Sequels We'd All Like To See
Voodoo Extreme has a feature up that's a wishlist for future sequels. They run down some great game franchises that have been off the board for a little while, and wonder out loud about the possibility of new installments. Besides the usual suspects for lists like this (StarCraft, TIE Fighter, Descent, Ultima), they touch on some cult favorites that are ... less likely to show up in modern gaming. From the article: "Planescape Torment 2: The Poop -- Loved by many a forumgoer is Planescape Torment, a Dungeons & Dragons-themed RPG set in the other planes of existence. It was a dark game with evil undertones, but also lighthearted and funny at times. Just think Baldur's Gate with an M rating. The Scoop -- Odds of a sequel are equal to or greater than Elvis coming home on the mothership." Any oldies you'd like to see back on modern systems? While I really like many of the ideas listed here, the LucasArts classics Grim Fandango and Maniac Mansion are the ones I'd most like to see rehashed.
An SCIII from Toys for Bob (or whatever they would name it) is high on my list, even after all these years...
XML is like violence. If it doesn't solve the problem, use more.
Space Quest? Where the hell is space quest on that list!!
They already made a sequel to Maniac Mansion. It was called "Day of the Tentacle". Very fun game, and there was even an easter egg where you could play the original Maniac Mansion on a computer in one of the character's rooms.
My problem with sequels is that it's just way too easy to botch a good thing.
There's a ton of games I'd like to see either updated editions of or new maps/missions for but at the same time my initial reaction would be somewhere between fear and anxiety.
And as for updating older games... sometimes it's the nostalgic effect of playing it on the old systems that make it better than what the game really is.
Dedicated Cthulhu Cultist since 4523 BC.
Dungeon Keeper III: The Apology.
Dungeon Keeper was a great game with a simple premise. Dungeon Keeper II forgot that adding Mega-3D graphics and a storyline that nobody would care about doesn't make the game better.
Adding new monsters and more flexibility was needed.
I wanna explode more chickens!
I wish we could have more Dino Crisis.
Dinosaurs > Zombies.
Grim Fandango 2 Monkey Island 5 Indiana Jones Police Quest Space Quest Kings Quest The Dig 2 AVP 3 Sam and Max 2 (made by lucas arts and not tell tale... I don't like their version that much) ...
Probably get the hint that I love adventure games
There are probably a few others I would love to see, but nothing comes to mind at the moment
Enough said? Really, I could think of a few games which would be lovely to have sequels to (DX, KOTOR to name a couple) but sometimes it's better to have an original story than churning out the same thing over and over which is what seems to happen nowadays. Perhaps I'm just too cynical.
If we can hit that bull's-eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards... Checkmate.
Duke Nukem Forever anybody?
Hell, re-release those with modern graphics and upgraded online play (ala Half Life:Source) and they would sell all over again. I still play all three of those games and i cant remember a LAN party i've been to where we didnt get a game of starcraft going. Show me a gamer that doesnt have starcraft tucked away on their system somewhere.
"Sic Semper Tyrannosaurus Rex."
And not just a remake. No, the new Bard's Tale isn't enough. Neither is Dragon Wars. We'd like a real Bard's Tale IV after Bard's Tale III: Thief of Fate.
Loved the SNES version. Microsoft has bought the parent company and is planing to turn it into a multiplayer only fps unfortunately.
Libertarian Leaning Political Discussion Forum.
Xcom doesn't make the list?! Gripe! Complain! And none of that silly water stuff from the sequel. Give me aliens!

There needs to be a sequel to the PS2 Klonoa games. It would really fit in well with the Wii.
I liked Duke Nukem, any chance of a follow-up?
Only three things are certain; death, taxes, and apocryphal quotations - Ben Franklin.
Skies of Arcadia (and Legends) is one of the best RPGs I've ever played, as well as one of the best games. While it had its faults (blocky graphics, even on the 'Cube, bad voice acting, high encounter rate), it was a very fun RPG with a pretty good story that focused mainly on pirates. One of the best things, though, was the Airship battles.
I'd love to see a sequel to this game; however, it should be set in the same world but involve different characters (referencing the past characters or having them show up once or twice is alright). It might also be a good basis for an MMO.
... because there's nothing like a good sequel to force the game industry to be more creative.
Fallout was unquestionably the best PC game ever made.
While they were talking about Descent ('both' of them?? I seem to remember at least 3 (unless they meant 2 sequels?)), I couldn't help thinking about (Descent) Freespace and Freespace 2. I wouldn't mind having a Freespace 3, the first two were awesome.

Slashdot Burying Stories About Slashdot Media Owned
Pleeeease don't make a Planescape Torment sequel. Sure, make another game set in the Planescape multiverse. But a sequel to Torment can only be a rape of a fine game's memory. The game had a fine ending, a great ending. Don't ruin it by tacking something on.
The closest thing to seducing real girls for all slashdot readers.
I've never heard of the original, but Planescape Torment 2: The Poop sounds like a winner to me.
What do you mean they cut the power? How can they cut the power, man? They're animals!
What?
Why not create something original rather than beating a dead horse? As cool as sequels may sound, most tend to spoil the experience of the original game.
"I wanna explode more chickens!"
Alright! Alright! Let's leave the kinky stuff at home.
Anyone else remember that game? man Master of Orion got 3 sequels. It deserves at least one.
I'm sure we can all list games that we love that either don't have sequels yet (Rez would top my list), or the ones where there are sequels, but they break the purity of the original (Super Monkey Ball).
What I'd be interested is in taking games that were almost brilliant, but stuffed up by silly flaws that were usually the limitations of the original platform. Something like G-Police with a useable draw distance, more Dino Crisis but with a camera that didn't make me want to brutally beat the developers around the head with a rolling pin, or Midtown Madness with traffic in multiplayer and a car that handles better.
On the other hand, I would love a third Syndicate...
"I Know You Are But What Am I?"
I loved the Wing Commander series and was very disappointed when they decided to go lite on the movie parts with the last game. The world needs more Kilrathi.
Last Express 2: A sequel to the Win 95/98 game made by smoking car productions. First game was set on orient express just before the assaination of Archduke Ferdinand. Great story and gameplay. Duke Nukem anyone???
To Hell with the Queen of England!
There's one I'd like to see redone. Loved building up a special forces team of heros equiped with the best magical items I could buy or build and using them to help me conquer the world.
How about a version of Tyrian that'll work on a modern machine? Such a simple game, but so well-made...
There was a version, Tyrian 2000, that'd work on a Win9x box, but not on 2k/XP/EvilVista.
Am I the only one that remembers this little classic? Am I the only one who yearns to play with Zica Lasers and Banana Bombs!?!?
"The amount of intelligence on this planet is a constant. The population is growing." -Cole's Axiom
Duke Nukem Forever II.

