to time - sometimes large branches need to come off in order to make the bush a great thing to look at once more. If we are all sitting here watching these e-companies take off and fly with no problems, then I'd be really worried that e-commerce is becomming something that we are all not really interested in just yet: our only means for buying everything. If these companies didn't fail, then we'd have to worry about those Mom & Pop stores failing, or those Malls that we grew up with (and where we sometimes met our girlfriends/boyfriends) would close down. These large e-companies do need trimming - We don't need to worry about cutting down the whole bush, but we do need to trim to keep the bush healthy and something to enjoy.

I should worry as well, because I make my living off of webhosting & webdesign - companies come to me for their website and I help them. I hope everyone succeeds in their endeavor, but I also know that not all can.

  13. maybe there can be an improved IDE Now... on Western Digital Pulling Out Of SCSI HD Business · · Score: 0

I know everyone keeps telling me about how good the new ATA66 is, but I'm a little skeptical -- because everyone I know that runs it swears it is as good as SCSI. I've run both IDE & SCSI over the years and I know that SCSI runs circles around IDE any day of the week. No CPU getting sucked dry, no worries about speed, and no worries about how many drives to hook up (if you get worried about hooking up over 15 drives, you have more worries than I'd like to hear about ;-)

I find the worst thing about IDE is the limiting of your drives to 2 per IDE interface. This is about the worst hell for me sometimes. I mean, a CD-Rom, a CD-Burner, two hard drives (because you know you have to much crap on the 1st and you'll ned to get a second). And when you realize both those drives are full and you've burnt everything onto disk with that slow assed IDE CD-Burner that you could dream about, a 5 IDE interface would be real nice. (of course, you could probably use an old IDE interface, but are they worth it?)

Maybe with a big gun like WD totally dedicated to IDE technology, IDE will get an even better boost than the ATA66? Who knows, maybe they have some tricks up their sleeves...

  14. I'm running my own... on On The Subject of Web Hosting · · Score: 1

I'm running my own webhosting company (insert blatant plug here). The biggest problems I've seen haven't been my servers or my mistakes (although I am human and have made a few here and there), but the biggest problems I've seen have been with the local telco. There is no alternative around these parts, so I'm kinda stuck with what I have. I'm not so sure getting a 2nd T1 would help, because I'd still have to go thru my local telco for everything to get connected, of course going with a different ISP (the big guys like UUnet, Qwest, etc) could help matters, but then again they make big mistakes too. I think it was Qwest that screwed something up about a month or two ago and lost access for Virginia, parts of Maryland, and New Jersey for several days. Given, everyone makes mistakes and even if you did go with more than one webhosting provider, and a seperate email account somewhere, who is to say that all your companies won't be using the same major ISP (if everyone is using, say, UUnet and UUnet screws up bigtime, you're out of service).

No webhosting Company advertises who they go thru for you to make a logical decision, because if they did, people might get the notion to look up the bigger company and see what kind of deals they can get thru them instead (bad news for little guy). So how does a small company compete with the bigger companies? They can't really offer better service, but they can charge somewhat lower prices and offer better and friendlier service. I've found that a one-on-one service has been a better selling point than big company "one night stands" where they lure you in, get your money and forget about you. An occasional *personal* email to your customers asking how their service is and getting their feedback goes a long way.

There is no *inexpensive* foolproof plan for webhosting, as long as there is human error involved, but you can pick out who treats you good as far as getting service goes. Who do you think will treat you better, the guy who's means of putting food on the table is his own webhosting service or the guy who works for a large company that makes millions from everyone and you are just another few megs of space on a server?

Webhosting Company: Crimson Networks, so that people don't have to put up with big company screw ups all the time. Given, everyone screws up and all companies great or small make big mistakes, but when you have a large company there is a certain extra lack of communication that can just ruin a customer's day. Someone cancels their site, or someone asks for changes to be made, etc, and for some reason they don't get accomplished as often as they should. Someone loses the backup tapes and everyone blames everyone else, instead of looking for them.
A small company that has a select few people working for them should always prove to have better communication amongst their workers and better all around service for their customers. I've dealt with plenty of big companies and how they treat the "little guy" is just plain wrong in many cases (I think getting a T1 installed from Bell Atlantic was the biggest headache I've ever had to deal).
I guess what I'm trying to say here is that small companies are usually better at getting things to work when things like this do go wrong. Communication is everything.

  17. Isn't this what Mark Twain talked about? on Intel's Anti-Athlon Campaign · · Score: 2

In several of Mark Twain's writings, he talked about "the mob" -- people that just band together and form a ruthless bunch because they are too afraid not too (see Adventures of Huck Finn chapter's 21 & 22). I think he calls them "cowards". I'm not saying anyone here is a coward, just part of a mob that they don't know how to stop sometimes. Someone shouts "So-and-so is trying to kill such-and-such" and everyone takes off with pitchforks, torches and knives to rally against the person pointed out as "evil" today.

I'm not saying a lot of this isn't true -- but damn it, business is business. If you can't stand a little heat in the business world (hell if you can't stand competition period) then you don't belong -- go back to doing something that you *can* do, like picking daisies or berries or something that doesn't recquire any form of mental stress.

Just don't complain about a company that has huge amounts of extremely loyal customers playing "dirty" when you are only a small pebble in a large field. Go out and start your own company that will defeat Intel, if that's what you really desire. Intel's doing MAN's work, making money. Doing that takes being a real man that makes real man decisions...

In my personal opinion, I'd like to get an AMD Athlon, just 'cause I'm curious about it's architecture and would like to see how good it runs.
