  1. Re:Why Sun? Sun gives light... on Sun To Sell Linux PCs · · Score: 1

Hey, there you go. Perfect! Exactly, why buy a Windows 2000 server for $3000, not including the Citrix software itself, along with the per seat licenses, when there are open source solutions? Teachers shouldn't be PC administrators I agree, but they also shouldn't be forced into huge budget cuts into their salary because of licensing fees.

I agree with you cirriculm ideas and you're right. But if some teacher is going to purchase educational software as an "Aid", then why purchase the OS-platform that it runs on. And for people who say "it would take too much training for school teachers and administrators, I'd say "So what, tax payers are paying your ass." Learn how to install a Red Hat distro by booting from the CD. Or even worse, learn how to clone a clean hard drive. Isn't Open Office a word processor with spell check also? Why wouldn't you spend $300 for Office XP? You're fogetting that most car engines nowadays don't need their carburetors rebuilt or their valves adjusted. It's all done by Computers. So the next time a kid builds his own web interface that plugs into your car and fixes your knocking, who's the f***ing monkey?

Yes, please, will schools PLEASE start purchasing these low cost Windo$e alternatives? Can you imagine the level of computer competence grade schoolers would achieve if there were 10 networked Sun machines in every class? Kids sitting in front of a MS machine, being passively marketed to by MSN, are only going to become even more frustrated by technology. Put a 1.0 ghz Sun/Duron in front of them and watch them learn. "Hey I made a Web Server!" "Look! I built a Firewall!" "Teacher, how do I read a MAN?"

I view several websites which use Java technologies for their webcams. Some java applets will work, others won't. If there's 2 different clients, MS and Sun, which should I use? Both? One? And if I can use both, can I turn off the other? I've been in PC Tech for quite some time, and this has always been an area I get frustrated. Where do I get the actual Sun client, and, can I/should I, debug? The Sun website is a maze if I don't get help, I'll be trying to install some developmental platform for .jsp or some crap. It would be great if a java pro could point me in the right direction...

I disagree. Counter-Strike is by far and away the best online multi-player game. The whole structure of the netcode gives players with 56k modems a chance to play against the people with T3's. Yes, lag spikes are there, and occasionally you'll see unfair deaths but it's a minor annoyance. If you are open minded, you'll realize that Counter-Strike/Half-Life has more man-hours put into it's netcode than any other game. There are a minimal amount of packages sent over the wire, and the downloading of maps, sounds and other customizations is painless. I'm sure you didn't know that "sv_unlag 0 automatically turns off client side shot prediciton and lag compensation (cl_lc and cl_lw respectively) so that you can lead your targets and shoot AHEAD of them, like the quake rocket." Of course, Counter-Strike is a team-based game with actual strategy so I don't expect you death-matchers to understand anything except how many frags you get.

Great idea! I think you'd need an external AGP Bus connector, because the AGP slot is mounted to the PCB. The power is supplied to the card within the AGP slot so, essentially, all you'd need is the BUS connector externally accessable (Kind of like the PCMCIA slot). Then you could swap the cards and each card has the video connector out the end like a Xircom modem card that takes up 2 slots and has ethernet/modem ports sticking out.

So what if you upgrade the 8000? I have the 8000 with the M4 32MB card and have found no problems running any type of game whatsoever. Counter Strike? Sure...silky smooth. Nascar 2002? No problem...I feel the speed. IL-2? Why not...(okay, so I turned down the fluffy clouds)? Quake III/SOF? Bank on it. Is 10 more FPS on any of these games going to make a difference? It's like all these people are saying "You can't play games on the 8000 unless you spend an extra $150.00". Name one game that won't run well on the card above. Sure, maybe when Doom III comes out in late 2004, I'll want to run it on a good rig. But think of what $150.00 will buy you in an 8x AGP card by then?