...would be Rock 'N Roll Racin' - "OUCH! WOAAAAAH! TARQUIN IS IN ANOTHER TIME ZONE!!" and E.V.O. which if they did it right could be effin sweet!
There's no place like ALT+HOME
And I don't mean "Privateer 2: The Random Game We Grafted Onto The Franchise."
I mean a real, honest-to-God Wing Commander Privateer sequel.
How about a Master of Orion sequel (okay, 2 was fun, but most of us know about the fiasco that was 3) that doesn't suck?
Failing that...Colonization 2 and Master of Magic 2. Please. Purty please.
No question about it:
Speedball 3 !!!
And with multiplayer this time
Also... I remember playing a game 'The Creed' in the late nineties. You had a top down/perspective view of a character ('Syndicate'-style) in a futuristic urban setting. I really liked that game but haven't been able to find anything about it since...
That's true, the sequel definitely should not revolve around the main character from Torment. But then that begs the question, how do you adopt the immortal mechanic without making it seems a trite replay?
Fanatically anti-fanatical
How about a prequel to Pacman?
Pacman Begins
Am I the only one who has love for Privateer?
~ Normality is merely the achievement of the mediocre...
. . . But wasn't it just a few weeks to about 3 years ago when EVERYONE was entirely pissed off that all the game developers were only making sequels? Why this sudden change of heart, "Wait, now we need MORE sequels!!!!11"?
disclaimer: I've been known to store numbers in my ass for which to dig out when quantities are required.
You just know it'd be from the prequel trilogy and let's face it that's a recipe for tripe no matter which way you spin it. Even if it wasn't a cheap cash-in on the licence it'd still be based on a set of films and vehicles which hold no interest for me whatsoever. That's one game series that's best left buried.
Spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, and stupid comments are intentional.
After all, in Spaceballs, we WERE promised "Spaceballs 2 - The Search for More Money".
How many games out there gave us such great lines as:
Betrayal at Krondor had an incredibly rich and complex storyline, due in large part to the creators keeping true to the source material - the books of Raymond E. Feist. (It was apparently a widely-held myth that Feist contributed directly to the game). Add a full orchestral soundtrack, amazingly lifelike characters (for its day) and a large element of exploratory freedom, and the result was a mature and intelligent game that I played through dozens of times, and still think about from time to time.
And sequels did come out. We had Betrayal in Antara, poorly received by fans who wanted to travel back to Midkemia and be greeted with a mature plotline and instead were thrust into a cartoony adventure game. We had Return to Krondor, which took away a tried and true interface, as well as a large amount of gameplay freedom. Both "sequels" failed to capture the spirit of adventure that captivated so many of us in the original title.
I wanna' go back to Midkemia.
I'd have to agree that *most* of the time, digging up old games for sequels is a bad idea but there are just some games I can't get enough of. I would definitely play a sequel to the original "Pirates Gold", especially if had some immersive 3D elements to it.

Pong 2
Wouldn't mind seeing a new Alex Kidd game for one of the handheld systems. Alex Kidd in Miracle World was far better than anything Sonic related.
Speedball Arena has been cancelled but Speedball 2100 does exist.
See http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitmap_Brothers for more infos.
-- Rastignac was here.
I bet there are lots more that really liked this game also. It was my kids favorite also back from the days of Win 3.1 and one of these days I will find my old copies and put it on my current PCs.
Given the recently released proof of concept Lucas arts visuals we got a little while back, I'd love to see any sort of "guy with a lightsaber (why isn't that in firefox's spell checker) + force powers in the E.U." game. (as far as I'm concerned Jedi Academy was Jedi Knight 2.5 except without an interesting main character, I don't think I ever finished it.)
Lucas Arts, please pull yourself out of the gutter and release something worth playing. I don't want to play through a movie.
What, are these guys new to gaming?
How about Syndicate, or Magic Carpet, or Dungeon Keeper, or Theme hospital?
How about xcom? (a real sequel, thanks.)
How about Alternate Reality the Wilderness, or the Arena, or the Palace?
// "Can't clowns and pirates just -try- to get along?"
Wizardy.
1.Sentinel Worlds: Future Magic (great little game, any game with a similar style and gameplay would be great IMO). Unlikely that there would ever be a direct sequal but a game with the same gameplay style (but done with full modern 3D graphics) could certainly be done. No clue who actually owns the rights to this.
:)
2.Transport Tycoon 2. Picture something like Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 where you can actually get a drivers (or passengers) eye view from any vehicle on your network.
If they do it, they gotta keep the candy level, that was fun
I dont see this happening anytime soon given where Chris Sawyer is. And where Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 is (dead with no sign of any future relases at all).
3.Space Quest . Basicly a game that takes all the good gameplay stuff from Space Quest 1 and 2 (including the fact that for 99% of the game every action you took was either a correct action to take or ended your game, there were no places where you could take a particular action, get further in the game and find that the earlier action was not the right one and that you couldnt go back and redo it) and makes it 3D.
Probobly unlikely to happen, the days of "type what you want to do" adventure games are long gone.
4.C&C Renegade. My favorite FPS. Given that EA owns the rights and is doing nothing with them, its unlikely any official renegade related items will be appearing anytime soon. But Red Alert: A Path Beyond from http://www.apathbeyond.com/ its a pretty good substitute for Renegade 2.
and 5.Ghostbusters. Not strictly a sequal per se but I would LOVE to see a ghostbusters game done on a modern 3D engine (using things like pixel and vertex shaders to make the ghosts look cool). Would have to have all the things from the movies though (like the ecto-1 as a cadilac ambulence and like the classic Ray Parker Jr theme song). Probobly wont happen given that Sony (who own ghostbusters) seem to be doing nothing with the IP.
I also aggree with several in that article like Diablo III (picture a Diablo game done in Oblivion style first person, now THAT would KICK ASS)
The Guardian Legend 2. The original on NES was an excellent mix of shoot 'em ups and Zelda-like exploring, and I can still play it to this day. I'd love to see an updated version.
Commander Keen! Thief!
All in all, this is a good list. Hits some of my favorites like Descent and Fallout.
No one has brought it up, but my favorite game on that list is probably Giants: Citizen Kabuto. The game play was exelent, each storyline having a very original play style (that counts ALOT to me), the commedy from the natives as well as other friendlys and baddies also made everything always worth checkign out.
If a sequal to Giants came out I would be a very happy camper.
Do Or Do Not, There Is No Spoon, There Is Only Zuul. Everything in the above post is probably opinion.
I've actually been doing just that, working on a module for Neverwinter Nights 2. It's tremendous fun, frustration, and can easily suck up huge volumes of time. On the plus side, you can add quirky humor, characters that interact the way you want, and plot twists that would be avoided in a mass-market game.
There's other game creation resources out there, in addition to modding the big name games (e.g. Unreal Tournament, HalfLife, etc.). Give it a try!
"Planescape Torment 2: The Poop"
I would buy a game with that subtitle sight unseen.

