Well one thing they could to to increase the seek time, which is one of the most important factors in drive performance, honestly, ripping a track in about 30 seconds is good enough for me, is including more than one read head, placed on opposite sides of the disc, this would effectevly cut the seek time in half, when the bit of data that it needs just passed the head, it wouldn't have to wait a whole nother revolution, just half of one.

They most likely just spray painted it you know. it's not that hard. All you have to do it cover the display and parts you want to keep clear eg around the edges of the screen and vents with masking tape, done right, this will yield the results you behold.
those guys look like they're pretty competent in modding their macs, so I'm assuming that's what they did, and used a keyboard from an older iMac/G4 that was already black. You silly, silly people.
