Ah, but what if one could operate Tivo *from* a PC? Or even better, from any internet-connected PC anywhere in the world?
Check out the The Tivo Web Project. There, you can also find info on hacking your Tivo to get a ppp or ethernet connection.
Personally, I can't imagine living without Tivo, but I hear that they (much like Major League Baseball) are conspiring to take over the world by collecting all sorts of sinister marketing information about my viewing habits. . .
Should I be afraid?
Strangely enough, the BBC is reporting that a team of Swedish scientists has discovered evidence of an unidentified monster like Scotland's legendary "Nessie" in a lake in south-eastern Norway. The "Roemsjoen monster" is similar to another Norwegian deep sea creature, affectionately known as Thelma. What is this deep sea world coming too??
I'm working on a project to reproduce the complete works of William Shakespeare using a distributed network of monkeys typing. So, if chess isn't your bag, adopt a monkey.
This is happening in NYC as well, only there are non-for-profit groups such as NYCwireless working to provide FREE access in public spaces throughout the NYC metropolitan area. If you're in NYC, check out this Community Network Node Database (also available for other major US cities.)
A cheap microcontroller and serial communication will get you started. Then it's just a matter of picking up all your LEDs, buttons, etc. from a nice cheap place, like Jameco will get you going. . .
