I use Debian GNU/Linux on PPC (Macintosh Hardware) so RH 9 matters not to me.
However, after seeing more and more of their money grubbing ways (AS,ES and the other subscription income methods they have started lately) I downloaded bit torrent and the RH 9 ISOs to a spare box and plan to leave it up and running all week. It's on a dedicated 100Mbit ethernet line. Take that... RH Marketing bastards!
I can remember when RH used to be fun, when it used to be for the community... those days are long gone. RH 9 will be EOL w/i no time. Why withold it from loyal users at all?
Power to the people... that's what FREE software is all about. Thank you RMS! Thank you!!!
where's my "complete GNU system"
How about Debian GNU/Linux? It's 100% GPL if you install it w/o all the non-GPL stuff (and it is installable that way). Just becasue the FSF didn't provide the kernel doesn't mean that Debian is not a "complete GNU system"
When you think about it, there are lots of "complete systems" that use FSF software, netbsd, freebsd, openbsd, MAC OS X, etc.
IBM's PPC 970 is the obvious choice for Apple. It can run 32 or 64 bit programs, shares backward compatibility with current apple hardware, and will debut at 1.8 GHz... it's going to be a superb platform. The cadillac of personal computers. I expect it to be rather costly though.
That's right, not every app on the system would need to be 64 bit. For example, system apps (like listing directories, searching for files, network config apps, etc.) can all still work wonderfully as 32 bit programs.
It's the big cpu and memory intense programs such as 3D graphic modeling that could really get a boost from 64 bit processing. Whenever an app like that can eat data in chunks that are twice as large (32 to 64) there'll be a performance boost.
Dude, look at the big picture and you'll stop worring. I mean, we're due for an extinction size near earth object impact anytime now (like the one that got the dinosaurs).
When you look at the BIG picture, it makes the small crap we worry over each day seem insifnificant, no? So, the next time you get fired or someone does you wrong, take ease with the knowledge that one day a near earth object is going to slam into the earth and kill most all of us... if we humans don't nuke each other before. Cheer up!
RH upgrades are simple! Just get the latest ISO, plop it into the CD drive and go! When it finishes, you have the latest release *and* all your old files and configuration. I can do 20 uprgades in about 4 hours with 5 sets of CDs.
CS should not be about programming! Programming is a tool and, with no disrespect to the hard core coders it is a minor part of a CS. If they are learning project management, design, testing, formal specifications, AI, etc these will stand them in better stead in their careers than "just" knowing all the C++/Java/Perl... libraries.
Well Said! CS is applied math, nothing more! If someone wants to learn to program a certain popular language, then they can learn to do it at a vocational school or junior college, not at university!
CS is applied math, that's all. If you want to learn how to program in X, Y or Z language, then go to a junior college or a trade school. Computers are to CS what telescopes are to astronomy.
Nice article. Perl and Python are catching up with the big, compiled languages, especially Python... It's object oriented like C++ and java, but it's much easier to pick up and actually use. With Python, you can get right to programming and forget about the crazy syntax rules in C++ and Java. The only downside to it is that it's interpreted, but that doesn't matter so much now-a-days with 3 Ghz CPUs.
After Office 11 there might never be another "Pentagon Papers" type scandal because the government could just cut printing rights to sensitive documents.
Ever heard of 'screen print'?
I could fire-up VNC, from my Linux desktop, view the remote Windows desktop and do a simple screen print of the document.
>IE killed Netscape, but Microsoft hasn't started charging for IE yet, have they.
You're the kind of guy that companies such as MS love. IE is not free. You *have* to buy their operating system (which costs lots and lots of money) to run it on Intel hardware.
Was Microsoft the founder of the BSA? It seems kinda odd to me that only a few dozen companies are a part of the BSA and that most of those companies, with the exception of Apple and IBM, have close ties to MS.
Microsoft, or some other groupp that has an ax to grind against Free and OSS, is behind these trojans.
The goal? To do this exact thing to the Linux kernel or perhaps the samba project. They badly want to discredit Linux, and they will attempt to do so by any and all means. Call me paranoid, but what I say is true.
We must counter this life-threatening attack quickly or it will be a huge set-back or perhaps the begining of the end of free and OSS software.
You're arrogant and you don't understand economics.
Society is more efficient when people specialize. You write programs, I build houses, my wife writes books, etc. Since I build houses, I don't need to know the structure of a sonnet (my wife is an expert on that). Since I don't program, I don't need to know how to make a computer print "Hello World" on the screen (you can do that).
When we all work together within our specialty, the world is more efficient. We don't need polymaths as their knowledge is typically broad and shallow. Whereas specialists have narrow, but deep knowledge that benefits everyone.
The structure of a sonnet? The second law of thermodynamics?
You must be kidding, right?
Most Americans don't know what rights the First Amendment guarantees. Most Americans don't think they're a cultured know-it-all, polymath (such as yourself) who can discourse on anything.
Because that country invented the Internet. It's the most poweful, the most prosperous, the most democratic country in the world. Where would you rather the root servers be... Iran, Iraq, China, Russia?
Use your fucking mind.

OMG, we're all brothers...Dad? Dad???
This is a damn good question. Mod parent up! Can anyone in the know provide an answer?

Debian use tried and tested software, their kernel sources contain quite a few bugfixes too.
Debian uses the vanilla kernel from kernel.org.
GNU/YOPER Happy now?
No, that should be:GNU/YOPER
GNU/Happy GNU/now?
GNU/Oh GNU/sorry, GNU/it's GNU/Stillman, GNU/not GNU/Stallman.

wtf are you talking about? Thats like saying that a car stereo someone gives me isnt free, because I need to have a car to install it in.
That's a dumb comparison. A more realistic one would be: "I'll give you a car stero *if* you buy one of *my* cars."
The stero wasn't free because you *had* to buy their car to get it. Now, if you think that's free, your stupider than you sound.
Hi Chris, how's it going?
>IE killed Netscape, but Microsoft hasn't started charging for IE yet, have they.
You're the kind of guy that companies such as MS love. IE is not free. You *have* to buy their operating system (which costs lots and lots of money) to run it on Intel hardware.
So, do you still think IE is free????

Does anyone know who exactly is behind the BSA?
Thanks!
No, no, no!
They should call it LinuxNT
