You're always going to have the normal guy who doesn't care about "branded" CDs or the slight (and sometimes perceptible) quality loss of MP3s over CDs...he goes ahead and burns his MP3s to a 5-cent CDR and listens to it anyway.
There's also the guy who uses MP3s to sample new albums but wasn't falling for the "CD as a sample" trap before - he just wouldn't buy a new album if he didn't know it - he'd wait until perhaps he got a chance to hear it as a friend's place, or just do without. This guy actually buy more CDs since MP3s have come along.
Are there enough of these guys to balance the others? I don't know, but there are definitely enough that they shouldn't be ignored as a part of the market.
If I'm understanding the concept correctly, (The links are already slashdotted) they were also used in The Curse of Monkey Island, one of Lucasarts' excellent graphical adventure games.
Well, Their FAQ says they're working on a version that will work on RedHat 7.3 and that is LSB compliant, so if I'm figuring right, that should mean it would work on other LSB compliant distros.
That's what I do. Many stores allow you to punch in a phone number instead of swiping your card. I started a card with Safeway and will soon start one for Albertson's and give the phone number to everyone, informing them that if we all share the card, it prevents individual tracking.
The card number I use (and I encourage everyone else to use it, too) is: 510-843-7226 - that's 510 (my area code, feel free to use it or start one in your own area code - my thinking is more people on a given card is better, no matter what the area code) THE-SCAM. Don't use anyone's real name or address - you lose out a little on coupons mailed to card members, but it's a small price to pay for privacy.
One of these days, I've been meaning to put together a website promoting community 'rewards' cards. If anyone gets to it before I do, let me know, I'll gladly post numbers for any store where I get the chance to start one.
Is just what about direct monitoring of traffic sounds cool?
To me it sounds roughly as cool as a mandatory government email proxy so that all email can be directly monitored (For our own protection, of course).

...to ask that question.
But you will get a better response if you ask in a forum where it's not off topic. I think Ask Slahdot is a better bet. Give it a try there, I think it could genreate some good discussion.

If you mean which of these don't need to write to the hard drive in order to run, The answer is all of them. But one of the advantages of these is that they can write to the HD for rescue repair work, or, at least in the case of Mondo, for restoring a backup. Russ

The Reg had an article last week about this entitled MP3s are good for music biz - Forrester. Worth a read.

Janis Ian wrote a very good article on this subject.
Interesting to see an artist's perspective on the matter.
