Yup. I re-read just about everything, and I'm probably on about the 20th time through on most of Heinlein's stuff. I admit to being kinda bummed out with everything after Friday for the first couple of reads; eventually I came to the realization that even his worst book (possibly I will fear no evil?) is well above the average; I was just spoiled by the incomparable ones like Starship Troopers, stranger, harsh mistress, have spacesuit: will travel, citizen of the Galaxy, Glory Road...
I also keep thinking of him in comparison to Hubbard; L. Ron set out to design and build a religion, bent all his imagination and creativity to the purpose, and succeeded. RAH "merely" wrote stories, and accidentaly created at least 1 religion, and improved many peoples lives along the way.
My last contract at a bank we did that; I won't mention the city, but the bank owned the buildings all around it and used them for storage. We had a bunch of contractors coming in for a workstation rollout, and the first day on the job I had them wander around the building, without ID of any kind, and just grab random computers and haul them across the street, using whatever explanation for it they felt like.
it was the NEXT DAY before any inquiries came in.
Oh, they also used the signs on the buildings you could see through the windows as admin passwords.
1) This is quite similar to WinXP as it is a harbinger of "leased" software; When I buy or suggest that others buy software, it is under the assumption that they are getting a product which will then be the property of the purchaser; If it doesn't allow you to move it from machine to machine as upgrade cycles or repairs require, you are not the owner of the product.
2) Some activities don't use corporate licenses, and aren't connected to the Internet, and never will be for security purposes. They can't use this software easily.
3) It's spyware by my definition. Spyware, and SPAM, are Evil.
4) the corporate version will be pirated just as fast as the retail version; pirates will scoff at the non-cracked or non-corporate version. So what is the purpose of product activation? Spyware. Unless they are going to drag peter out of retirement to actually make this crack-proof, of course.
I'm not a buyer, but I do constantly get to advise on purchases; My favorite AntiVirus software just got added to the WinXP category. "Don't buy it. Ever."
Problems is, that pretty much just leaves McAfee for the big corporate contracts, and McAfee has never been as, um, straight? as Norton.
Nothing I've read on/. lately has pointed out to me how different my upbringing was than this thread. The UK already has Cams on every street corner, restricted all personal weapons and illegalized self defense; now they are going to continously monitor you while you drive? Isn't it obvious to everyone that the next logical step in this cycle is cameras in the home? If this isn't a pure Orwellian state, WTF is?
When (not if, when) they try this in S. Illinois, they will have a revolution on their hands.
...And are you intentionally ignoring the fact that NO ONE on the planet is safe from the Bush / Ashcroft / Cheney triumvirate? Lets see; if you are a normal person in Mainland china, I could see you getting away with very publicly thumbing your nose at the New World Order; If you were a member of the ruling Elite of a couple of other places, say, India, Russia or possibly Saudi Arabia, I could see you getting away with it. But everyplace else? If they want you, and you aren't vital to them (or possibly a European Royal) you are SCREWED; it wouldn't be a smart move on the part of your government to piss off "The Sleeping Giant" or as I like to call us, "The People that are hated almost as much as the French".
But seriously, folks... I'm about a zillion times more paranoid than the next guy, and I can't think of any way this can be abused any more than a paper clip could be abused. Hang on a sec. Ok, I just thought of a way a paper clip could be abused. it's not pretty.
I got a -1 TROLL for this? I'm an MCSE. I work on Microsoft stuff. I'm not a complete idiot, I used to be a HP-Unix / Solaris SysAdmin, switched for the $$$. WinXP is just, well, WRONG for workstation duty; It's Win2kP with a nasty bloated interface, tons of security features removed, and a zillion bugs added. How the hell is this a troll?
I've been a MCSE for a while, worked a lot of contracts; the only place I EVER worked at that was 100% compliant was Civitas Bank, and thats only because they had a enterprise/corporate license plan.
Installing XP in a production environment? you must be flippin' insane. Win2k pro, NT4 workstation, even win2k3 (Insane, but not beyond redemption), but XP?
I shudder when I think about it.
