  1. Re:I'd like to see a better text-based installer on Progeny Announces Graphical Installer for Debian Woody · · Score: 2, Interesting

Yes! by far the worst installer some people claim is that of OpenBSD's. But, its one of the most powerful installer I've ever used. Being a graphical installer doesn't help you much, cause 'UNIX is for programmers by programmers'. It requires some knowledge about your system before installing -- just pecking at the ENTER key would never lead to a good configuration. Never.

I had problems with install packages while installing OpenBSD (files were in upper case--I was installing from a DOS partition), but quickly I could escape to the shell, fix path and then I continued the installation. Wow! you could never ever think of that in a GUI based installers in any version of Micro$oft Windows you care to mention.

But, if the GUI installer allows me this kind of flexibility as in OpenBSD's installer, yay! we welcome it! :-)

Actually a new version mean addition of one or more new features. Bug fixes or performance enhancements doesn't make a new version, they only make a new release.

Linux 2.6 is never inferior to Windows 2000. Version numbers doesn't make good software. Its only for the reason that there is atleast one new feature is this release than the previous one.

  4. Re:NS Communicator 4.8? on Netscape 7.0 is Out · · Score: 1

Though the older Communicator is not 100% compliant to standards, it loads in a jiffy (atleast on *BSD, GNU/Linux systems). I downloaded Mozilla 1.0 and tried to use it, its damn slow!
It renders pages very fast, but is very unusable since its taking ages to load.

I always ask my friends/collegues to use Mozilla on Windows, but it takes ages to start, very very memory hungry, bloated stuff! They all return back to IE. When will we have a good open source browser, I don't understand!

Anyways I'm happy with Netscape Communicator 4.79 on my BSD box :)

  5. Watchout GNU/Linux developers! on Gobe Productive To Be GPLed · · Score: 1

Seems like Gobe is also porting their Be API too, which would give a good API to develop for both BeOS and GNU/Linux (who cares for Windows!).
    Can't wait for that!

Have you guys forgotten the look and feel of the BeOS GUI? It rocks, doesn't it. I would just love a window manager with the look and feel of BeOS. Its much faster than any other GUIs and much more usable than Windows. In fact, its probably the only best GUI than Micro$oft Windows.

  7. Free Software in business on How to "Open Source" Custom, Contract Software? · · Score: 1

I've tried convincing my chief for making our "yet to be developed" free software and failed. Many people here never think of making their software "free" (as in freedom and/or price) just because they think lotsa guys gonna look into your code, they'll probably use your code, write a better version of it and sell obviously becoming a competitor for themselves. You can't try to convince these people, you'll fail. So, the best thing would be leaving the decision to your client and incase you like to help the community by writing free software, do it in your free time. All the best.

How many times have you emailed a developer of a GPL'd program for some feature or help, and gotten a reply along the lines of, "You have the source code, you figure it out!"?

Never. Being a free software (free as in both price and freedom) developer myself (http://www.developercentral.org), I have made changes, fixed bugs upon user requests.

The software is done on the programmer's free time as a hobby, and the GPL allows others to use his work without giving them to opportunity to make money from it.

Yes, I do accept the fact that I'm working for a cmopany that doesn't do free software but at free time, at home, I write free software. Its like helping your neighbor, helping other people who can't afford to buy expensive stuff, helping developers who don't know how to do some stuff... and I really enjoy writing free software and I'll continue to do it. :-)

With proprietary software, you can't add some new feature, fix some bug I've made and stuff like that!

Writing free software is a way of life.
