I think that it is the person who is sharing's resposiblity to keep their mp3 collection correct and in order.
I have at various times, had over 4000 mp3s at once, and always kept them sorted well enough, as well as having the correct information- so it's not impossible for the average user who has 200 songs or less to keep their track titles correct.
I have seen too many users who had the songs name matched up with the wrong artist (which is some cases is disrespecting the artist that it was labeled for), as well as bad rips, clicks and pops, half tracks, etc...
For the most part, unless you have 200gb of mp3s (as one person I know has, and they are VERY organized), then you should be able to keep yours in order. It is your resposiblity to do so, you owe it to the community.
I wish that someone would figure out a way to have a checksum for the mp3, to make sure that it is finished, and without viruses.
As a final note, I have noticed games and other things being mislabeled quite often as well on the filesharing services. I did a recent test of this (on an extra computer). I found a few viruses in the lot, but asides from that- I attempted to download GTA3 (I own a real copy of it, so i don't feel bad about attempting a download that I won't use.) and got Need For Speed: Porshe Racing instead, and a monster truck game on another try. I tried to download the Sims Hot Date (also owned by me), but found that it was also bogus, didn't work, etc... this occured on many files.
Now the easy solution to this is for me to use IRC to find stuff and FTP servers... which I do for the most part, and find it FAR more reliable. I simply wonder if the gaming companies are also flooding the services with crap...
Concerts are definately the future or the music industry. Of course just about every artist today has concerts, but that's where the money will be generated if all the record companies and distrubution go to hell.
Anyway, most artists make a great deal of their income at concerts. Record companies don't tap in as much, the tickets are 60 dollars, instead of 1x.99 for the CD at the store.
Another thing that will happen is the dissapearance of 'one hit wonders'. They will go the way of the typewriter, because people will only download their stuff, not go to their concerts, etc.. I mean don't most of you buy the CD anyway if you REALLY like it? I have many CD's that I bought that I have downloaded the whole thing, just as a 'thanks' to the artist. But do you really buy someone that only has one good song? Or go and sit through a three hour concert with only liking that one?
This whole thing will really change the industry even more than most people realize currently
I mean really... when these are either too filmsy to hold up to the force of./ or have logins like this... is it legal to post these? Not that I care. Hey even Karma Whoring is ok from time to time...
Yea, only 1 out of 100 artists that get signed actually make it. This is why the companies try to make so much off of single artists, because the other 99 were only liabilities.
How many of you know someone who has 'gotten signed' to 'some big record label' but never got anywhere?
Hey, it was an early one I made:) I know i could have updated it easily, but I didn't. Now I know to turn off the services like LPR, but truthfully, I wasn't very smart at the time, but then again, we all gotta start somewhere.
A company I worked for on and off for a while had an AS/400 system that was accessed by about 50 users from up and down the east coast daily. It has worked almost flawlessly for around 18 years, and hasn't had a single breakin of security.
however, i did set up a Redhat box for IP masq and firewall operations, for their desktops- and it got a virus/worm that looked like a hacker through the LPR module that needed to be patched.
Patches are always coming out for linux, and they CAN be hard to keep up with in the scope of things to do in a day, but AS/400's aren't so flimsy in comparison. Great uptime too...
And for security, just try to look up "AS/400 Crack" or "AS/400 Backdoor". You won't find a ton of sites (perhaps one or two) outliing exactly how to get in. In addition, you don't have "Steal this computer book" outlining how to get into the newest module that has a hole in it. Nor do I get emails weekly from IBM (like I do redhat) about security patches.
Now that being said. I LOVE linux and would much rather use it than that old bag of hard to use junk and hard to program AS/400!!!! AS/400's cost too much too...
While my boxes for redhat have held up better than a few MSFT boxes, they still are a little beat up around the corners. I even got one for half off by haggling because it was really beat to hell.
Well i guess it didn't break, just bent in and tore some.
Downscaling some of the backbone perhaps? Sell parts on Ebay? Get it down to the point that it is profitable again. It sounds like they built too good of a network for their own good.
Too bad./ and it's network can't buy it. That would be a pretty awesome thing for them to have. Somewhat useless if it wasn't really utilized, but cool.
Perhaps all the european./er routed though there they could really pound sites when they are first posted about
Would it be possible to use a Laser based connection travelling at high speed across something line of sight like the Charles to connect 2 places that are more than 3 miles from each other, or just in case you wanted a higher speed connection? Use redundant (2 or 3) lasers aimed to get a constant connection?
Think if we (wireless users) did set up a peer to peer network, that was free for usage. Hmm... it would take alot of money seemingly, but small parts of that could be possible some day.
I am not sure how low they are looking at capping the bandwidth before $$$ comes into issue- I heard between 5 and 10gb/month.
Just for general reference- with 9 computers hooked up, a sane number of mp3 downloads, and a few programs and movies downloaded, in the past 23 days (according to my router) I have passed about 6 to 7 gb of traffic in, and about 1.5 gb out traffic.
What is everyone else here using. I am not running a server of any type to the public- so don't tell me that your FTP server is pushing 50gb/month, that's not the type of thing I am looking to see here.
BTW, i am on Time Warner Cable's Road Runner service.
It doesn't have my electronic music stuff up as of the moment. But it should have it up by the end of today.

In all seriousness, don't try to download mp3s of this stuff. You probably want to get the highest quality medium possible- 24bits preferably. Mp3 would kill this stuff (or produce other weird sounds for me to play with when normalized...).
Quality really isn't an issue today. I use only condenser mics and high quality preamps for this type of thing. I really need a better preamp for my own use and a better AD convertor, but oh well
Csound is another great way to create electronic music. check out www.csounds.com. It is a programming (well perhaps more scripting language) that you program exactly how you want the sounds to work. You can use any algothym possible! An audible lornez attractor is really interesting.

Simply because most the composers, including myself, use Protools . Protools was created for, and best done on Mac . Believe me, i use it on a PC- its SOooo much better on the mac. There is alot of other software, that is just for mac. DirectConnect, many software synths, newest versions of everything.
Its a sad state, but the Mac running OS 9 (protools doesn't support X at all) is just about the only way to go, unless you want to program CSound .
I will be living in Boston next year, probably in Alston or thereabouts. Anyone interested in getting Boston 'unwired' with me? Set up a few points throughout the city? I think it would be a great project to get most of the area for 4 miles south of the Charles to be wirelessly accessable to some of us!

Lynx doesn't support popups either, but that's a good feature. Real webprogrammers don't make pages with popups...

Perhaps the Hackers over there will have a 'hostile takeover' of the backbone, not like anyone will really notice for a while....
BTW, when is it going to be an unmanned backbone? That's when the crazyness will start...
br
Perhaps some US company that is looking to expand it's presence overseas (Like AOL) might buy the backbone. Just a possiblity
Actually, the batteries are ok, I have tested them with a multimeter, and they seem ok
Could someone please mod this down a bit? :)
No hard feeling zorg, just the third post thing..
Does anyone know anything about fixing, or getting fixed a UPS that doesn't work that I got for cheap?
I can give more details if needed
Please, everyone take caution when working with high voltage and moreso, high ampre compenents. We don't want any fried ./ers

Wasn't TimeWarner/AOL supposed to drop their Road Runner Service upon merging or be considered a Monopoly???
I am posting this using RR right now, and my check is going to Time Warner... so i guess that didn't happen
What did happen to that? Aren't they a monopoly now?
