Almost all comments below stories are trolls. If story X is submitted 100 times by 100 different people, the one that will invoke the most responses is the one that will be chosen by the editors. Because this site is driven by responses (More ads viewed when people go to read the comments, etc, etc).

If someone submitted this story as "Microsoft toughens up Win XP with SP2" and wrote thoughtful, balanced comments to go along with it, it would be rejected in favour of the current one because it would not generate as many responses/page views/ad views.

So if you want to get a story accepted, write a flaimbait/troll comment with it. It rewarded when it's part of a story submission, just not when part of the discussion.

And besides.. it wouldn't be as much fun without the flaimbait/troll articles.

It didn't work for DVDs. It certainly won't work for music.

I'm not sure what you mean here. I buy DVDs, they're a good value for the price. I generally buy a DVD every week or two. I know I'm not alone in this. The DVD model is working great. I do not see them being hit by piracy the way the music industry is. Sure, I can find the movies, even DVD rips, online, but it's just not worth my time and effort. The DVD is cheaper then the amount of time it would take me to find and download a movie, and the case, etc that come with it make the DVD even more worth the money.

CD's on the other hand, are not worth my money. I don't perceive it to be a good value, so I do not buy them. At 5 bucks, I would see value in it, but I haven't seen a good CD for $5. If I do, I will purchase it, because I see that as worth $5. $10 is pushing it a bit, I don't think there are very many CDs worth $10 these days.

If you want to sell anything, the buyers have to perceive your product as a good value, or else they will not purchase your product. It's that simple, and the music industry has failed in giving me, and many others, the perception of good value.

The movie industry on the other hand, has been successful. They get my money, and I walk away from the transaction happy about my purchase. The Motion Picture Association of America also walks away happy, as they're making money hand over fist selling us a good valued product.

In the long run, I believe Yes, it is. Developers should remember that when creating applications for Windows and Mac. In the end, you're contributing to the well being of your one-day competitor. These companies need to grow to continue, and that means expanding into different areas... and eventually your area. Of course the same could be said of Solaris, AIX, SGI, etc, but MS and Apple seem to be wanting to dominate everything on their respective platforms.

No, it's not as if you lent a book copying machine. You are making it sound like the device has a single use. If I let you use my photocopier, and you copy something that is copyright, am I at fault? No. The book copying machine you speak of sounds like a tool that has a specific purpose. Like a computer and internet access, a photo copier has many other uses besides copying books. Funny, a guy named YouAreCorrect telling you you're wrong, eh?

Once again, blame the dumb-ass moderators. According to paragraph 1 in the link: "Cygwin/XFree86 runs on all recent consumer and business versions of Windows; as of 2002-05-12 those versions are specifically Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, and Windows XP." Why do you blame the moderators? They don't write the title or the blurb. They ahve nothing to do with the part that says "for XP". So, please.. Again, why is this the moderators fault? Or perhaps it's not and you're a troll who got mod'd up. That we can blame the moderators for.

One day I really have to read an American high school history text book. I'm interested in seeing the revising of history in action.

American involvement against the Germans was quite minimal compaired to other countries, as most of their efforts were directed at Japan (rightfully so.. Japan was the one that bombed the hell out of Pearl Harbour). It's just interesting to see people believe that the world was losing and dying against the Germans until the Americans swept in and kicked the ass of everything that moved. I'm not trying to downplay the role of the USA in the second world war here, as every little bit helped.
The people you helped most would be Australians, Chinese, and the serveral island countries that Japan seemed intent on taking over at the time.

It just amazes me to see American people not knowing the history of the largest conflict of modern times.
