  1. Interesting on Seeing and Tuning Social Networks · · Score: 1

All I can see software like this doing is improving the "networking" of the current lower skilled workers and allowing the incompetant managers to remain in thier positions.

A skilled manager recognises which of his staff interact with other departments well, he may try to encourage them to interact with another department or manager, he doesn't need software to tell him such things.

What if Joe in IT's best mate is Bill from marketing, as such they form a good link between the departments, but Joe doesn't interact with accounting as he thinks John lazy and stupid. A skilled manager will pick up on something like this, software and a poor manager may try and persued Joe to network with John to the detriment of the department.

I'm interested in reading this book to read the "account of how the geeks eventually lost control of their creation", this seems one of the most potent themes in the book and still extremely relevant to the itnernet at large, just look at WC3 for example, afaik thats still ran by a lot of _geeks_. Many of the /. people, I am sure, have ideas how the net could be improved and how the internet can be improved, but this book contains a warning about letting commercial and governmental groups get involved.

  3. Re:Daemon Tools - Useability on Keeping Children's Software on a Networked Server? · · Score: 1

From my experience to change CD's in Daemon tools you have to click on the tools icon, and select the image manually, and isn't there also a limit on 4 cd's at once?

The question here is useablity for a 7year old. I can't really see that this is a major issue, but it isn't the most user friendly of tasks to do, popping cds into a tray and waiting for them to auto load - easy.

  4. Re:Micropayments on Results of Another Web Publishing Experiment · · Score: 1

This is probably because the econmics don't work. 1000 payments of $1 vs 100 payments of $10, its easy to see what companies would prefer, for every transacation there are the associated costs invovled with authenticating the payment etc. This seems to work ok for charities as the banks offer discounted rates, but it really doesn't seem to work at the moment.

I heard the case for someone like Amazon to run a system for this sort of thing, though. Make quite a good one, large user base, a lot of the mechanisms are in place and there are a lot of readers there! Instead of suggested purchases there could be suggested online subscriptions etc.