Spandex Justice
I would welcome another sequel to Elite/Frontier series, but no chance, i guess.
For those who want to play Frontier: First Encounters on modern pc: jjFFE download page
As Fallout and X-Com have already been mentioned, I'd next have to go with Autoduel, based on the Steve Jackson Games' Car Wars.
Yes, it was a little cheesy top-down type game, but before the MechWarrior series was Crescent Hawk's Revenge
You could do Car Wars / Autoduel as an open-ended environment, where you could elect to participate in the autoduel circuit, a courier running jobs, looks for wrecks to scrounge, a go criminal and create wrecks to scrounge, or go vigilante and wait for people to try to create wrecks and shoot them. With today's improved computers, you might be able to make it massively multiplayer, and have caravans and whole posses of criminals lying in wait to ambush people.
Build it, and they will come^Hplain.
Seriously

You know, one that doesn't suck so goddam much.
Ahhh, I can see it now. The greatest ASCII game with ANSI screen controls! Our Rogue-ish hero/heroine returns to the tunnels of Yendor to return the Amulet that was stolen after the rightful owners filed multiple lawsuits in multiple countries and TV newreporters actually discovered the real owner *IS* the Dragon on level 29
All Monsters will run away, you cannot buy anything from any stores and you will likely die of hunger on level 15
TDz.
System Shock 3. Jagged Alliance 3. A real Deus Ex sequel (Ion Storm just had to be kidding with that last one).
Might as well finish the series given that they've spent more than $20 million to make the first two.
I would love to see a sequel to Jet Set Radio Future on a next-gen console. I really love JSRF and its earlier Jet Grind Radio sibling...good music, cool graphic style, and just a lot of fun. Apparently, I'm somewhat alone in this.
Also, how about a new Donkey Kong game? I guess we're not getting a good one, since Rare got absorbed, but I can dream can't I?
They are not being made simply because it's pretty much impossible to recreate so good games..I mean seriously, is there anyone out there that thinks today's Blizzard could create something that's worth the StarCraft name? No way..
Infinite time means everything that can happen, will. You being you is absolutely incidental. You do not exist.
I'm gonna get flak for this, but I wouldn't mind another carmageddon sequel. Sure, once you look at the premise of the game, there really isn't anything to it. Competitor cars wander off, and al you basically do is run over people to keep your timer up, and casually hit checkpoints.
I still would like to see one with a modern graphics engine(maybe base it off of GTA?), and make the missions OPTIONAL. The missions were overdone in Carmageddon TDR, and frankly, weren't that fun. Carmageddon 2's missions were alright, and it had much more fluid gameplay. TDR couldn't even do 5x combos(the game didn't register it fast enough).
It would make a great stress reliever, and with updated graphics and more resources, I bet the game would be a blast.
What really deserves another go is Jet Force Gemini (Rare-developed 3rd person shooter for N64). The game was insanely well designed, with a soundtrack that rivals some of the best ever. Sadly no-one played it and it dropped to $20 within a couple of months of release. And even then no-one played it!
Anyone who has played it would agree that it was an amazing title, just very poorly marketed. I would love to see a good developer (Rare? maybe...) take a stab at a sequel. And they should bring back the same guy to do the music.
I like basketball!!1!
How about a sequal/remake of Below the Root?
Maybe a true sequel (read, not FPS) for the Castle Wolfenstein's? Good stealth game here.
For that matter, there's a slew of older 8/16 bit games from the 80's & early 90's that are dying for a facelift. Might give us a break from yet another FPS,RTS,RPG.
#SickNotWeak
The ultimate sequel that myself and all of my friends want is a version of Mario Kart with improved graphics, levels, and etc.
:D
One based on the n64 version, as we've all roundly agreed that Double Dash sucks.
Now if we could have it on PC, with AA, Ansio, and at 1280x1024, with 8 person internet play, well.... that'd be even better!
rhY
I hold very few opinions. I hold information based on observation and fact. If you wish to disagree, please use facts.
There WAS the now-defunct Planescape: Vengeance, a fine example of the modding community coming to the rescue (see http://addoncz.jinak.cz/web/?page=inthum_e and http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/10/07/ 1351216). I've been playing with IE modding myself, and an abundance of tools makes it not TOO difficult - perhaps if enough people got together a sequel wouldn't be so crazy?
Wizards and Warriors
A top-view Gauntlet
A real sequel to Actraiser

