  1. Re:The Cost Of A CD on RIAA Wants Taxpayer-Funded IP Police · · Score: 1

Agreed, most music CDs are a rip-off at half the price at which they are sold.

As for PR costs, i wonder what this says about the music they are trying to sell. I mean, i have made it my policy to buy the CDs i really want to have. No .mp3 or .ogg can catch the sound. They have losses, and besides, its unfair to the bands. But the crap i listen to once, and only once is not worth buying IMAO. I mean, the very fact that they have to such huge amounts of money to get people to buy anything is testamony of how many people really want them.

On the contrary, i like the final ones best... they provide a lot of insight to what really goes on inside the characters

  3. Re:Evangelion on Evangelion Reviewed In LA Times · · Score: 1

The astonishing (and frightening) thing is that it does actually make sense in quite some ways. Without wanting to spoil anything for anyone who has not seen the series yet:

The main trio (Shinji, Asuka and Rei) bear a very close resemblance to the freudian instances of the human mind, with Asuka resembling the super-ego, Asuka the Id and Shinji the Ego torn between their pulls. Especially in the last 2 episodes of the series (not the movie) it gets very clear that the entire series is not about robots or fighting some alien race, but actually about the process of coming to terms with ones identity... Perfecting humanity indeed.

So far i am not sure i have interpreted all layers of meaning and/or symbolism, but i am pretty sure this show can teach anyone that Anime need neither be shallow nor boring.

  5. Probably not a good idea on Will Robots Cheer Up the Elderly? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Elderly persons often have problems keeping in touch with family and friends. This probably makes things worse, since they no longer have a reason to leave their home, and the "electronic pets" can by their very design never have the complexity of a realy living creature. If you have a dog, you have a lot of responsibilities, which keep you upright. An electronic pet does basicly not need more then fresh batteries every few days. And a mind with nothing serious to do decays all the faster

Well, but basicly it is still a top-down approach: We have a set of observations, and try to make a model (mathematical or otherwise) that fits them. But since we don't (can't) know the entire picture it is only deduction. In so far Newton and Einstein did basicly the same: Look at nature and postulate new theories how it all works.

I did not study physics, but a lot of the more advanced theories sound pretty... fantastic. But then, the Earth-moves-around-sun did probably sound like complete Fantasy to the people in the dark ages
