With the funding available to these innovators, there is no reason why they cannot modify their designs as necessary. They have tremendous support and an enormous financial backing. I highly doubt they are only able to contemplate "scaling up" their current design.
Patents? This is a copyright pre-registration system. Not a patent system. Developing 2 versions for such a short period of time is a waste since cross-browser compatibility will be available shortly anyhow.
I never said anything about matching quality. IMO, ray trace is far superior for high quality renderings. I said that it was nice to see video cards finally *starting* to catch up. I also stated "early days" of POV... Anybody who has done ray tracing in code knows that you can generate some pretty bad stuff. It takes some work to get it right, and lots of practice to get good.
Wow... HaiLHaiL offers one alternative to MSProject while bashing Microsoft and his post is rated as a 5. Here's a big list I found of project management software....and I won't trash talk anybody or their products.
Excellent point. My early days with POV-RAY yielded some pretty comparable, if not better renderings. I always thought it would be cool to be able to render pov-code in realtime, but its just too cpu intensive. Its nice to see that 3D specs are finally starting to catch up with ray-trace quality.
I never post to slashdot, but I love to read along. After reading this, I had to say something. I only tested 3 or 4 of your claims on my Windows XP box, and found them all to be untrue. Many of the claims sound completely untrue based on my experience with XP. I'm not saying that problems don't exist, but you seem way over the top. Testing your copy paste claim in a dos window only takes a second.
I'm amazed that whomever rated this note neglected to verify its validity also.
The idea is interesting. Any company that made money on "free" software by placing ads would probably be able to work deals with government institutions and other public facilities. I don't believe that many businesses would come on board, especially if the ads linked to web sites which were distractions for employees. In any event, it is one possible solution to the glaring problem of not making money by giving away software. But as with XMRadio and DMX, you will find many people willing to pay to forego the ads. I would be one of them.

Lets not waste taxpayer money by forcing multiple versions of an application that will shortly become cross-browser compatible anyhow. This crowd is unbelievable. http://www.inaniloquent.com/PermaLink.aspx?guid=84 e78f4e-60e6-4e9f-9233-9457dbe196b8
>Does anyone else design an OS in two weeks? I'd say that 2 weeks worth of design is far better than suggesting the software will "evolve."