Where have all the space games gone?
All I want is a cockpit-view starfighter type thing where I can attack huge capital ships in an online multiplayer setting. It doesn't even have to be a Massive one, just me and a few friends with headsets doing strafing runs. That would be great fun.
It seems like, apart from the odd star wars franchise game, the whole 'starfighter' thing has become passé in games... even though we finally have online consoles that are perfect for it... Colony Wars had great art direction and an interesting, BSG-like (branching) plotline... loved it. Good ol' Psygnosis.
If Jesus wants me it knows where to find me.
Yes there already was a sequel, Crusader: No regret, but a continuation of the story would be nice. The graphics still look great for a 10 year old game.
Another Master of Orion game would be fun too.
Another privateer closer to the original would be fun.
Bring back more origin games!
Bring back the old version of slashdot.
There are some legal ducks to be put in a row first. The UQM team hasn't decided what license the actual game *content* is released under, which would affect anyone attempting legitimate Ur-Quan Masters sequel.
A Creative Commons license that permits derivative works would probably do well enough. The problem then becomes determining what the definitive canon/timeline for the UQM universe is. Certainly anything that involves the authors of the original game will be "canon," but since the content would permit derivative work, I'd be interested to know what else emerges.
How about a sequal/remake of Below the Root?
Oooo ooo oo. I've wanted that too. It could be really awesome if done right. There is a level of UT2004 that reminds me of Below the Root and what a remake might be like. Just make sure its generally non-violent like the first one. It could set a good example of how games can be non-violent, but still a lot of fun.
Leisure Suite Larry? It's been two over two years!
No sig for you. YOU GET NO SIG!
I guessing it would be an exclusive sequel for the Wii?
Just because you can, does not mean you should.
Man, I loved Homeworld & HW:Cataclysm. HW:2 had issues, but I still really, really liked it. Great stories, intuitive & innovative interface, fantastic graphics. Wish there would be a Homeworld 3 to move the story along.
Activision holds the license to one of the greatest franchises of all time: Zork. Back when Zork Grand Inquisitor came out (1996?), they had planned it to be the first in a trilogy (much to the excitement of fans). Since then, they've done nothing. You can't even find any results for the work "zork" on their site anymore (they used to have a nice interactive site to promote ZGI). They're just sitting on the license and doing nothing with it.
Bastards.
Now that the long-awaited movie adaptation of the game finally seems to be moving forward, wouldn't it be great if they made a sequel? Or for that matter, just adapting the original game for the XBox 360 and/or PS3?
- A proper update to Elite and/or Frontier
- A better sequel to 1998's Battlezone. Heck, just update the graphics and let it run on a modern PC and I'd be happy
- Baldur's Gate III, Icewind Dale III
- Another Max Payne installment
- An updated Alpha Centauri: Alien Crossfire that will run stably on a modern PC
Oh, yeah, and I want a pony too....Ahhh, so many fine memories. Crush Crumble and Chomp let you - the gamer - become a movie monster like Godzilla, run around a city destroying stuff, and eat people to sate hunger. As a kid, I loved that game. Funny story, back in 1981 or so I was caught playing CCC on a school Apple II. The teacher, and then the principal, were mortified by the premise of the game. They contacted my parents and demanded that I never bring it back to school again.
I wonder how they would feel about Gears of War today?
Undying was a brilliant, brilliant game, and I would LOVE to see a sequel. It created an atmosphere of Lovecraft-style terror better than any game has ever done.
Plus, the ending of the game set it up specifically to have a sequel.
I'm surprised that no one has spoken of Chrono Trigger.
Chrono Cross is NOT a sequel. When I first played that game, I went totally into WTF mode. I was convinced that it was NOT the Chrono Trigger 2 that us fans were hoping for. Many of my friends and I would appreciate a Chrono Trigger sequel where it stars a majority of the main cast with Magus being a must show. They did it with Kingdom Hearts 2, they just made the main cast a few years older.
If we could see a next-gen Chrono Trigger in the same time traveling, future altering, world saving with fifteen different endings, RPG sequel (*takes a breath*) I for one would be quite pleased.
If i wanted to hear bullshit, i'd go to church.

Metal Arms: Glitch in the System by Swinging Ape Studios, brilliant/hilarious dialog, and a surprisingly good game to boot. The ending left you begging for a sequel, but there will probably never be one. But as for sequels that "might" actually get made : Starcraft 2 baby.
Using GNU/Linux -- Windows-free zone!
I don't have starcraft, or even warcraft 2 any more (and yes it works fine with windows IPX last I checked, games are the only thing keeping IPX alive in this age) because Total Annihilation is the best. RTS. game. ever. And one of the really beautiful things about it is that it really takes full advantage of the hardware. We used to play with 250 units per player and the game would struggle on a P2-266 (which is what I had) and wouldn't really hit its stride until you got about 400MHz. Today, with multiple-GHz systems, you can play with a thousand units per person (a configurable value in the ini file) and have the game still be smooth at all times.
TotalA is cheap and excellent and it runs flawlessly on modern machines and on Windows XP. Cedega says the compatibility is four out of five stars as well, so it may be accessible to Linux users. It doesn't require any 3D support, so it might even work okay in virtualization if the video speed is good enough...

