I think you are missing the point, as a "non-technical geek" I got this site from my husband who was laughing about it because we have been through this.
First of all its about space vs beauty vs compromise. I love my husband dearly and he has a huge data cabinet in my bedroom right now (my sister thinks I am nuts to let him have it) however he gave me a good reason for him to keep it. First off it keeps the kids out of the equiptment and things that could harm them. Secondly it keeps a lot of the "mess" out of site, so I have to deal with the IBM blue datacabinet sitting in my bedroom it is much better than hundreds of computers everywhere.
Space is also an issue, I really didn't want it in the bedroom but we have 2 kids and both of them are showing their geekiness. Both of them have their own computer but they are more interested in "Daddy's" things. Do I really want to deal with my husband coming home from work to find his stuff trashed? (As they are both smart and can get into anything.) No so the data cabinet is a great thing, it locks and they can't get into it.
However, it clutters my room and there is always a constant noise coming from it. I am not exactly the worlds best at sleeping so many a night I have been kept up by the sounds of the fans or other various computer noises (not counting my husbands pager that goes of 24/7 and the palm pilot that reminds him of everything and goes off at all hours of the night as well). My husband is a sound sleeper, if it weren't for me I am pretty sure he would never hear his pager (as he misses his alarm in the morning if I don't wake him). The point is that I can tolerate the computers but I want some place that I can walk without getting cut by computer towers and other various things. I want to be able to let the kids loose without worrying that they are going to bust something.
I am sure the poster doesn't have this problem but it does become a real problem. Whenever things are put in storage it is not his stuff put there but mine as mine are collectables and can get broken pretty easily. We are in the process of buying our first house and I have already set up plans for his own office that he can lock shut so the kiddos can't get in there.
Do I get my own room just for me? No... Is it fair? Not really but at this point I deal with his geekiness because its cute, when it cuts into my alone time with him then he better hope that UPS is working because I will drop the power *evil grin*.
*grin* Well I am proud of you *grin* not bad Russ.
