  1. Re:Not without instructive precedent in the US on Brazil Voids Merck Patent On AIDS Drug · · Score: 1

If this is true, it would be at least the second time that the US has stolen a drug patent from Bayer -- the first one was aspirin. This country has no moral or ethical right to complain when Brazil co-opts the drug patent of a US company to help its own citizens. We've done it before and undoubtedly will do it again.

You probably ought to look at K12LTSP.

Two parent "volunteers" in the Atlanta metro area used this software to turn about 50 mostly useless Windows boxes into a set of servers and thin clients at an elementary school. As in your case the computers were old, slow, and running Win95 and Win 98. Now teachers are happy, parents are happy, principal is happy, and the School Board's IT Dept., which was _highly_ skeptical of the idea at first, is now looking at the installation as a "proof-of-concept" and giving serious consideration to making the transition at other schools.

What is happening here is very similar to what happened between the U.S. and Beyer, a German company with the patent for aspirin. The U.S. simply stole the patent. Didn't say, "Thank you;" didn't offer to reimburse Beyer so much as a dime.

  4. Re:help! This means you... on Consensus on Global Warming · · Score: 3, Interesting

Has the Northern Hemisphere been warming for at least the last 100 years? No question. But I would suggest that what is important is the *rate* of change -- the delta. Also important is the question: "How warm is warm?"
    Let me explain.
Circa 900 AD or so, Eric the Red was tossed out of Iceland (he and his bunch were a tad too rowdy for the Norse already there) and began settling what was known as Greenland in the last century. At one time I used to think that Eric and his son Lief ran not only the first but arguably the greatest real estate scam in recorded history. But I was wrong. For nearly 200 years Norse settlements dotted the coasts of Greenland, some of them more than 100 miles *north* of the Arctic Circle. These Norse settlers were not fishermen; they were farmers and survived by growing wheat! Hard as it may be to believe, but 1000 years ago the coasts of Greenland were indeed green.

So question Number One: How much warmer does it have to get before wheat can be grown and harvested on the west coast of Greenland north of the Arctic Circle?

Sometime after 1100 AD these settlements were abandoned as the climate began to turn colder. By 1350 Europe was in the middle of a "mini-ice age." It was still plenty damn cold when Columbus sailed the ocean blue.

Question Number Two: What was the rate of change as Europe cooled down from 1000 AD to 1350 AD? Is that delta smaller or larger than the one we are now experiencing?

I would posit that if the delta of climatic change today is not significantly (in its statistical sense) greater than it was from 1000 AD - 1350 AD, then it is hard to argue that human activity is the *primary* cause of the change. After all, the current warming trend has been going on for more than 100 years now and I think we still have a ways to go before farmers are planting wheat at Godthab or Holsteinborg on the west coast of Greenland.

Does it really take 96 hours to move 4 GB over a normal ADSL line? Your "normal" is a _lot_ slower than mine! My ADSL connection can move nearly 10 MgB per minute. At that rate it would only take about 6 hours, 40 minutes to download 4 GB.

  8. Re:Great Experience: Strongly Recommend on Laser Vision Surgery for Developers? · · Score: 1

    Good description of the procedure.
    Three points:
    1. Age is a significant variable. Under 30, eye tissue is more flexible and heals quickly; over 50, and the rate of complications significantly increases.
    2. Do NOT shop by price. Get recommendations from ophthamologists. One common complication, especially for older folks, is that the flap of corneal tissue that is cut (circular cut from 2 o'clock to 10 o'clock) does not properly conform to the eyeball when folded back into place. Sometimes wrinkles form. This is a Bad Thing. Only repair is for the surgeon to use stitches to pull it snugly into place. This surgery is performed with a microscope using thread measured in ten thousandths of a millimeter. The required skill level is off the charts.
    3. Contact wearers should check with their optometrist. Some will not be able to wear contacts into their sixth and seventh decades. Those facing this restriction might well consider LASIK surgery while young as the risk of "problems" increases significantly after 50.

The EULA for McAfee's VirusScan Professional v.6.0 contains these goodies:
"You [that's me] may not sell, lease, license, rent, loan, or otherwise transfer, with or without consideration, the Software. You shall not disclose the results of any benchmark test that you make of the Software to any third parties without MacAfee' prior written consent. Customer agrees not to permit any third party ... to use the Licensed Program in any form."

This means, that should I leave the Windows/M$ world behind for Linux I can't even give away this software, much less sell it with the computer. Hell, according to this EULA I can't even tell a friend I think the software is worth the money (or NOT as the case might be) without first clearing my "review" with NAI's legal department.

    But wait, it gets worse:

"McAfee reserves the right to periodically audit you to ensure that you are not using any Software in violation of this Agreement. During your standard business hours and upon prior written notice, McAfee may visit you and you will make available to McAfee or its representatives any records pertaining to the Software to McAfee."

Obviously NAI thinks you can waive your Constitutional Right to freedom from warrantless searches.
