  2. Cert Advisory CA-99-17 on Mac OS9 Flood Attack · · Score: 2

Don't know if this is related, but here is a link to the Cert Advisory discussing how Mac OS9 can be used as a 37.5 times DoS amplifier.

    Hope this helps.

Ok, you mentioned it, what is it, & where can I find more information?

I did a search on Google, but it didn't come up with anything.

Just from the context of the post I have an idea of what it might be, but I want to know for sure.

  4. Re:Morality != Egotism on The Genome Project and the Dark Side · · Score: 1

Back the f*cking truck up! My son (as I do) has allergies. He most likely got them from me. Are you saying that I'm a bad person for giving him allergies? I don't think so. I would never hurt my children intentionally. I am not maiming my children by not having them genetically engineered.

I'm sure that's not what he's saying. What he's probably saying is that if you had the ability to prevent your son from having allergies (EVER) with no repercussions and didn't take advantage of it, it is possible someone, even your son, could consider that negligent? If my parents hadn't gotten me vaccinated and I got some horrible crippling disease I would probably hold them accountable. If you have a tool to improve the life of your child, isn't withholding that tool just as bad as inflicting the consequence on them? Isaac Asimov's first law of robotics states:

"1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm."

This implies that inaction can also be harmful, which is my point.

  5. Truste is a Joke on TRUSTe and RealNetworks Wrap-Up · · Score: 1

What all of this Obviously proves is that Truste is a joke, and a tool of whatever large corperation who wishes to "feed" it.

My company was actually considering using their program to reassure our customers of our good intentions. Now We'd never use them, as it might make us look as though we disregard the rights of our users as much as Microsoft & Real Networks.

The EFF needs to try again, but this time give the organization some TEETH, and independence enough to not be scared to use them.

  6. Things Of Note: on AMD takes a big hit & IDT exits x86 clone biz · · Score: 4

I don't think that Intel is too happy about AMD's losses. For a couple of reasons:

    1) Wall Street expected losses of 250 Million, AMD only lost 162 Million.

    2) AMD's copper plant, a facility capable of producing .18 micron grade chips, is now online & AMD reports that they are on track to produce 1 GHz chips by first quarter of 2000.

    3) AMD's biggest problem has always been trying to get their average chip price above $100.00. With the new Athlon processor made to compete with the Pentium III, at same (or lower) prices with better performance, they will reach this goal, and also have the fastest processor on the market.

    4) All of this doesn't even take into account that the Intel Merced has been delayed AGAIN, and is now not even slated to be a large production processor, its predecessor will be, but its not scheduled to come out until 2001.

  7. Netizen Missing on Unplugged: The End Of Wiredness · · Score: 1

There are some things missing from /. & co. that I think that Wired did a good job in covering. Civil & Net Liberties (and how they're being taken away from us every day). The Netizen section of Wired was one of the only places you could find out about net-law and how it affects you. While /. does have news about net law, it rarely has articles that look at the overall picture. Thats what I miss about the old Wired.
