    There are places you can go to get CUSTOM BUILT laptops, they are just not online stores or common chains. You need a plane ticked to Taiwan, or somewhere else in SE Asia.

    A friend of mine picked up a custom laptop in Malaysia with 3GHz P4, with DVD burner, 1Gig Ram, and a slew of other features he wanted... for under $2500 Australian (that's ~$1700 US!!!)... The kicker is that this was back in February!

    So it can be done... You just need to be holidaying in the area at the time...

    No, it's not... the licence is "limited to the following UNIX Operating Systems that operate on the 16-Bit PDP-11 CPU and early versions of the 32-Bit UNIX Operating System, with specific exclusion of UNIX System III and UNIX System V and successor operating systems"

    It is the "UNIX System V" that is in question...

    The bad news is that they can.... There are many software patents in existance....

    The good news in this case is that SCO hasn't got any patent protection, and it's too late to get any now....

    If they buy, it's because they expect the price is going up sometime... And they're in the best position to know...

    Agreed... It is not useful to webify every single application...

    Some apps are just better off as applications than webapps.

    Consider whether the webapp route is really worthwhile in this case. If it is, then you may have to sacrifice interactivity (a little). If it isn't, then use a conventional application, and deploy it...

    Especially since Netscape *invented* JavaScript...

    Just because other systems now include a similar language (with another name!!!) doesn't mean that Netscape does not understand it.

    Do you need client-side interactivity (vis-a-vis an applet), or do you need a "dynamic image" (as used by most sharemarket websites, for example)?

    For serverside interactivity, a generated image (PNG,JPG,GIF) is more than suitable...

    You can even make it an imagemap, if you need image-based feedback...

    Just a thought...

    I think that the point is that *lack of evidence* is not proof of the negative.

    Just because I have no evidence that you slept with your mother, I cannot conclude that you didn't.

    However, if I have evidence that your mother was abducted immediately after giving birth to you, was killed in captivity, was cremated by her captors, and that you were in protective custody of the state for the duration of that period, then I can conclusively prove that you never slept with your mother.

    I've overcome this at home by setting up a PostScript printer-to-file, and conditioning everyone that it's the "official" print-preview, for any printer anywhere.

    So everyone "prints" the document, previews in Ghostscript, and then emails me the PS version, which I can print at work.

    Works a charm for me.

    I was originally going to complain that I could not believe a local uni would do something so silly... But the article overstates what has been achieved...

    The system currently works on voice recognition, which is capable of distinguishing people. The vision is to extend it to laughter recognition, which is not YET capable of distinguishing individuals.

    I can see it's a joke... but really, the blog says that July 03, 2003: "WELCOME, FRIENDS OF BETA-7! FINALLY got the site up! (CUE MAJESTIC HORNS AND ANGELIC CHOIR...)"

    So it's not really significant that the domain was registered almost a month before...

    Except that his friend was working on the site for almost a month before that...

    Also interesting is that the guy has no ability to read. He says that he emailed Sega twice, when in reality, he filled in online forms both times. Got automated responses which said please reply to this, and HE DIDN'T!

    Since I first saw this token (much) AFTER the launch of .NET, I thought that it was the secret codename for Windows Dot Net Archtecture.

    Then one day I stumbled across a site referring to the Windows Distributed interNet Application Architecture, i.e. ActiveX and COM, etc...

    I tried this on a PC alone, no KVM, and came to the conclusion that MS USB-PS/2 adapters are not the same as the Logitech adapters (I have a logitech usbmouse, sans adapter, and a friend has a MS mouse which comes with an adapter)...

    I can't think why this is, but apparently those tiny things have some builtin assumptions ...

    By intellectual battle, I meant not related to a physical military battle (i.e. there was no war)... I didn't meant to imply that they did it for the kudos of their scientific peers....

    And for what it's worth, I think Dubya and the Europeans have clearly shown in the last few months that there is a conflict between them... And influencing non-aligned states is exactly what they have been trying to do!