But what's most interesting about Planescape: Torment, and what most deserves our attention as designers, is its setting, its characters and its plot. The phrase "fantasy role-playing game," of course, immediately conjures up images of a group of Tolkienesque characters marching through the forest in search of dragons. Planescape is blessedly free of these stereotypes - I've played for several hours now and there's not an elf or dwarf in sight, nor, for that matter, a forest. The designers of the Planescape universe have at long last abandoned Northern European mythology and devised something perhaps richer, definitely darker, and altogether fresher. If Baldur's Gate is a lager, Planescape is a homemade stout.
The story centers around a nameless, immortal character who is searching for his forgotten past. It uses the hackneyed "amnesia" device to explain why he doesn't seem to know anything about the world he lives in, but I have to say that it's handled at least as well in Planescape: Torment as in any book or game I've seen it in. Our hero is seeking the information that will explain, and then end, his immortality and allow him at last to die permanently. At least that's what I think he's looking for; motives and morals in Planescape are nothing if not ambiguous.
9 was just a dream, a proper ending to the series is well deserved. I always thought a quest to re-unite Sosaria would make a great bookend for the series. afterall the stranger split sosaria into 4 worlds, he should bring it back together now that he's the avatar!
heh jk
I seriously will celebrate the day they announce Starcraft 2. I somehow doubt that it will top Starcraft, being that alot of the designers of that game left blizzard. But I really got into the story and I would like to see a continuation of it.

It's VGA and yet it's still the most playable fantasty strategy game I've ever run across. In fact all they'd have to do is update the GUI and I'd buy it with the same game engine.

I was such a hardcore Descent 1/2/3 player when I was younger, I loved those games. I still play Descent3 from time to time. It's the only game I travelled thousands of miles to attend LAN's for, and the only game I ever won prizes for at Lan parties. There was a Descent mod in the works using the Doom3 engine, I'm not sure how it turned out though. Between a Descent and a Starcraft sequel, I'd be happy for years

