An Arakansas law recently went into effect that allows AR residents who don't want telemarketing calls to register with the State.
Once registered, it is ILLEGAL for ANY telemarketer to call. You no longer have to tell each telemarketer never to call again and wonder, "Haven't I told these guys off before?"
I haven't even signed up, and already the number of SPAM phone calls is down.
Despite the criticism many folks have had about the interview I enjoyed the interview. Having tutored a man with similar disabilites, I came to realize the constant care and effort it takes to keep people with disablities active and well. More power to Hawkings and his nursing staff. They are an insipation.
That said, I wondering if anyone had read any Stanislaw Lem, a polish SciFi satirist. He has humorously delved into genetic modification, and manufactured intelligence.
I'd recommend Star Diaries and The Cyberiad a good staters.
It would be fun to see what my id would do if it ever got a hold of the terminal. More seriously, this kind of stuff is great. It really is amazing how people keep finding better ways for technology to help people who have physical bariers communicating.
Hmmm... I seem to remember this from Jr. High School.
Why does it seem that every time Mr. Gore does anything tech related, it rubs me wrong?
I can't help but think of Mr. Gore everytime I get SPAM, everytime I ask to be removed from a SPAM list and everytime these e-mails bounce from false addresses.
I do not believe that Mr. Gore really takes the time to understand the issues behind technology. I still cannot figure out how he got the reputation of being the techie politician. This image must have been cultivated by big business interests rather than public interest.
Here's my prediction. In 2045, the world communtity completes the Really Really Big Super-Conducting Super Collider to study the behavior of sub atomic particles in conditions similar to the Big Bang. It spans across the equator. However due to an unanticpated quantum effect, the sub atomic particles escape causing a massive chain reaction. This event was dubbed the Really Really Big Bang by subsequnce physisists who evoluted eons later in the new universe.
Back way back when... Corel purchased the ailing Wordperfect Suite. When they did this, Microsoft began looking at them as a competitor instead of a partner. As a result, Corel lost it's status as a Microsoft development partner and Microsoft stopped sharing advanced coding information with Corel. I think that Corel took this a little bit personally...
Java has not taken over the world mostly because of speed and GUI problems (Let's face it there's very few good desk top applications written in Java). But, Java has proven it's strengths. It's great at connecting different systems and simplifying various programming tasks (such as server/web based programming). So, You can't really call Java a failure. Maybe just not relevant to all applications.
As far as the HYPE goes thought, I'd give Linux a little more in the substance department any day.
I've had dish network about 1 1/2 - 2 years. I got it because it had the most bang for the buck. Overall, it's OK, but I have had several problems on and off with the service and also billing problems. Their customer service seems to feel that you're some smuck trying to get out of paying the bill.
It looks like this might work with Dish Network (not affilicated) since they claim to support DVB and an open architecture.
I don't see why anyone with a branded T-Shirt etc. should expect free advertising.
I can't understand why people actully pay for the right to advertise branded items.
Really, I just don't get it.
Of course, I also think that I should get a commission everytime someone sells my personal information for mailing lists etc.
Is it just me or what?
