You might want to check out conkeror, it's a Firefox extension that makes mouseless browsing a lot more practical. I used it for a while after my rodent decided to die.
It might not be an official X-Com sequel, but Laser Squad Nemesis is a really good spiritual successor by the same designers, with more of a multiplayer focus.

Definitely Stunt Island. Besides flying around an island pulling off all sorts of stunts, you could direct your own movies in a quite detailed way.
For me C++ in action was a really good book for learning C++. It puts an emphasis on good design and writing robust, maintainable code.
