  1. Re:Good Concept but too much equipment on Virtual Sword Fighting · · Score: 0

You hit the nail on the head. The graphics dont need much improving as compared to the physical interaction portion. When I played VR about 10 years ago, the characters seemed to be composed of about 100 polygons, if even that, but it was still fun.

Graphics dont matter, its the experience of being there that does, and that is much better served by a smart physical rig than graphics. After all we see movies all the time that defy reality, seeing them on imax adds more to the experience, but you are still far from "being" there. Now if they made a virtual reality Medal of Honor game where you actually held a machine gun and had a hand gun in your holster, with even limited graphics it would give you a better feel for being there than using a joy stick.

I also think that helmets are the way to go, caves arent practical, and they dont have the possiblities that helmets do. Firstly you would have to have floor displays to mimic a ground, but most importantly, given time, helmets can be coded to interpret yourself, so if you looked at your arm during the game it would be textured for whatever character you were playing. Make the helmets smaller, less cumbersome, and wireless.

But this sword VR is going the right path, instead of having generic joysticks for all games, each game should have a specific custom module. Like machine guns, swords, etc. This way the helmet provides the full visuals of being there, giving you complete 360 degrees of freedom, even texturing yourself as part of the game, and the proper joystick gives you that physical feel.

  2. Ignoring the rest on Forbes on Linux · · Score: 0

Its nice to see open source get some real press but I just cant stand all of this "hype" surrounding linux when there are better alternatives. My choice would be FreeBSD, its simpler, more compact, and more durable in my opinion. Just look at the hassle you have to go through to add IPs from varying vlans and C-blocks through redhats multiple scripts, while in FreeBSD rc.conf takes care of everything for you.

Personally I rather spend 5 minutes writing out a perl script that will print out a list of ips, then spend 15 minutes figuring out which script if any in redhat will support what I want. Plus FreeBSD doesnt suffer from the splits of linux, where everyone and their brother has a different distro with different options and configs. While that may be a benefit, when it comes time to deployment on several hundred servers, its just a hassle.

Then again look at the installer, two CDs just to install redhat, if I dont want anything but the basics, you think they would skimp on the graphics and make it one CD. Then installing they cant even make an Alt+Tab which goes back.

Now Im not against linux, or redhat, but I just cant think of one thing that it can do that I cant do better, faster, or with less hassle in FreeBSD.

Which kind of irritates me that no one is giving this operating system a shot, I think alot of linux diehards, if they give it a shot, might even become converts. The same for all of those companies looking for linux solutions, dont look too far, just give FreeBSD a try.

  3. Not Anti-Linux on Anonymous Will Award $200,000 for Xbox Linux · · Score: 0

This doesnt seem in any way anti-linux nor an impossible feat. Its most likely MS funded, since who else would care $200,000 worth whether or not Linux can be ported to Xbox. But instead of hoping its not possible, I think its MS hoping it is, so that they can say we can do everything a PS2 could do. Not to mention, $200,000 to a single person or group, for a finished working version of Linux under Xbox is fairly cheap, if they [MS] hired Linux consultants to do that it would probably cost more.

  4. Who needs theatres on Anime Stores, Rentals and Theaters? · · Score: 1, Informative

For all of your anime needs just check out rightstuf.com. They have pretty much every anime known to man that has been released on VHS and DVD, but best of all its usually in stock and at very cheap prices. Plus they offer bundles, like for Cowboy Bebop, where you save over 50% from the Perfect Sessions price if you buy a regular bundle of the full set.
Not to mention they also have T-shirts, posters, and all of those other misc. items any true diehard cant live without. Which reminds me I gotta go there now and purchase the Cowboy Bebop, dont ever get the foreign sub 4-DVD set, the subbing is horrible.

  5. This is old on Two Towers Teaser Trailer · · Score: 0

I dont know what about the rest of you, but this preview has been showing at the end of Lord Of The Rings for a while now. I saw lord of the rings about 3 months after it came out, maybe more, and when the movie was finished, they had this preview running. Not sure if it was for everyone, but thats how it was for me in NYC.
