While everyone may joke about how the product being a microsoft one is a valid reason to call 911, the truth remains that microsoft probably isn't responsible for this mess. When MS bought out WebTV a few years ago, virtually no extra money or research was invested into it besides just keeping it alive. So Microsoft didn't just necessarily overlook this type of a problem in WebTV- Microsoft is virtually ignoring the whole WebTV division of MSN. Blame the original developers of WebTV for this mess with a helpless device.
Now we're hearing all this nonsense of how Palladium will ruin free speech, stop open source software, enable Microsoft or the government to spy on us, etc, etc,... does this remind anyone else of what people thought.Net was supposed to do?
.Net was made out to be this huge Microsoft joke that threatened the whole communication scheme of the internet! Really, now, we are seeing a open source.net being developed, and Passport? Hey, there's a open source/open standards version of that (Liberty Alliance) now as well.
If Palladium is such a big deal to the safety and choice of every computer user, why doesn't the open source software community come up with an alternative, or come up with open standards???
OSS killed the motivation? Not hardly. Think of it this way- the OSS versions of MS Office Suites keep improving to the point where they're actually competitive and worth using- but does that stop MS Office from being one of the most ripped off programs? Even with the Activation on Office XP, it's widely available (and wanted) in the warez channels.
The difference between getting expensive software for free via warez and getting OSS software for free is huge- one is getting a program that people would pay lotsa $$ for-- the other is software that is, on today's market, worthless.
He also came up with the concept of database normal forms. A good way to remember the different normal forms is to have
The Key (1NF)
The Whole Key (2NF)
Nothing but the Key (3NF),
so help you Codd
(thanks to my CS prof for this statement)
