I think I have it figured out.

Since we are the product--eyeballs to which to show ads--what's going on is like what really happened with the supposed New Coke debacle.

It was a smokescreen to give them space between Coke with real sugar and Coke Classic with HFCS.

We, the original use base, are the real sugar version.

They want to replace us with an HFCS user base who just love it here at SlashingtonPost.

If we didn't think of it as our Slashdot, we wouldn't be here in the first place.

It's not broken, so don't "fix" it. If fucking up a winning formula
is the only way you can imagine you might leave your mark on the
world, maybe the world doesn't NEED your mark, chum.

    .

Coke replaced Coke with New Coke.

At the time I thought that was what they were aiming for.

But it turns out it was just a distraction to get regular Coke off the market for a while so they could bring it back with HFCS instead of real sugar as Coke Classic without the change being obvious to everyone who'd just had a "real" Coke the day before.

I just hope the "real" plan isn't an "HFCS version of Slashdot" down the road.

I've been here since the October Papers back in October of '98, and regularly get entrusted with 15 Mod points at a time, so I guess I'm a real user, but although I run Flashblock in Firefox so that videos only play when I want them to, I've deliberately never touched the disable advertising checkbox (because I know they need to pay the bills somehow and have considered it more than a fair trade), and don't run anything else that would block legit ads, so I don't know why they want to run me off.

I love the replies to my question, thank you all. What's amusing is the gender bias. X10 stands for "Christine", in a combined English/Dutch way.

That's not gender bias, that's playing the odds.

    Most people here are male.

And of all the languages that aren't English, Dutch is no more likely than practically any other to be one with which most here are familiar.

And for most of the people here, X10 is something for turning lamps on and off by remote control that's been around nearly 40 years.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X...

Which means it sounds like a user name a male would pick.

If you had a user name like Jane Q. Public, it might occur to some of us that you're not the same between the legs as probably 99% or more of Slashdotters.
