Ok - the above post can easily win the award of worst formated post on Slashdot. So without worrying about Karma, I am going to repost the info.:)
We develop open source software for ecologists to help them in their research. We have multiple
projects for this.
For example, KNB is a server that we maintain. It is like a library for datasets. Ecologists can store the datasets which they collect from their research. In turn search can be done on the datasets based on various attributes like geographic, taxonomic or temporal informations.
The server is based on a software that we are developing - Metacat. There is also a java client that we are developing for interacting with the server - Morpho. And both of these talk to each other in EML - Ecological Metadata Language. Cool stuff!!!
All of the above are open source and can used by anybody.

I am a India born Indian. I have spent time in both countries. And I would like to ask the following questions about this thread:
-> If accessing MS software is easy, why would I still be using 95 and 98? Why wouldn't I upgrade to next best thing. My point: when really did you visit India? Most of the people I know have upgraded to XP pirated software.
-> As already pointed out somewhere getting a CD which has all MS stuff - multiple versions of OS, Office etc for less than 3 dollars is easy. So give me one reaason the common man should go to Linux for his daily computer use. He uses dialup to connect to the net - so worms and virus are not so much a problem.
-> I dont know which IT people you talked to - but just mention to them that they have a job interview and they will tell you all the UNIX things they 'need to know'.
-> Mozilla - what is that? Mozilla in India - download all that over the internet connection - what are you thinking about?
My point is that they don't care what is out there. They are happy with two things - what satisfies my daily browsing & computing needs and what I need to know to get a job if I am IT student. That's it. Hell I dont even need to know that Slashdot exsists.
for detecting the contour, shouldn't something be reflected back to the device... that is either the device should assume reflective surface or reflective hands... only thing reflective on my hands are the nails... even if nails are used then while typing they can reflect the light in any direction.. any comments??
For those interested in Indian history, this is a good link: http://www.kamat.com/kalranga/timeline/timeline.ht m
It might be worth it to develop a website for setting up your ham radio set and encouraging school students to explore this new hobby option.
