As a hardcore windows developer I find this to be great news. I have never liked coding for linux, mainly becvause it is just to much work to know all the APIs, infrastructure, etc... for both platforms.

I never was a big fan of java... Thats why I am really happy with this development. I can code for both platforms with only minor ui changes.

I think the linux community will find that being able to utilize the huge amount of application developers that windows has will be a large boon... Remember lack of good applications is what kept Mac from catching on, early on... DigitalCH

Then you have never seen a real exchange installation. We have 65,000 users in 50+ locations around the world.

Just because you work with incompetents doesn't mean the product doesn't scale.

You are wrong about a simple calendaring system being enough... Once you have really used Outlook/Exchange in a business setting you realize that it beats every other client out there hands down.

Another thing you forgot is that exchange can do some far out things like host Vmail... this is huge from a business standpoint...

The answer to your question is fairly simple. Microsoft tools are the standard. So moving to them from nonstandard tools is considered "acceptable pain".

Moving away from the accepted standard is not a good enough reason for the user to deal with the pain of a switch.

  5. I can tell you what is holding SAP DB back... on What is Holding SAP-DB Back? · · Score: 1

Its partly about trust. The most important feature of all databases is their replication and clustering support. Thats it.

Businesses will only trust something that has been around a while and that they no can failover and be brought back online. Thats the reason that Oracle, Sybase, MS SQL, and DB2 are so popular. No one in the business world would think of using Mysql or something like SAP DP unless they were truly desperate.

  6. Ease of Setup and Use are the most critical... on What is Holding SAP-DB Back? · · Score: 5, Interesting

One thing that bothers the hell out of me is that no DB out there is easier to setup and use than MS SQL server...

In my job I have used literally every DB out there and none of them are easier to setup than Microsoft. It also the easiet to use from the application side. With oracle and other db's you need to know all kinds of listener and config info about where you dbase is. With MS and a few others you just need the servername and dbname and it works. Thats how things should be.

I am quite happy with the way MySQL is coming along.. they finally have a decent admin interface and the other feature they have needed for years... now if installation and usage were just a bit easier they could really compete.

You guys obviously don't do enterprise development. If you did you would understand the need.

There will always be cases where you are subscribing or offering services to other large companies. Very quickly it becomes handy to be able to set policies on what those users can do as groups. Even more important is that you don't want to do provisioning... cause provisioning costs lots of cash and it would be more efficent if the company subscribing to you services did the provisoning on their side. So what you end up with is a need to trust all the users from their domain and integrate it with your systems as well as set policy on how the trust will work.

It's hard to explain unless you have seen the problem but trust me this is a killer problem for large corporations. I've seen hundreds of millions spent on solving this issue at just two companies.

  9. Depends on the business... on Does Drawing on Experience Infringe on Other's IP? · · Score: 1

I think this is highly dependent on the business. If for instance someone designed a product and you hire away one of their engineers and he reimplements the product for you then I think the other company may have grounds for a lawsuit that you violated their IP. However, if you core business is say a process... such as accounting. An you hire a software engineer away from a company and he completely reengineers there stuff then this is if perfectly fine as long as he didn't sign a contract with that company stating explicitly that he wouldn't do that. I think it really revolves around whether that companies core way of making money is their IP. If it's not then it is just competitive advanatage that you stole from them.

Once a bunch of theaters start to buy them the price will come down and there are some pretty good benefits to doing so. One, it makes it cheaper so movie studios can do more effects and maybe even hire a few decent actors. Two, it looks sweet. I saw SW: AOTC on both formats and I could see the difference. Some of the new smart phone stuff is pretty cool: http://www.microsoft.com/mobile/phones/default.asp I also saw a demo unit recently of a normal pocketpc that was also a phone. It was really sweet. The linux stuff is just too far behind on the ppc right now. There needs to be better gui support as well as integration.