I would love to see a AVP III, Blood III, Instead of a Descent IV I would rather see a Freespace III-IV, I really loced the first two but the second one had the best of everything. Let's continue with the list: Diablo III I played the first two of these also and they were a lot of fun, hope blizzard makes another one. Half-Life III - Half-Life II wasn't that fun for me, though it had nice eye candy and okay storyline, I liked the episode 1 better. Another Interstate game would be nice, never played the first one but I like the idea behind it. I wish the people at rockstar would do that to there cars. NOLF III - I did't really like NOLF II, NOLF I was a great and funny game, even though the second game didn't live up to the hipe I would like to see another one. Ultima series I never played all of them, only Ultima IX: Ascension which I got confused in the end and started to fly around looking for the special cave, but never found it and gave up. I would like to see Ultima X non-multiplayer. Unreal III would be really fun and cool, though Unreal II wasn't amazing at all, I loved the first one so hopefully the it will keep living. Ah! Wing Commander series, I love it, I thought they made a Wing Commander V with Prophecy but I guess I'm wrong, I thought they would be moving onto VI. Well whichever way you look at what happened to V as a farce, I would like to see the series continue. What I don't understand about Duke Nukem Forever is why there wasting so much time on releasing it, just finish it up already, the game is so old now, no one really cares how cool the storyline is or the graphics are, they could of made 3 other Duke Nukem Forever Sequels the time its taken to just make one and release it. Well that my take on it..
UT99 - WARBYRD - Clans are for posers.
Thoughts on each of the sequels they're asking for, as they appear in the list:
AVP3: Yes please (ish). While I'd like to see this, what I'd really like to see is a pure Aliens game, with no silly Predator attached. I can't believe nobody's done this on the Doom 3 engine, frankly. Fortunately, the Sega news here does sound very promising.
Anachronox 2: Eh... Anachronox was ok-ish, but frankly, its only real distinguisihng factor was that it was the kind of game you normally saw on the consoles from Japanese developers, but on the PC and from a US developer. A sequel or remake now would just get lost in the crowd, whatever platform it was on, unless they had the kind of budget to compete with the likes of Square-Enix.
Baldur's Gate 3: YES. Definitely. NWN2 came close in places to being a spiritual successor, but still fell short. The Aurora engine just makes every area look too copy-and-paste created. Bioware should throw out the DM client and the toolkit and develop a proper, dedicated sequel to BG2. I often felt that the Throne of Bhaal expansion felt very rushed and compacted. I wouldn't mind seein a BG3 that continued the plot from the end of SoA and fleshed it out properly.
Blood 3: meh, you can keep it as far as I'm concerned. Never liked the first two much.
Dark Age of Camelot 2: Because medieval/fantasy themed MMORPGs are in such short supply these days? Yeah, right.
Descent 3: Yeah, this would be decent. I don't see why it needs to be so unlikely, as well. Back in the old days, a big issue for this genre was that very few people had the control hardware needed to play the game properly. However, I re-played Descent 2 again recently using a dualshock 2 connected to the PC and it was just fine. A console-based sequel would work great.
Diablo 3: No thanks. The genre's been done to death already. I suspect this one will happen, though.
Duke Nukem Forever: It's 99% likely that even if this does ever shuffle out the doors, it's going to be hideous. There's a 1% chance that it will rock and that every cynic who's made fun of the game over the last... oooh... decade and a bit (?) will end up looking stupid. I'd really like it to succeed, as I much preferred DN3D to the original Quake. Sadly, I'm not holding my breath.
Fallout 3: Would be nice, but I'd like to see a slightly slicker combat system than the old games had if they're going to resurrect this. Don't get me wrong, they were good games, but they've dated quite badly next to titles like Baldur's Gate 2.
Giants: Citizen Kabuto 2: No comment. Never played the first one. Didn't look my kind of thing.
Half-Life 3: Don't get me wrong, I loved the first game, but HL2 left me fairly cold and the episodic stuff just makes my skin crawl. If Valve abandoned Steam, got some proper writers in to do the plot and actually gave Gordon some dialogue, I would be interested.
Interstate: No comment, never played the original.
No One Lives Forever 3: Unless you're prepared to fix the hideous restricted-saving system that ruined the first title, I'm not even prepared to listen here. I don't really see what NOLF has to set it apart from other series. Far Cry has done it all much better.
Planescape Torment 2: Yeah, this would be nice. It'd probably need to be done with an entirely fresh plot and cast, though, given where the first game ended up.
Serious Sam 2: Meh, the second game isn't that old yet. I loved the first game and "The Second Encounter", but SS2 left me cold. I'm not sure how eager I'd be to start another game in the series now.
Shadow Warrior 2: No comment, never played the original.
SHOGO 2: No thanks. Really, really didn't like the original.
Starcraft 2: Ugh... probably the most overhyped game of all time. I never saw the appeal in this game, given there seemed to be a lot of better RTS offerings around at the time (eg. Total Annihilation). Warcraft 3 finally drew me into the Blizzard camp, largely thanks to its Heroes system, but I've never been
Anyone remember murder death kill or MDK. Now there's some demented acid trip gameplay which should be revived. Right up to the little helper dog and the crazed professor. Graphics today should able to make it playable without getting sick to your stomach. Gimme some more parachutin' helmet sniper funhouse style action
Skies of Arcadia is a wonderful game. Seriously. I bought the GC version even after I owned the DC version just to show support for the game. A sequel may be ill advised though.
After looking at Sega's recent track record of whoring Sonic out for crappy game after crappy game and other mediocre sequels like Phantasy Star Universe and Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz, I just don't think that today's Sega is capable of producing a great game let alone one that is worthy of the SoA name. Hell, judging from Sonic Genesis on the GBA and the Sega Ages line for the PS2 I'd even be afriad of a remake.
On that note, NiGHTS is one of my favorite game; well deserving of a (good) sequel. I am certainly not hoping for Sega to annouonce that they are working on it though.
One splendedly unique and unfortunately forgotten game that I would love to see a sequel to is Giants: Citizen Kabuto. This game had more variety and fun game play then any other game I have ever played. 3 completely different types of characters to play, RTS like base building, FPS combat, flying around with jetpacks, turboing around as reaper, driving a jetski on some of the best water of the time, and let us not forget eating Smarties and rampaging as a giant monster. With some updated graphics and network play, this game could truly be great once again.
Raven
Nevermore.
That's really all I have to say. Panzer Dragoon Saga is one of the most breathtaking gaming experiences ever. I'm one of the few people fortunate enough to have played it and I'd love to see a sequel or even a next gen remake of the original. That game pushed the Sega Saturn to it's limits. Everything about the game was beautiful, the voice acting and music incredible, and the battle system was truely innovative. They really did everything right with that one.
Wise men say, "Forgiveness is divine, but never pay full price for late pizza."
The problem with sequels these days is that studios tend to rush them out unfinished. They want to score the bucks, but they tend to write half-assed plots.
Having said that, I'd love to see the following:
Wizardry 9, a sequel to the orignal concept without any futuristic crap in it.
Fallout 3, 'nough said.
Ultima 10, with single player party of 4 setup. (Ultima III is still the best of the series!)
Baldur's Gate 3, Icewind Dale 3: As others have stated NWN2 was damn good, but those seemed better.
Sacred 2, which is in the works. Just, fix the bugs this time, guys!. The game rocked, when it worked.
I'm trying to remember a game from the mid to late 70s. It was a space battle game, with graphics similar to Asteroids, and there was a rocket looking ship and a saucer type thing that usually wasted you really quickly.
You're using her as bait, Master!
I see lots of PC games here (and I agree with most - Grim Fandango 2 would be awesome, but I'd even buy the first version if it came out as a DS game or something), and lots of newer console games (Psychonauts!), but very few older games. There were tons of games on the NES/GameBoy/SNES which should get sequels. Kid Icarus, for example... I also think the DS needs a Metroid side scroller along the lines of the two Castlevania games.
Maybe Nintendo is using the VC to gauge interest in old franchises? If so, Urban Champion probably ain't getting a sequel anytime soon :-)
OK, I have a huge problem with this reference:
(FTA)
"Duke's wisecracks made him almost as popular as Bruce Campbell in "Evil Dead." Bruce isn't so popular today, but for whatever reason people haven't forgotten about Duke yet."
I am a big fan of Bruce Campbell, as I am sure many fellow slashdotters are. Since 1996, when the last DK game was release, Bruce has been in (according to IMDB) no fewer than 49 movies, tv shows, or video games. Not so popular? In the 10 years after "Evil Dead" (1981 - 1991) he was only seen 14 times. I think that suggests that his popularity has grown quite a bit since then. Even if you are suggesting his popularity peaked at "Army of Darkness" (1992), you would be mistaken.
Ask your average Joe about Duke Nukem you MIGHT get a "Oh yeah, I remember that. Wants that just rip on Doom?" Your luck to find a copy in a bargain bin today. I would think more people would know who Bruce Campbell. Hell, he's been in 9 video games. That is three times as many as Duke Nukem has.
Don't fuck with the Bruce!

