Actually, I think there really isn't any other way to debug the kernel than with printfs. It's not easy but they still do it because it's the most important part of coding.
And debugging isn't as bad as people who don't debug their code. I'd rather stick to my gdb and valgrind than do like those people did who now live in misery...
Debugging never ends and you don't get flamed if you debug your code. And if you do you're definitely working for the wrong company...
