There's a lot to cover, but if you're serious, a great introduction to social psychology (and subjects like conformity, mass communications, propaganga, etc.) would be The Social Animal by Elliot Aronson, it's a staple for undergrad psych/soc students.

Very engaging book imo, with some good case studies and such. It doesn't cover biological determinism as much as I'd like, but does cover a broad range that would probably be of interest to you for your discussions/debates.

    Good luck.

A troll remark, but it does require a response. I've seen so many guy friends who just hand their balls over to their spouse/gf and stop being who they were just to get laid on a regular basis - then again, some of these guys wives seem to loose interest in sex after marriage or their first kid... so I'm not even sure they're getting much anyway. I'd rather be single, than being like that anyday. "programmed to be happy when surrounded by friends and to be happier when we have a mate" Really? Yet another wannabe /. sociobiologist talking out there freaking arse. Yes, I have a degreee in philosophy and sociology, and don't have time/interest in rebutting that bs. As far as true happiness goes, it's doing what makes YOU happy, not what society tells you makes you happy. I know plenty of unhappy married friends, and many happy single friends, and of course vis versa, it's a matter of doing what fits you. Narrow minded twits like you have a hard time envisioning people living differently that you do, hence anything outside you're limited understanding is 'wrong'. You'd make a great religious zealot btw. I'm a 'serial monogamist' (had about 4 intimate relationships lasting 4-5 years each). A far as trolls like you saying I'm 'abberant' because I don't just let biology dictate that I do the marriage and 2.1 kids thing, guess what - it's called having a brain and exercising free will, and I'll call you weak willed sheep for saying biology is everything, and mind is nothing. I choose not to going with the societal pressure and 'norms' because I don't have the guts to do what I want instead of becoming some brow beaten p*ssy whipped pansy.

"The Iraqi's are a sick people, and they need to be roused from their slumber. They didn't get rid of Saddam, so we will."

Hey ignoramous - read a little more history before you shoot your mouth off. They DID try to oust Saddam, and the freakin US told them to rise up and do so (Bush Sr. that is, in 1981). When they asked for help, the US turned their backs on them, after we promised to help them - and they were brutally slaughtered.

    http://www.cbc.ca/fifth/kurds/battle.html

"Bush then did nothing to help. He allowed Iraq tanks and Republican Guard units to move, to put down the rebels, IN SPITE of ceasefire conditions in which he was not allowed to move those units. In the north, he allowed Iraq to use helicopter gun ships, even though there was a ban on flights. These were not accidental decisions of the Bush administration. This was a conscious decision that it was better for Saddam Hussein to remain in power than for the Shiites in the south to succeed or for Kurds in north to succeed because they might be separatists and annoy Turkey."

So before you cast all Iraqis in the same light, trying education yourself and get f*cking informed. I am so sick of people who yammer on without a f*cking fact in their head. And yeah, I do hope Bush looses the next election - like he did the last one... oops nm.

  4. How about the artists rights - not just consumers? on Hollywood Says No to Filtering DVD Player · · Score: 2, Insightful
Personally, this issue doesn't bother me nearly as much as a lot of other recent news.

I think when a director releases a film, it's their 'work of art' (whether or not it's a good film) and should be left in tact. They choose the scenes, the camera shots, and yes maybe the gratitious sex, violence, etc. - but their intention is for you to see it the way they, and the studio choose to. And if they choose to do a "Director's Cut" later and add/edit content - that's their choice, as it was their project, they own the rights, NOT the consumers.

If you don't like 'x' content, then your freedom of choice is to NOT watch the bloody nothing, not to edit or create your own version. You don't like what's out there, then go to film school and learn to make your own movies, but leave another artist's work alone.

Go ahead, flame away, but I think everybody likes to scream and rant about 'my rights', 'me me me!" and forget others have rights and protections as well.

First time I see one of those carts, it's going to have a devasting and destructive accident. They should all be sent to the guys from Jacka*s so they can have fun crashing and destroying them ;-p

Probably because Bush is on a media blitz since he needs to keep his polls up, is worried about upcoming republican elections, and like to rattle his saber because he and daddy both have disastrous foreign policy records. Say someone actually got cold-fusion to work (not the software), they might patent it and charge people a sh*tload to use it. A non-capitalist (and perhaps more ethical) approach would be to share the information openly and let people have free, clean energy.

Given how new the .NET framework is, and since there's always a lag between release and large scale implementation - it's no wonder you'd see more Java listings, give it time it will change. I've worked with Java and VB/ASP, and as far as web development goes... I'll VB 6.0/ASP 3.0 & VB.net/ASP.NET over Java/JSP any day. I know there's a lot of anti-MS sentiment here (some of it for good reason, some just knee jerking) but they have done some amazing things with .NET, and I've only just seen the tip of it.

I feel the same way about that stupid lawsuit from the a-holes at Blacksnow againt Anarchy Online and Dark Age of Camelot. Every game I've bought from Blizzard I've enjoyed immensely, they release very reliable, stable games with a lot less bugs that most gaming companies. I especially love the name, the Patriot [sic] Act. Bush is using the so-called war on terrorism to justify trampling over civil rights and expand federal powers to a ridiculous amount. The excuse they had their hands tied pre-911 is a load of crap. Look at the recent info about the 2 terrorists they knew were in this country for more than a year, both involved in the 911 act. They had the information, but the CIA/FBI screwed up, and their answer is to give themeselves more power, it's complete bs. What sickens me the most, is the idea questioning the government is unpatriotic. If it were, we'd all be British still. 911 was terrible obviously, but so is stripping away rights, sneaking by new federal powers, and making anyone who says "wait a minute Uncle Sam" seem like a traitor - isn't much better.