That was one of my favorite games, but I wish there was a newer one...
One of my favorite Lucas Arts games. Just oh so much fun.
Please?
Beer.
what a fun game! i still fire it up and play even though it's base on the unreal tournament engine the play is not horrible and it gives you some cool modding capabilities. there are people out there who have extended it and added a plethora of maps, but an engine update would be nice.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing. Emo Philips
Yes, I know that it's not a true blue Populous game, and it plays like warcraft-lite. But I still find this game incredibly fun because the god powers are integrated into the game play with your shaman, not set outside of the field of play that acts upon the people. The strategies that involve sculpting the geography are a great deal of fun.
For a game that came out in 1998 with online play, it still lives on today with homebrew folks working on it. Too bad it hasn't had a true blue sequel though
I thought Syndicate was a fun one - I only played the original and non of the subsequent sequels. I wouldn't mind picking up an updated version of that.
... and don't do anything drastic with the storyline. I would like to see just X-Com 1 redone with modern technologically appropriate graphics. No FPS. No crazy "one city on earth" business.
I might accept some tinkering to morale with individualized leaders, but that's it. Minor dinking only.
I loved playing Hexen II, I still have the game and i would have loved to see a Hexen III.
Any other Hexen fans?
If you mod me down, I *will* introduce you to my sister!
Autoduel is still my single favorite video game of all time. It was a free-roamer, way before GTA, and the flexibility it offered with car design is still unmatched in my experience.
Auto Assault is also made by Lord British and Origin Systems (the makers of Autoduel), but was a MMORPG. I don't want to play MMORPGs. If they re-sold Auto Assault with a deep single-player experience, I'd be in gamer heaven.
"Once we've identified and embraced our sickness, we'll have strength...and that's when we get dangerous." - John Waters
Beyond Good and Evil by Ubisoft. Fantastic game. Also, Eternal Darkness by Silicon Knights. Whew... loved those two!
I'd like to see a sequel to "Shadow Of Destiny," a game for the PS2, but a sequel in the form of same basic premise (a character trying to prevent his/her death after being killed) but a new story.
One of the best things about the game was the story, which pulled you in and made you want to play the game to the end. If a sequel is done, it needs to have that too. It also have very good graphics for the time (a review mentioned that the graphics during the game plan were about as good as those during the cut scenes).
I always thought the tank was sweet in Blaster Master - one of my fav. NES games. Ultima Underworld was fun, but I guess Oblivion/Morrowind have the same basic interface. I liked the idea of characters who get thirsty or hungry and having to eat. I think you also had to sleep...
Also, an updated smash TV would be amazing

Syndicate! Seriously! I need that back SO BAD.
The original Black Crypt was about as great as they came in the Amiga days. Do a sequel, Raven!
I'd still like to see a PC port of the original game, too. One of the developers was working on it and there was a demo, but I don't think the full version has been released or even finished yet.
And no, not kingdoms
I haven't seen Syndicate mentioned. If it has, sorry but it was fantastic.
A decent 3D update of Syndicate with an easier to use interface would absolutely rock my socks off.
(And no, not Syndicate Wars. That was awful, but I don't know why.)

How about a new stealth fighter or tank platoon with all the depth of the originals? Just incredible what they got that old 286 to do :)
Arcanum 2 - The Revenge of the Brothel Sheep
First off, Shufflepuck Cafe was the coolest game I ever saw on a Mac. I also have a fond spot in my heart for the Mac version of Ancient Art of War.
The other deserves more than just a remake, it needs a new soundtrack to boot. The Adventures of Toejam & Earl. I can still hum the melody to that one.
I personally would like to see a Fallout IV that picks up after Fallout II. I know nothing about game engines, but it seems that the NWN Single Player engine could be converted/re-skinned for a Fallout IV. Considering that I spent $30 on NWN and have already logged a hundred hours playing (and still not finished), then I'd be happy to pay $100 for FalloutIV.
An excellent list. I'm a big fan of X-Com (UFO: Enemy Unknown in Europe), but the publisher never understood what made it a great game. They said, "Oh, people like killing aliens!" so they made shooters, fliers, etc all themed around the same thing.
What X-Com had going for it was a great tactical combat system. It was fire-tested in the team's previous Laser Squad Nemesis game, and worked great here. Plus, the marriage of the tactical battle game to the strategic research game kept the whole thing fresh. Throw in a little stat-building (what the kids these days call "RPG elements"), and you had a fun and varied game. The fact that you shot sectoids wasn't really important.
I think the other thing that hurt X-Com (and lots of other games from this era) was the craze to have 3D, real-time, and realism. You can find old reviews still online. It's amazing to see these great games slighted for not including the buzzwords of the time. When the publishers commissioned sequels, they had to implement buzzwords even if they didn't fit with the game.
Also, the notion of having a "hot property" blinds producers. They'll just recombine window-dressings from games, discarding the mechanics that made the games fun. It's a poisonous idea, and it's everywhere.
Use the Firehose to mod down Second Life stories!
Redline, if anyone remembers, was a tremendous FPS circa '98. It had alot of athe features taht modern FPS's are just now incorporating. The graphics were outstanding for the time and aren't too shabby now. I really don't know why the game wasn't more popular and why they (Accolade) didn't follow up with it.

They made me buy every damned game even that turd blood omen 2, and then they just stop with defiance. Finish the bloody series so I can kill the elder god and be happy.
And I second Wing Commander (many thanks to the poster who pointed me towards wing commander saga) and Duke Nukem. Actually it would also be nice to have a shadow warrior sequel - that game was funny as hell.
Reality must take precedence over public relations, for nature cannot be fooled.
It might not be an official X-Com sequel, but Laser Squad Nemesis is a really good spiritual successor by the same designers, with more of a multiplayer focus.
If there is a game that would benefit tons with nowadays 3D graphics, sound, lan multiplayer, etc. is this one. It boogles the mind that neither Electronic Arts nor a third party has not attempted a remake in over 20 years O_O
Seriously, the arcade game in the 80's was great and so was Goonies II on the NES. A new 2D platformer with a Cyndi Lauper soundtrack would be golden.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabriel_Knight
Gabriel Knight (by Sierra). I've spent quite a few hours on these. The puzzles were pretty tricky. Amazingly (or not), the version I enjoyed most was the first one. Despite much simpler graphisms, it had a great atmosphere. The second one was not very good, IMHO. I liked the scenario of the third one, although my machine at the time at a hard time coping with the 3D rendering...
Still, I'd buy a sequel without any hesitation.
Because I'm not holding my breath for The 13th Doll...
Star Command was a great SSI game, CGA/EGA, loads of fun. They should bring it back. You have to use moslo (a slow down utility) or similar to run it now. Has a great storyline that can easily be expanded. Speaking of, there is also the Starflight 3 project, which has been in development for years, and really needs to be finished. Those two games were excellent.
The brains of a chicken, coupled with the claws of two eagles, may well hatch the eggs of our destruction.

The new one for the Wii is actually pretty fun, and it's cheaper than the rest of the Wii library.

