  1. Better than Silly Putty on Homemade Silly Putty · · Score: 1

Poster putty holds its shape better, and its not as expensive. Plus, you can bill the company for the office supplies. It's not liuke it actually holds posters on to the walls very well.

  2. More credit than they deserve on Linux Most Attacked Server? · · Score: 4, Insightful

"Microsoft deserves credit for having reduced the proportion of successful on-line hacker attacks perpetrated against Windows servers."

The only way they've reduced the _proportion_ of attacks on their servers is by losing market share. The total number of attacks against Windows servers is still increasing, so it's a little premature to give them any compliments.

  3. 10% is too much on Your Brain May Have Amazing Powers · · Score: 2, Insightful

The article isn't talking about letting you use more than the 10% of you brain. The process actually limits much of your brain use giving a greater degree of focus.

People tend to think that if we only use 10% of our brain, if we could use that other 90% then we'd be much smarter or have some magnificent insight. I think that the other 90% is probably just about as smart as the 10% we use. With all that brain power working at once there would be no way to concentrate.

  5. Why isn't he in jail? on Earthlink Wins Another Spam Award: $16 million · · Score: 5, Interesting

The WSJ article said he'd used 350 stolen identities and credit cards to set up accounts. We've got the laws we need to put people in jail for credit card fraud -- so why is he at home avoiding phone calls?

  6. Re:Yes, it's the same. on European Copyrights Expire; RIAA Nervous · · Score: 1

Sure if I were Eisner I would want it extended. But if I were the American public (and I am) it looks like a raw deal. If I were Congress, I would listen to the American public, unless I was corrupt (+5, thank you) in which case I would listen to the highest bidder.

  7. Re:You gotta be kidding me. on RC Car Craze: The Spam Connection · · Score: 1

Even the 3:1 ratio is ridiculous. I've gotten 60 of those Emails, so I would have to buy 20 cars just to keep the ratio up. There's no way a million E-mails sells 300,000 cars.

  8. Re:Pure Irony. on Actual Costs for the Space Station · · Score: 1

Alzheimers jokes are always funny. Oh wait no. No one deserves it. Yes, I know /. is not known for sensitivity, but it's only because there's a troll for every subject. It's a little late in the game to hate Reagan.

  9. Re:UCE = Unsolicited *Commercial* Email on Slashback: Salon, Privacy, Pricedrops · · Score: 1

Dick Morris was on Fox News a week ago talking about a race he'd consulted with. He said they'd "rented" some lists and sent out 100,000 E-mails a few times. Dole's may not have been spam, but this one definitely was.

  10. Re:We have it, but... on Is W3C's P3P Good Privacy? · · Score: 1

The biggest IE6 issue with privacy is not the P3P requirements that only happen on 'High', but the 3rd party cookie blocking that happens on medium. It's there to stop Doubleclick, et al, but it wreaked havoc on an application my ex-employers were offering as framed content for other comany's web sites. Again, no warning from Microsoft that the rules of the game were changing.

  11. Lets all move to a floating state! on The Free State Project · · Score: 2, Interesting

I was always pretty partial to the Oceania idea, but now it has been abandoned (http://www.oceania.org/end.html) for the same reason the Free State Project isn't going to work -- Libertarians just don't have the resources. It takes money and lots of support to make it work.

Most people aren't willing to vote with their feet and move elsewhere, even when the outcome is certain. I know if I move to Las Vegas, people have a more libertarian outlook, but that's not enough reason to move.

  12. Global cooling on Mountain Moisture Melting · · Score: 1, Funny

If we just need to turn the heat down a little, a couple of nukes ought to do the trick. Carl Sagan's nuclear winter fears (which I'm pretty sure predate the global warming hysteria) were also talking about a few degrees of temperature change, but the other direction.

I'm sure once things get a little bit hotter our world leaders will start to get testy and things will work themselves out like always.

  13. Re:the best defense... on Google sued as PetsWarehouse Lawsuit Continues. · · Score: 1

Who had even heard of this company before these lawsuits? I've never seen advertisements, its a sole proprietorship, so there's no capitalization. I'd be willing to bet that he's made more money off the lawsuits than he has on the web site, (particularly now that it's down).

  14. 100 miliwatts on How Would You Start a Radio Station? · · Score: 1

It may have changed, but the FCC used to ignore anything under 100 miliwatts as long as it wasn't interfering with commercial stations. It's a good place to start, and you can always boost your signal strength later. For a while I saw billboards with messages that said "Tune your radio to (some AM freq.)". Transmitters on the billboard would have a very low power signal.

  15. Re:Profit is easy with spam on Spam Doesn't Work? · · Score: 1

Let's not exaggerate this too much.

How do you send out 10 million emails with a $20 dial-up connection? Think of it in terms of downloading these messages to your own machine and you'll see why this isn't possible. Most spammers can't deal with this kind of bulk, or if they do, they make a large investment in mail engine software and dedicated servers.

I think most spamers are suckered into it as a business opportunity, but I'm sure that more of them lose money than make it.
