sorry, my comment about playing playstation was totally intended as secondary line-item, but also in an effort to show I'm using it in other ways than just TV watching. I'd like to get more info on what it is sending my TV though, if you could send me a link. I use it under one of the non-HD inputs over S-video so I was assuming I was getting a 480i signal, but I could be wrong, the specs say it'll output "Variable from 256 x 224 to 1280 x 1024" and I was just assuming that my TV was asking it for 480i.

Honestly, it ALL depends on what the user is happy with. Yes HBO-HD and SHOTIME-HD all look much better when viewing movies than their corresponding DVD's (with the exception of HBO screwing up the OAR's most of the time).

I don't use PAL, I understand it has 625 lines per frame instead of the 720x480 of NTSC, so it should yield a higher resolution.

My problem is finding source material that will utilize the full capability of the TV. Luckily some of our local OTA signals are HD (from CBS-bravo to WRAL, some ABC, a little NBC or FOX-only 720p). Like I said I don't have RGB-in so computer is out for me. DishNetwork has their two or three HD offerings, and DVD's using the NTSC are using half the resolution.

But even with all that, I am very pleased with my RPTV and everyone that has seen it (under all the different types of input) think that its pricepoint was very reasonable compared to the other hardware available. Don't get me wrong, when I find the right FP setup at the right price, I'll be all over it, but I haven't found anything in my price range that I like yet.

It all depends on what the user wants to do with it. I have an HD-ready 50" RP Toshiba that's bigger than the measly 42" plasma, can be got a Sam's Club for $1800 and when properly calibrated by a technician looks like a picture frame into the outside world. Oh, and I'm pretty sure my resolution is equivalent to 1920x1080.

Granted I don't have an RGB in but I think the current gen Mitsubishi's do.

I play Playstation 2 on it regularly and it's out of this world.

If you're actually willing to buy the 3rd party software (instead of the free versions), and assuming it was from a reputable vendor, you probably wouldn't be asked to buy something everytime you used it

Asked to upgrade . . . that would remain to be seen.

Agreed . . . as a kid we'd try to drown flies in a Pepsi bottle filled with water.

We'd wait an hour or so (actually probably only about 15 minutes with the amount of patience we had back then) and then dump them out. They appeared drowned (a-ha foul creature you die!). But alas, in a few minutes they'd just jump to their feet, dry off their wings and fly away . . . bastards.

What a way to waste time.
