ACtually, (at least in Windows) java is accelerated in the graphics dept. a bit as I remember reading that it's underlying implementation relied on DirectX calls.

Insightfull??? The poster displayed a horrible lack of horrible lack of knowledge about how linux's dynamic loader works. libsafe works by LD_PRELOAD, what this means is that while normally the program would look in libc.so.whatever for the function, it will first look in this program for functions to resolve. Also, it only has to do this once per program execution, once it resolves a function to the new libsafe library, it knows to use that for the rest of the program's execution. Therefore, the performance overhead is only the overhead of the extra code in the functions.

The Military's NIPRnet is not supposed to be disconnected from every other network. That's the job of the SIPRnet. the NIPRnet is for normal unclassified, not sensitive traffic. Even running crypto over the NIPRnet isn't considered secure enough. Heck, they run crypto over the SIPRnet for some forms of communication. DoD came up with the idea of the airgap for security, and believe me, they still follow it.

Doubt no more. I can confirm this. I just got my Corel Office Linux beta 1 CD. It says in the docs that WINE is in fact used to run the system. I haven't had time to install it yet, but I'll get it up and running to kick out a few screen shots.

You better make sure that the NDA (or BTA as corel calls it) allows you to do that. It was pretty restrictive about what you can talk publicly about their betas as I remember. I have to check it over again once I get my beta to see what I'm allowed to discuss.

Uhm, if you used Debian 1.0 you didn't use a released version of Debian, as the first released version of Debian was 1.1 (Infomagic fiasco with them releasing "Debian 1.0" before Debian released it, that's why Debian uses those code names now)

  7. Possibly a good thing. on Feds Want Access to Your Machine · · Score: 1

One of the main complaints that the US Government has had against encryption is that it makes wiretaps nearly impossible for agencies like the FBI to perform. If they are trying to get this law passed, it would appear that they have given up on that argument, because they could just as easily get a wiretap warrent for your phoneline as they could for your computer proper.

However, in my personal opinion, this plan wont work, because the truely paranoid (i.e. the people with something really to hide) will run a program like tripwire (possibly keeping the relevant data on him/herself the entire time and be check his machine on every access for modified programs.

It's sorta funny how all of our security programs that are there to make the computers/the internet more secure, can actually make this law almost impossible to implement.
