    Actually that's not quite right.

They were permitted to merge, and the AIM server-to-server (noting that the FCC requires it to be server-to-server) interoperability was not an issue for the merge, EXCEPT that they were NOT allowed to provide realtime video messaging over their newly aquired cable modem networks UNTIL they had enabled that interoperability with either open published standards OR connections with three other IM networks.

They have recently stated that they are pursuing other approaches to the interoperability aside from server-to-server because there are 'key issues' with that approach. This goes against the FCC decision (assuming they provide the video messaging) if they use anything other than server-to-server AND they enable video messaging, and there may well be real valid reasons for the issues with server-to-server, although I can't see them.

Actually thick metal is not the best way. They found that gap seperated thin sheets of metal can actually stop micro-meteorites much more easily, and much more lightly.

This occurs because when an item punches through a thin sheet of metal it actually causes the metal to flex and bend with the impact, kinda like pushing your finger through a sheet of clay, multiple layers of this actually absorb more energy than one single thick layer. (Hence the type of shielding on the apollo missions, and beyond I presume)

In your above scenario you would more likely have the metal fragment punch through your setup and create more debris, bits of matress and metal..

    SONAR!!! IN SPACE?????

Remember Sonar is SOUND waves being emitted and reflected off a target. SOUND requires a medium to travel, and space is, well a vacuum, hence the lack of ability to hear / make noise, and then famous saying, "In space, Nobody can hear you scream". Of course there is a very slight atmosphere, a few atoms per metre squared, but not enough to create a compression wave.

Supposedly there aren't going to be many problems.

TheRegister has been running a few stories on this for a while, and I believe they at one point got comments from a number of ISPs, most said no worries, AOL said they use some of their net but that they have multiple other provides. BT claims there is stacks of capacity kicking around, so hopefully nothing but a minor glitch for the majority of users, although anyone who did NOT move from the KPNQwest network is screwed.

TheReg story on the latest is here: TheReg 4:45 BST Shutdown (Oddly enough the article states 4pm BST but the headline 4:45... Weird)
and the BT comment is here: TheReg - BT on Capacity

Most DVD players can be chipped.. Both of the players I've had have been chipped (live in the UK, expensive DVDs over here so that I can play any region disks.. Yes even RCE disks)..
Very few DVD players now have menus to change region (at least in the uk) since the movie makers complained a little...

Oddly enough the 'chipping' process generally removes macrovision, isn't that a bonus ;)

But I know of Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, etc DVD players being chipped, and having macrovision removed its not just the small / cheap players..

Take a look at http://www.dvdlibrary.co.uk/bonus_kit.htm for mods for DVD players. Not sure it it does macrovision disabling, just searched on google.

In the UK I am pretty sure that this is totally legal, after the first sale principle, and that region restrictions (or other unsanctioned trade barriers) are actually illegal under EU law. I've never had a problem buying, selling or speaking to shopkeepers about it.

If you have a DVD player look at the mods, some don't even violate warranty!!!
    Of course IANAL

Arrrrgggggggh NO! (At least as I understand it :) )

Radar works in pretty much the same way as light, imagine the aircraft as if it were built out of mirrored surfaces, now use a powerful torch (this is your radar source).

As the light sweeps the aircraft it reflects in all directions from a nicely rounded shape. Thus you are able to get a response back to you. If the aircraft is designed to be 'radar invisible' then it has flat sides and very sharp corners. The flat underside reflects radar well, but only changes the upwards component of the beam so it reflects AWAY from the radar source. ANY curved edges would increae the radar footprint. Even the window joins had to be sharp.

It was not just a computer simulation that caused the flat panels and sharp edges. In fact they had to create the first (I believe) indirect control aircraft. A computer sat between you and the controls and adjusted the control surfaces to do what you want and to keep the plane steady, without that it would have been impossible to fly.

So yes looks do play a part, but a utiliterian part, not an asthetic part.
