I used to think larger screens were better, until I got a 12in iBook. This thing is so light compared to my old Toshiba, that the reduced strain on my back resulted in better eyesight, for I am no longer bothered by the smalled screen.
...but no cigar! Once you get a light weight iBook and notice the battery runs for 4.5 hours, you regret every paying more than $1500 for an 8lb Windows notebook with 2 hours of battery life. Plus, all the Macs come standard with GNU Screen. There simply is no comparison.
Open drivers aren't just for 3D. Matrox cards require the closed driver just for basic DVI support. This is lame. I wouldn't be surprised if S3 were the same.
Nobody is asking to see these companies "valuable" algorithms, which are probably trivial and obvious anyway. They're asking to see the damn specs. A driver rewrite increased scanner performance 30%? Cool. Give me the specs, and I'll write one from scratch that improves performance even more. I don't need to see the anybody else's code. If someone erased all the labels on my DVD player, I can still operate the thing if someone showed me WHERE the play button is, etc... That's all we're asking for. Not the damn DVD internals, just the buttons to press to operate the damn thing.
Have you never failed to open a Microsoft Word document in Microsoft Word? Lots of people have experienced this. This is not a "minor" problem, even if it happens only once in a while. Your disagreement with the previous poster is probably based on your different characterizations of this problem-- no need to suggest the poster can't read, lest someone might be tempted to comment on the comprehensibility of that last pragraph you wrote. I've been in an office where, after a recent MS Ofice upgrade, we couldn't open certain resumes. Our solution wasn't to suggest everyone upgrade their version of MS Office. We just told them to save their resumes using RTF, and re-submit. Other companies might just ignore the resumes without bothering to contact the applicants. This is not a minor problem.
Don't be offended, but I think you're being naive. Microsoft releasing an open format does not solve the problems we've been complaining about for years.
I agree, she needs to go. But six years is a long time. I think I'd rather have a 99% republican who might even retire after the next six years, than a 100% republican. It would have been nice if Michael Huffington won after all.

Dude, all you need to do is walk two steps outside your front door and you'll probably see a homophobe. Is this why gay marriage etc is so opposed in the U.S.? The Jamaicans? Get a grip, man. Don't be so typical.
I see people get flamed all the time here and elsewhere, and I always thought it was just silly. Even worse are the ad hominem attacks. Nevertheless, I just have to say it: you are really stupid.
It is common knowlegde that there are open drivers for Matrox cards, but the common knowledge is wrong, unless you limit yourself to basic functionality. Check out the Matrox support forums. You need their closed driver for using DVI on the G450/G550 cards.
To buy something from the store with the intention of returning it is fraud.
No it isn't. If a store allows you to return a product, how in the world is this fraud? If a store doesn't like people returning products, it should take measues to prevent it. A store's business practices are not my concern. If the store goes out of business because people keep returning products, it's still not my concern. Your mentalty creates the perfect environment for corporate welfare-- we just gotta do something for those suffering businesses.
Wrong. The majority get A COPY of Windows installed on them. This is usually the OEM CD that someone bought already, which is NOT ILLEGAL, even if Microsoft says otherwise.
They still just don't get it. The main reason why Goggle became so popular so fast was because of the relevant search results and the simple web page. That scroll bar is so dumb, and so in the way.
I was thinking the same thing. I have an Xray machine at home and I like to sleep with it continuously radiating into my head. I'm fine, so that guy must be paranoid.
DJVU scans render way way WAAAAY faster than PDFs in essentially all software of which I'm aware (Xpdf, Evince, Adobe,...). The size difference is not just 5% smaller either-- more like 70-90% smaller for similar quality. For people who deal with hundreds of scanned documents on a daily basis, DJVU is a savior. You just have no need for it, so you can't understand.

Does the S3 have open drivers for the DVI interface? I'm looking to ditch Matrox.

Very Insightful.
Do you think Clippy was the result of "usability testing"?

Dude, this made my day!
You can get a new iBook G4 for less than $1000. Many university computer stores still have them in stock from last year.

I apoloize.

Dear Libertarian Idealist,
Nice try, but your reasoning is still flawed.
Nice troll!
You didn't vote for Bush the last time, did you? This shit was going on before the election.

Anyone who thinks the price disparity is due to MS kickbacks is on crack, because such a practice is totally outlawed by the antitrust decree.
Yeah, this lady I was talking to said her son was murdered, but I told her that she must be mistaken, because murder is illegal.