FREENET=FREESPEECH (Even if it is kind of busted right now)
In fairness to all the crack smokers out there, I believe Mr. Torvalds needs to issue a public apology. It's a definite libel case, don't you think? do you think ANY crack smoker wants to be associated with this sort of activity.
Be fair, Linus.
FREENET=FREESPEECH (even if it is kinda busted right now)
Ahh, but what of those of us who don't WANT to be managers? That's where I feel myself currently being herded, what with recently breaking the age 41 mark... But all I want to do is make sure stuff works, fix it if it's broke, leave it alone if it isn't, and design it so it won't be a problem. I'd say if I had a PHD, I would not have the option to take a lower paying, non managerial job.
Unfortunately, it looks like you might actually have a informed opinion about this. I don't agree with it, and I think few others would either, but it still seems like you have given it some thought. So strike the snide AOL implication from me, it was rude. sorry.
Can Clinton run again? Sure, he was a scumbag, but he was the ultimate politician; I didn't agree with him at ANY level, but I respect the hell out of anyone who could pull off the scams he did.
The gun-control issue is why i'd vote for him; protecting our national "reset" switch is priority one. But then i'd vote for the ghost of Walt Disney before I'd vote for Bush again. He does seem too smart for the job, though.
Dean still has my vote; it looks like it was just a collosal, stupid mistake that was immediately fixed when someone with a clue found out it was a problem.
Here, let me translate this into AOL language for you....
ALL SPAM IS NEGATIVE ALL SPAM IS EVIL THERE IS NO SUCH FUCKING THING AS POSITIVE SPAM.
If the Republicrats hired a spammer to shill for Dean, then it was a stroke of genius; anything spam or telemarketing related immediately becomes invisible to me, and anyone else with a IQ over 80.
"hey! glad to see you? hows it been? come on over here and have a seat.. can I get you a drink? are you sure? cigarette? no? fine, fine... Listen, I'm glad we had this chance to talk privately for a second, there was something I've been wanting to tell you, and I don't see any reason to discuss it it front of just everybody, right? There is this little thing that everyone else on the planet has been aware of for quite a while now, that you just can't seem to get a grasp on......"
I'm a animator of sorts, and old enough to have played ALL the LSL games as they came out; your posting instilled in me a great desire to do some quick renders, preferably using a authentic looking larry, and bluescreened in Britney footage, then create a faux "news release" with screenshots, movie video, about the new LSL game, then come here and post a fake response saying "hey, thats being done" or something like that, then watch my server get melted by the slashdotting. The whole process only took about 5 seconds.
Is anyone from TechTV reading this? Fantastic idea, even if just for a tongue-in-cheek segment. I didn't patch my Win2k server. I disabled RPC, and using TPF, put a block on the Internet side for ports 135-139. I did this because I've been a SysAdmin on everything from Xenix to Solaris to OS/2, and a MCSE since NT4SP3; I never use a MS patch until at least 3 months after it's issued, because it's been my experience that the patches ALWAYS have some added "feature" that has to be worked around.
My personal Win2k machine, I left wide open, just to see how long it would take to get infected....Mon 6:45PM CST.
I just pity the poor XP owners. But then, I always have. Suckers.
One of the machines I have cluttering up my mini-farm is a IBM server 320; the manuals for it state that it's capable of handling 10 concurrent hits on one processor, 30 with both. While I'd say the most important factor is a big pipe, having adequate CPU power to handle the requests is sort of important, also.
And if you don't mind me asking, why did you make me your foe? am I doing something right?
This is something that's been bugging me for a while; I have to ask, why in the world does anyone bother to do anything but RAID-5? I'm not talking anything hard like doing it right with SCSI, just 3+ drives on a IDE bus with software based RAID-5. I can almost see using mirror sets if you don't have the slots to spare.
Yup.
I re-read just about everything, and I'm probably on about the 20th time through on most of Heinlein's stuff.

What are you, some sort of commie or something? this is obviously a mistake, the people of america DEMAND to be led and taken care of!
I wonder if this will have any effect on MIT? they already decided that mafIIA subpoena's didn't apply to them, right?
Besides, the students should be using Freenet, anyway.
