Dell used to offer an extra battery which fits in place of the DVD drive, and can be swapped very easily. My laptop lasts for about 7 hours with the extra battery and the DVD drive is less useful when you can transfer files over wireless (and making a DVD backup on the HD is easy). I don't know if they still offer this option, but if they do it's worth getting. I find that having charged the battery over night I can use the laptop for a whole day without recharging by putting it in standby when I'm not using it.
Is it possible to record HDTV at the moment? Presumably it would be easy to set up a system with a DVD writer and hardware compression to do this. (Being in Europe I have no experience of using HDTV.)
Why can television/advertising companies prevent PVRs like TiVo from having features to skip advertising in their products when it is perfectly legal to store the data and fast forward or rewind? Why is automation of this process illegal?
"in which a work is interpreted as a statement about itself, using a literary version of the same cheap trick that Kurt Gddel used to try to frighten mathematicians back in the thirties."
This is wrong. Firstly, the proof is a mathematical theorem and is an argument based on logic. Secondly, the purpose of the theorem was not to "frighten mathematicians"; it showed that the Principia Mathematica was not a completely correct model of mathematics and that any logic system as complex as arithmetic was inconsistent or incomplete. The theorem is nothing like the absurd postmodernism that the author is criticising.
Just tried this. Video quality is surprisingly good (on iPod 4G), considering that they seem to be using VP8. When will there be an Android client?
