    You are better off just getting swype from the developer - the beta has open for ages now, and the "stock" version that came with your device doesn't get any updates.

    A first-gen android device IS underpowered for gingerbread. Even CM6 was on the heavy side on my G1 (same hardware as your myTouch). You had to be careful what apps you installed so you didn't kill performance. That's not a satisfactory experience.

    But the shelf life of these devices has nothing to do with the actual capability of the hardware. From the manufacturer the problem is planned obsolescence. From a community project, support runs out when there are no volunteer developers left who think its worth the effort.

    How long ago did HTC last ship an update for your phone?

    It's the same from the point of view of a support engineer. But CentOS was previously unsupported, which is corporate for "yeah it might work, but you get to keep the pieces". Significant? If you care about things like vendor support from the likes of MS, I'm sure it is.

    Dunno about Hyper-V, but you perform basically the same trick when you install a Xen Dom0 kernel in Linux.

    Agree? That's not what Gabe is suggesting at all. He's saying that griefers should have to pay more than the noobs they frag, as every ragequit represents lost revenue. Players who bring noobs into the game actually make money for Valve, so should be rewarded with steeper discounts. Interesting idea. But it's about game theory (heh), not MMO socialism.

    Indeed, UPLOADING would be distribution. Of course, the distinction may be moot for torrents, depending on one's share ratio.

    I agree that seeding is meaningless, but can't you make a legal distinction between somebody with a 1:1 ratio and somebody with a 1:100? Surely these are not the same level of infringement?

    Even the pirates do not consider your contribution to be worthwhile until you reach 1:1. For all practical purposes you have not made anything available to anybody.

    Good thing we have choice huh? You just seem to have missed the obvious. The distro usually recommended for a Ubuntu refugee is Debian (Testing). Or try Arch if you really want to customize stuff, its a lot of fun but a pretty big swing from the hand-holding you might be used to.

    A temporary cache that might be partially recoverable using advanced forensics under ideal contitions is "in reality no better" then a permanent .db file that can be simply copied off the device? The RDF is strong with this one.

    That excuse doesn't fly with me. Why shouldn't I be allowed to buy a phone running 3.0 or a tablet running 2.3 if I want to?

    Apparently this is all because the Galaxy Tab came out with a "non-tablet" OS, and Google didn't approve. I say to hell with them. It was/is an awesome device anyway.

    They can write whatever they like, but that doesn't make it illegal. Nor do big scary letters give the MPAA power to waive your rights.
