  1. Re:Riiiiiight. on Want To Get Kids Interested In Programming? Teach Them Computer History · · Score: 3, Interesting

I honestly think the interest a kid will show is proportionate to the passion he feels in the words of the teacher.

  2. Exactly what I did on Want To Get Kids Interested In Programming? Teach Them Computer History · · Score: 5, Interesting

Given the opportunity to teach Informatics to Diagnostic Radiology Imaging students, almost all in their 20s, I decided to start with a first lesson about history of computing, and I started from the ancient times when the most sophistcated calculator was the abacus. Guess what? Almost all of them listening, interested about something that's not really about their business.

  5. Turn water to blue, clear, blue, clear... on Surprising Science Demonstrations? · · Score: 2, Interesting

When I was studying chemistry I had fun with this. Sorry, I'm used to MKS system. Prepare 1 liter of solution containing: 10 grams of NaOH 10 grams of C6H12O6 (any of the 16 works, only changes speed) 1 drop of 1% solution of Methilene-Blue (well, I've never used a drop, but directly joined a couple of grains) Fill half a bottle and close it. Within a little time it seems clear water, since NaOH+C6H12O6 turns Methilene-Blue to a not-oxidized state, but as you shake the bottle, the Oxigen takes it to blue again, then it turns again clear... You can repeat it some times; open the bottle if it doesn't work anymore: maybe you've consumed all the Oxigen... Have fun!

  6. Why not a wireless solution? on Last Mile, High Speed Help for Upper Michigan? · · Score: 2

According to Motorola site, Canopy is a low-cost solution (if compared to 802.11) to deploy a wireless broadband ISP. No license needed, it operates on 5.25-5.35 GHz and 5.725-5.825 GHz. 10 Mbps, 2 miles Multipoint, 20 miles P2P. Somewhere (not on Motorola site) I've read of $30.000 for a starter kit that supports up to 200 users.
