  1. Inaccurate User Counts? on The Downide of Your ISP Turning to Gmail · · Score: 1

Are these active users (logged on within the last month) or total users? I represent 7 of Yahoo's 250M users but only 2 of gmail's 51M. The reason being that when I registered for all those Yahoo accounts: 1. there was no gmail 2. they only offered 5MB of storage

  2. Re:Earthlink in Seattle on Why You Don't Have a Broadband Connection · · Score: 1

Yes, but as a special reward for switching over you also get nonexistent customer service, frequent billing screw-ups, malfunctioning software, and constantly dropped out service! Hurry and switch to Earthlink today! As a bonus, their included PoET software doesn't work properly on many machines, too, and tech support can't troubleshoot it -- I was lucky in that I found properly working software craftily hidden on their site, but I'm sure there've been many people before me who weren't so lucky. As a secret bonus, they also charge you $100 if you plan to change your residence any time soon).

--Ben, happy Roadrunner user (although they also have nonexistent customer service)

  3. Re:Maybe it's time on NYC Law Aims To Ban Cell Phones In Theatres · · Score: 1

It's not about distraction -- you can still legally talk on the phone as long as you use a headset. It's about not having complete control of the car when you're holding a cell phone in one hand. Don't most states fail you on a driving test if you don't keep both hands on the wheel? And it's bad enough with automatic transmissions -- have you ever seen someone drive stick while talking on the phone? Often they have no hands on the wheel at all because they're shifting with the hand that doesn't have a cell phone in it. It's insane -- I hate being in the same car with a driver who's talking on the cell phone. It's bad enough when they're used to it, but with casual talkers the car frequently changes direction due to the fact that they turn in increments (one handed pushes instead of putting your hand inside the wheel) and veers off in different directions when they pay more attention to the hand that's holding the phone than the hand that's holding the wheel.

I wouldn't equate driving while talking on the phone with driving while listening to the radio. I think a better equation would be driving while talking on the phone with driving while eating, or driving while shaving.

  4. Founded in 2000 on Paging Eliza: Patenting IM Bots · · Score: 1

    From their website:
"ActiveBuddy was founded in March 2000"

That's funny -- I was using bots back in the mid-90s! Your groundbreaking technology must have fallen through some sort of time warp without your knowledge -- isn't that fascinating? The worst part of the release is:

" 'We invented interactive agents. Anybody using his or her own tools (to make bots) is obviously using our technology without paying us to license the server, for example. We are a startup company and we have to protect out future. That's basically why we secured this patent,' (founder) Kay said. "

I wonder if that guy managed to keep a straight face when he said that. I FURTHER wonder who taught him how to program bots -- what poor bastard's tutorial he used and now conveniently forgets. What a slimy company.

  5. Re:Can't see how... on Dreamworks Delves Into Anime · · Score: 2, Insightful

I don't want to start a flame here (although it's kinda hard to avoid when a bunch of people start talking about anime!), but it just appears that you misread a few things in the post you are replying to.

He never said that he watched the dubbed version of Metropolis. He said the translation wasn't very good. This is correct. The SUBBED translation was simply horrible. Besides the fact that it could have been much smoother, they even changed the people's NAMES for no reason! "Litegong"?! You can't even pronounce that in Japanese! Even if you don't speak Japanese, you'd still notice something wrong with the translation if you paid attention, and that alone would make it a bad translation.

But yeah, big distributors distribuing anime is good as long as the original compaines don't get screwed over in their contracts (see Princess Mononoke censorship example of what was narrowly avoided somewhere else in this thread). I really don't care how much they screw up the anime -- it introduces it to a new audience and if they care enough they can track down the better subbed versions and hear better voice acting themselves. I got into Dragon Ball Z by watching it on the Cartoon Network, now I can't stomach that stuff for even a second, but I'm happy -- now I'm a hardcore fan -- of the original Japanese version.
