So noone is disturbed that software makers are not held responsible for the gaping holes in their sofware that are not fixed for months on end after they where first discovered?

People buy pcs just to play mame games. Or just to play divx movies. Or just to listen to mp3s. (i've considered a dedicated mp3 box for some time) For $200 and a set of speakers one could have a sound box thats cooler than the average mp3 player. (then again thats overkill and im just putting up an example, i dont know hoe good xbox's sound card is). $200 is dirt cheap for the amount of things it can possibly do.

In other news, Slashdot never post Pro-Microsoft, Anti-Linux Articles. Meh, they are advertisers, they do what they deem right, and we go ahead and block 80% of them. I havent seen a pop-up in ages and block more than 50% of the image ads. Use mozilla, use a proxy ad-killer like proxomitron (if you're on windows), be happy. None of the two ads in the adAge article showed up for me in mozilla btw.

There's already moving ads on the greek subway system (metro)for a few months now, and they seem to be based on the same technology. From the coa-cola ads i've seen until now, they dont look that good, and the flashing probably gives a headache to most people.

This is one of the reasons i like the FastTrack network (Kazza/Grokster) over the WinMx/Gnutella networks so much. Each file comes with a description that anyone can edit, and i can just look for the "bleep-less" version by searching for "*name* clean".

    it has happened again
one day i logged into my my windows machine (well it was back in win9x but you get the idea) and i found out netscape wasnt working as it should be (hidden apis and more). And guess what, the free alternative was there, comfortably provided by m$, so i used it for a few years until i found out about mozilla. My point is, when winamp "brakes", media player will be there and people will use it for the same reason they used explorer, it was free, it was there, and their old favorite program isnt working like it's supposed to. They wont even have to change any settings as wmp will have conviniently changed media files to run with wmp.

. To ensure that just about any Divx film can be played back without image dropouts, you should use at least an AMD Athlon with 800 MHz plus or an Intel Pentium III/733.

um right. i have a p2/500 and i can run all divx moviews flawlesly, so the "divx for old pcs" is kind of moot, isnt it?

It looks like a cool gadget none the less, but personally im more concerned by the direction the Divx project is going than what cool stuff i can do with it.

Geocities site of the week award winning website about the webmaster's cat might have all that. As for the animations in web pages part: Flash is hyst a better tool. Better than Java or Shockwave, beter than dhtml.

Another abuse, forms. Instead of using quick java based forms, people often create huge flash files just to input data.

I think you mean javascript, not Java, they are two different things. And most of the forms i see are just html form tags with some css decorations thrown in to make them look better.

Im sure we wont see open source flash any time soon, (or ever), but could be a step to see some great programs to open source platforms.

A program like this could be used to help find stolen computers. If you dont execute the program and type in the pasword every week or so the prog tries to dial-up and send an email with the current ip. (well that would only work with machines not setup to start with a login prompt anyway.)
