  1. Re:Thank GOD I was born in 1976! on Generation Wrecked · · Score: 1

According to a piece by a social economist (I don't remember who) on NPR a couple of years back, Generation Y started in 1979. The defining trait of this generation is that we (I'm '79) were the first to have computers throughout our lives. We did not have them introduced to us, they were always there. I know there are many, many exceptions to this, but ours was the first generation where this was possible, and that fundamentally changed our thought processes and our belief in/adherence to new ideas and ways of doing things. We were, apparently, the first generation to assume that a new social order would be better than the old.

There's a distinction between that kind of faith and the hippy generation of the 60s. They were a relatively small (in overall percentage terms) group actively trying to effect social upheaval. We, on the other hand, just assumed it would come naturally.

Lord knows what the fallout says about us. I graduated into the middle of this, but I still have the starry-eyed tech viewpoint of my Palo Alto youth.

    I'd better turn to drugs.

I enjoy hearing of the ways that Microsoft proposes to screw their clientele. I'm a Windows user, and will be until another OS, whether it be Mac or Linux etc., starts getting all the first-tier games before Windows. I don't do anything else with my PC, so why switch?
If Microsoft can manage to alienate the game playing crowd enough, more and more developers will transition to Linux development, and I can switch too. They are, quite charitably, squashing the chicken/egg problem in PC gaming.

Why would the theater be in any way responsible for this? I thought reception was a service of the provider, and I don't remember my provider ever guaranteeing reception in any area. They have service areas, in which they have their towers and such, and they tout those in their marketing literature. However, when I miss a call, I am responsible, since I was in an area that didn't get reception.
Also, I don't get reception in my room at home. I get it on the porch, though. Does this mean I can sue the owners of my apartment building?

  5. Java Book on General IT Books? · · Score: 1

The best primer for Java (and basic aspects of OO design) I've seen is Ivor Horton's Beginning Java 2, from Wrox. This book surpasses any other beginner book on the subject by leaps and bounds. Based on my informal tutoring of about 5 students in the language, it can't be beat. I would also recommend Ivor's books for Visual C++, simply based on his performance here (I haven't read them).
