From what I gather, this 'miracle' service pack only hides the icons to Microsoft middleware, and allows users to change the default handling program for various filetypes. This, of course, can already be done, so this 'feature' of the service pack really means jack - the underlying code for the middleware still remains in the operating system.
Sounds to me like some evil corporation is just brown-nosing on a certain judge before she makes some important decisions.
