In theory, I would be happy with the world knowing everything about me, because I could explain all the things I did and stood for, excuse for all the things I regret and have people expect the same of me. In practice, however, the world is full of jackasses who don't understand that and who will be your teacher, employer, doctor, neighbour, friend's friend, stepmother, etc...
Now these jackasses lose privacy. Now if I am attacked on what I did, I can answer to them that they wrote "I love my poo!" ten years ago on a public blog. Therefore, I am a bit more flexible these days about privacy. I use crypto for important stuff, I participate openly in the pirate party in order to reopen the debate on whether anonymous access to a public space should be allowed (if not I want to have the right to hold a record of where every politician slept each night)
The loss of privacy is only temporary. The jackasses will soon discover they lost it and will want it back.
Mac OS 9 was maybe not the best of OSes, but to put it in "the worst of Apple" is kind of uninspired. In the worst of Microsoft, they have W98 ME, Vista and Bob.
In general the whole article just laughs at old products from a today perspective. In the top 10 are also the PowerPC and MacOS 9. I think it misses the point half of the time.
I don't know how it is in US but in France, in some cases where damages can be awarded, I heard some lawyers accept to take on some cases "for free" in exchange of a percentage of the damages awarded.
If Google didn't have the means of doing what they claim they would do, they shouldn't have said that in the first time.
I still hope that negotiation is happening and its result will comfort us that the "don't be evil" motto is a bit more that a motto but I am growing delusional day after day...
The technology doesn't go from zero. Just see how:
- Google translate web pages and correct erroneous entries
- Microsoft Word spots grammatical mistakes
- Theorem provers are used frequently
- package managers' ability to maintain interacting packets in a correct version
About what consciousness is, the progress made have been overwhelming but the media don't like this kind of deep issue and don't make a lot of articles on what we know about it (mainly : it is a psychological construct, nothing more, as can be seen throurgh its many dysfunctions. No magics there, sorry)
Our understandings and mimicking of the processes of learning, of visual conceptualization, of spatial sense, of semantical links, all become better. Granted, it went slower than expected, but it is a steady progress and the presence of a threshold where it becomes exponentially faster when you can "make" exponentially more "minds" to work on the problem seems quite logical.
That is a game of balancing things. These are also the kind of equipment where you would love to apply security patch as quickly as possible. Obviously this feature is intended mainly for security updates. Being able to patch immediately without waiting the next low traffic time can be very valuable.
Heh, to put it simply, people who lose money because of downtime will probably be happy to pay as low as $4 a month to prevent it. If two minutes down cost you $50, assuming a reboot a year is probably necessary, yes, it is worth it. And it is cheaper than having a secondary server.
And a lot of the constraints about being registered as a bank have less to do with real regulation that prevent chaos than with the current banks discouraging newcomers.
Make a list of the software that doesn't work properly with IE6. Try to evaluate the lost productivity. If hit by a virus that uses a flaw in IE6, count the time lost and put a $$$ figure on it. Then defend your case. Your employer is concerned chiefly about money. Make a case with monetary facts.
Also in some kind of companies (high tech startups) the argument "Google did X" is often very powerful. Tell them that now you are using a technology that someone like Google does not consider usable anymore.
Some feminists anti-consumerists people were handing interesting flyers for Valentine's day : "Make love, not shops !", "Stop buying me presents, I'm not your bitch !" I hate marketing-fests like Valentine's day so they struck a cord here.
Anyway, if you really wish to do something that day, just do something together. Go to restaurant, take a hike, go to a theme park, do sport (Valentine's laser game ? hmmm)
But before opening a project on sourceforge, you have to describe your proposal and they manually accept or not. That could be argued to be editorial control. This is not exactly a gmail situation.
The taliban are actually opposed to drugs production. While they were in power, the area of opium cultures fell down incredibely quick. It came back thanks to the war. The drugs lords are a faction different from the talibans.
A lot of peace nobel prizes (including Shirin Ebadi's) have been awarded to people who fight censorship and oppression, in the hope it will help loosen their enemies. I can say that in this respect, it makes sense.
I can picture a bunch of guys with "V" masks reciting something redacted by 4chan, concluding by "thx lol fags", saluting the king, going out while the assistance wonders what the fuck they have just done.
I also wonder how the initial 350 sets were chosen. I would have liked to see also a difference in cell and wifi radiation. Where I could believe that old-style telephones with a high emission power, held at two centimeters of the brain may cause cancer, I am doubful that my wifi router located at 30 cm of me could have any effect (square distance is a bitch)
That's where the law comes into effect.

Sure, portable game platforms are so unusual anyway...

What about a class action ? (As a French, I am very jealous of this feature of your judicial system)

Just to add to this : http://www.causata.com/blog/2010/02/so-you-think-machine-learning-is-boring.html
Well, you always have the possibility to pay more per month. I really believe this is the missing piece of the culture in the online world.
Hah! The Senate is too expensive !

I think this whole verdict is completely obscene. I have a whole community down here (www.partipirate.org) who thinks the same way.

That.
I am also a bit surprised that the Shuttle data are so confidential. Isn't that supposed to be a public research effort ?
Is debian alright ?
