yeah, because windows has never released any security updates and bug fixes becasue it's such a stable and user-friendly OS. for the record, i hope people have their sarcasm meters turned on, and i really hope that anonymous coward was joking.

FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! pardon me but this pisses me off (my karma be damned). i, for one, boot up in os 9 at least as often as i do in X, and i have no intention of letting the illustrious mr. jobs tell me i can't. i've been a loyal apple user since i was 10 years old when my mom's IIgs was the coolest shit ever, but over the past few weeks i've noticed everyone's favourite little computer company is acting more like microsoft than the evil empire itself is. one more announcement like this, and dude, i'm gettin' a dell. and once again, i apologize for my crankiness; i just found out my grandfather died today. :(

Here's what they do: just wait a few years until the current technology is left behind, then give "superdrive" to the new standard. remember, "superdrive' was originally the amazing (heh heh) floppy drive that could read both Mac and PC formatted disks.

uh, guys... aren't we missing the bigger point here? i think we should be debating the issue of copyright laws, intellectual property and p2p instead of arguing about which pat of the world has better temperatures for servers.

you're right about X being slow, but CRT iMacs aren't current anymore. join the LCD revolution, man! ;)

  6. Re:Really Bad idea. on Apple Drops Mac OS 9 · · Score: 1

functionality wise, my only gripes are popup windows and spring-loaded folders. Those were two great UI innovations in OS9 that for some reason havn't been carried over to OSX. (Why, apple, WHY?!) i wholeheartedly agree. it took me a long time to fully embrace X because of little stuff like that, especially considering that i use those two features constantly in os9. another thing that drives me up the friggin' wall: some of the re-engineered key shortcuts in the Finder. when i press apple-n or apple-m, i damn well want to make a new folder or an alias, not a new window or minimize the curent window. since idivide my time eually between 9 and X, it's a pain in my ass to remember two different sets of keystrokes for commonly-used commands (even if it's only the adition of the shift key). speaking on the larger issue: i had hoped to get a few more years out of my early-2000 iMac DV special edition. I may have to upgrade earlier than expected if i want to keep current (and fast).

  7. my 1.5 cents on Root as Primary Login: Why Not? · · Score: 1

i've been using OSX for just over a year now, and root scares the hell out of me. Call me unadventurous, but when something says "do not touch" i damn well won't touch it until i know what i'm doing. the only time i'll mess with it is if someone's holding my hand and pointing the way (ie. there's a nice step-by-step thing in MacAddict or something). and considering the number of typos i always make, i'd be one of those people who'd delete my entire drive or start global thermonuclear war from my iMac. :p

  8. Re:it's true on Sharing Increases Music Purchases? · · Score: 1

I do the same thing; I started downloading a while ago and I only buy CDs from smaller, local artists who are too obscure to be online. and the original comment about studies is absolutely true. One of the first things I learned in journalism school: study results will reflect the bias of whoever commissioned the study. RIAA sponsors a study, the results say 'omigod, music piracy is the worst thing ever." someone from the other side does it, the results are the exact opposite. Anyone can find a study to prove anything. Don't beleive any of it. And one of my first MP3s was Metallica's "I Disappear." So there.
