  5. Intel Rules( currently) on Cheaper SMP AMD Motherboards? · · Score: 2, Insightful

    Hi..
to re-ingite the debate between Intel and AMD, I dont subscribe to the age-old and well beaten viewpoint that AMD's architecture is better. There are only two known ways to improve performance : parallelism and clock speed. AMD has chosen the former while Intel chose the latter. Who's to say which is better ?
next AMD's current Athlon MP and XP processor dont rule. They are beaten hollow by Intel, considering that Intel Xeons have 128KB more on chip cache and not to mention atleast a 700MHz clock speed advantage. Along with the PC1066 RDRAM, they rock. AMD is nowhere nearby, still stuck with DDR266.
Throughbred will have the same core as Athlon XP , but will be manufactured as 0.13nm , thereby providing slightly higher clock speeds and cooler operation. But I dont see that beating Intel, since Intel will easily be out with 3G+ procs by them. Rumours abound that Intel has a 10G+ procs in its labs...is that true ???
The only hope is for AMD is the hammer series due next year. Then we will have some interesting comparisions to make. That leaves the current Athlon Mp's at the end of the cycle. Not worth it, since u wont be able to upgrade the procs any day. and resale value sucks.
If you are buying a dual-proc box, stick to Intel Xeons with PC1066...u shud easily be able to upgrade later on. though of course, u shud have the moolah to do it.

Big noises at odds over the sound of silence
By David Lister Media and Culture Editor
    21 June 2002

'The Sound of Silence' may have prompted engaging harmonies from Simon and Garfunkel ? but a more literal appreciation of the absence of noise has prompted one of the more curious copyright disputes of modern times.

Mike Batt, the man behind the Wombles and Vanessa Mae, has put a silent 60-second track on the album of his latest classical chart-topping protégés, the Planets. This has enraged representatives of the avant-garde, experimentalist composer John Cage, who died in 1992. The silence on his group's album clearly sounds uncannily like 4'33", the silence composed by Cage in his prime.

Batt said last night: "I've received a letter on behalf of John Cage's music publishers. I was in hysterics when I read their letter.

"As my mother said when I told her, 'which part of the silence are they claiming you nicked?'. They say they are claiming copyright on a piece of mine called 'One Minute's Silence' on the Planets' album, which I credit Batt/Cage just for a laugh. But my silence is original silence, not a quotation from his silence."

IMHO, this is just a dumbass typical M$ attempt to spread FUD and cash in on it. They would be better off concentrating on improving their OS and concentrate on such matters later on.

  10. Service based support ? on What's the Business Case for Microsoft and Open Source? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Look there is no way M$ is going to either OS its s/w or adopt OS. It simply doesnt make business sense for them to do so. M$ is primarily a software company (neglect Xbox, webtv et al) unlike IBM which is a service based company. With the whole industry transitioning to services-centric focus from a product-centric focus, its time M$ ditched its product only approach and moved to a service based approach.

What M$ should do to adopt OS is bundle OS s/w with Windows. For e.g. it need not write IIS and other s/w which do not provide way more returns. Just bundle apache with Windows. Saves them a hell lot of developement effort. Then provide support for apache on Windows and mint money outta it. Similarly, to fight the increasing trend of linux being adopted, why not release a version of Linux on Windows. Stuff like that..should interest M$.

Assuming M$ does that there are two ways it could go. Ppl will start using Linux more. So either the Linux base will increase or ppl being comfortable with Linux on Win, will ditch pure linux installs, choosing to use the M4 version of Linux instead.

Either way, M$ can always provide support and service and mint money. Whether it is helpful for the OSS community or not, is something that remains to be seen.
