I agree. I used to read the website frequently, before the forced ad, and I like it a lot. But has it changed the world? Please. Probably only 0.001% of the world's population has even heard of it. By the way, where do you find these (liberal) elitists? I only see them on television, and read about the in right-wing publications.

No they aren't. They're pissed about the current occupation in the Middle East. This is what they've always said. There is no reson to doubt this. Some people just refuse to be colonized and give away their country's natural resources. I don't think the Christian missionaries and porn smugglers are going to have a chance in the Middle East. When people know their own history and culture, which has been entrenched for thousands of years, I imagine it's hard to give it all up for a new DVD player and a job a WalMart.

Interesting. If I took Microsofts code, made some improvements, and released it under a different license, Microsoft would certainly stop me, sue me, and the Feds would probably jail me. If I took some GPL code, made improvements, and released it under another license, the copyright owner would just ask me to stop, and possibly civil action if I refused. The nerve of that guy! He's such a COMMUNIST! He asked me to stop, and that's all! Man, I'm glad Microsoft and all other copyright holders would do the humane thing and have me fined and imprisoned, instead of the much worse scenario of just asking me to stop distributing their software. I'm sick of these commies trying to take over!

GPL v2 is already anti-patent. If, under the GPLv2, you release code which implements a patented algorithm, you have to allow others to do the same, thus making your patent royalty-free. If you don't own the patent, you can't release the code anyway. The GPLv3 clarifies a lot of stuff already covered by GPLv2.

You seem to suggest that there are a substantial number of scientists who don't use math, or maybe even that most scientists don't use math. I'm intrigued. Can you give examples? I was one of those naive people who thought most scientists use mathematics to a substantial degree.

It is also true that the majority of terrorist attacks carried out worldwide are done by militant Islamists.

I disagree strongly. Most terrorist attacks are committed by the U.S. government. If your definition of terrorist includes Arabs only, then yes, you're right. But if you're definition of terrorist defines the act without regard to race, religion, or ethicity, then you need to think about it more. It's telling that Americans think a government-sponsored bomb killing innocent civilians is just (we have a good reason for being in Iraq?), while an individual killing innocent civilians with a bomb is not. Dude, more innocent Iraqis have died by U.S. bombs than the sum total deaths by Arab terrorists in the past several decades. Do you even give a shit? Tens of thousands of Iraqis were killed in the first year of the "liberating" of Iraq. Do you honestly believe all these people were guilty of any crime against the U.S., other than their thoughts?

I guess at this point I'm feeling like when you're 10 years into a so-so marriage. Sure you might like to leave and try something better, but when you step back and look at all the effort that will go into getting divorced and setting yourself up in a new marriage and then wonder if at the end of the day you'll just be trading one set of problems for a new, different set of problems with someone else.

How about this. You spent 10 years locked in a marriage where you felt oppressed because you were never free to do basic things. Your spouse comlained all the time, reminding you that you are part of a marriage, and freedom is for single people. You got a divorce, and found a new relationship where your significant other never complained when you did those simple things you've always enjoyed doing. You grew more in the new relationaship and wondered how in the world you could have been involved in such an oppressive relationship in the first place.

I've been using Linux almost exclusively since Fall 2000, but after installing Fink and loads of other free software, I realized something that surprised me-- it's not Linux that I liked using-- it's the free software: GNU Screen, Vim, TeTeX, RCS, ... Using Openbox on my Linux computer is more flexible and comfortable than OS X, for sure, but when I'm on the road, having a small light laptop with good battery life is awesome compared to the laptop I used to have. When I use Windows, I get that "this thing is so useless" feeling, but not at all with OS X-- it really is a big improvement over Windows with the Bash, Screen, and all the other free software Apple was very apt to install.