Enough with the Civ follow-ons! Time for Alpha Centauri 2!
There IS a sequel to Maniac Mansion; it's called "Day of the Tentacle" (and you can actually play the original Maniac Mansion on a computer inside it).
Yar's Revenge . True atari greatness
This was one of the most fun games to play... 3rd person perspective and they had (for the time) explicit death scenes that were funny. One weapon you shot lit the person on fire and they ran around in circles... fun times.
If only EA had not swallowed Origin we would have had an actual sequel to Crusader: No Remorse. Yes, there was No Regret but that was not really a sequel. It was like half the number of levels... I remember an article in Computer Gaming World back in 96 or 97 about how they were going to have a full sequel out in a year (this was right as No Regret came out).
If it where to have the same style of game-play except with a Wii controller, some better graphics, new challenges and weapons, and the same old poor translations with some voice-overs, it would prove to be very entertaining!
Try Silent Storm, its very similar to X-COM, except it's set in WW2, with lasers, and mechs.
Madden 2008?
Twinsen's Oddessy (yes, it was a sequel) was a great game. I'd love another one. Aside from gameplay, it had some of the best music I've heard in a game.
Definitely X-Com. Bring us back to that intensely creepy, suspenseful ambience that it had.
... or perhaps finished in the first place is Oni, which was a brilliant concept by Bungie that was short-circuited in the mix when Bungie was bought by M$. The primary trouble was that they had to kill multiplayer because it cannot handle any kind of lag at all, but also they never quite finished the single-player levels, cutting several of them out at the last minute. Even so, it was an exhilarating game to play, with a hand-to-hand combat system that actually *worked* and a third-person shooter combined into one seamless experience. Plus a protagonist who was much cooler and sexier than Lara Croft. :-)
Another game I'd like to see sequeled
I stole this sig from someone cleverer than me.
Either a sequel or a remake. The sequel at the time (X-Com: Terror from the Deep) wasn't an improvement. They used the same engine and even had the same broken difficulty setting. I think I'd rather see a remake with improvements.
Darn, I miss that game.
I'd really love to see another Full Throttle. If they can do a "redo" of Doom to Doom 3, I'd buy Deus Ex again - as long as they keep the gameplay as is, we can all forget Deus Ex 2.
Since Lucasarts ditched Sam and Max, are you guys still happy with the "mini" games released?
I'd ask for a sequel to System Shock 2 but I still never finished the game yet. Too darn spooky
It's also a pity X-Wing vs Tie Fighter (and Alliance) were pretty much overlooked during their time. Now with voice chat and 64+ player capabilities, wouldn't it be awesome for them to revamp their engines and just rerelease those?
I have yet to see Duke Nuke'm mentioned...so there...now it's mentioned

I agree. Screw sequels.
However, a *remake* of Torment that only updated the graphics + engine would be sweet.
I would buy Torment again (in a heartbeat) if they revamped the engine and left the story completely untouched. Same goes for Fallout, for that matter.
No sig.
Wasteland. One of the coolest RPGs ever, was successfully updated by InterPlay when they later released "Fallout". So I'd love to see an update to the Fallout line. I think there's something about post-apocalyptic games which intrigues my fancy.
Astro Tit
A treat to eat, in a puppet that's neat!
Usual suspects?!?! Bring back space flight sims, esp. Freespace and Starlancer/Freelancer.
I don't believe this sequel was ever completed. I guess Jumpman Jr. will be the end of the bloodline. :(
Without so many tanks.
'nuff said. But give me none of the PSOnline stuff. I want a good 'ol classic RPG game, with characters' names and an actual story. A return to the Algol Star System would be "most excellent".
No way! The last 5 sequels I purchased were great! Madden 2002, Madden 2003, Madden 2004, Madden 2005, Madden 2006...
:)
Money well spent
I was amazed that square didn't make a bushido blade 3 for the ps2. with its array of selectable weapons and fairly realistic damage system (you can get wounded, but 1 good whack with a sword can easily kill you) i always thought that bushido blade was one of the most innovative fighting franchises around. :'( ]
i think it's certainly time now, especially if they made it for the Wii and decided to go all out and do a better job of capturing sword swings than current Wii games [at least from what i've heard.... i still haven't played the Wii
or Zork
I'd like to see a modernization of Interstate 76.
Modern graphics, updated multiplayer, classic game play would be fine. Ideally adding a Car Wars like pricing system to spice up muliplayer dueling would be perfect.
I76 was a fantastic game, with a good story, immersive game engine style cut scenes, original funk sound track, and deep game play.
The dual challenge of designing a good car, and learning to drive it well kept me playing it for years. The game play stands the test of time, but the graphics are dated, and it's extremely difficult to get it to run on modern computers, or network past modern firewalls.
Sadly, Activision destroyed the franchise with a pair of sequels that were rushed out the door with buggy gameplay, and many undelivered promises.
...or you may get it. And be seriously disappointed!
:-)
I stopped wishing for a sequel to Grim Fandango about halfway through Thief: Deadly Shadows (the 3rd installment of that series). Deadly Shadows was a perfect example of tarnishing a great series... I would remember The first two games more fondly if I didn't have to think about the watered-down 3rd installment, and its compromises for the Xbox platform. A new Grim would most certainly not deliver the great experience that the original did, because a) the original creators are all off doing other things now, b) expectations of graphics quality have changed over 10 years and they'd try to make it look hyper-realistic, c) (insert your own reasons here, I'm no game design expert). You can't recreate magic, it just has to happen.
Instead, of pining for a sequel, I'm instead looking forward to sharing these games with my kids when they're a little older. My daughter loves Thief and is now competent enough to play it herself on the easiest level. Same with the original Half-Life. This is very satisfying for me, to see these games again through her eyes. That may not mean much to you youngsters out there, but some day you may find yourself sharing "Halo" or some other modern classic with your kids. So keep those old installation CDs around!
Cheers.
I'd like to see a sequel to this. Not "Lost".
While Descent 4 made the list, I would rather have a Descent Freespace III. That series was godly beyond measure. It did so many things right. Probably the best space simulation game ever. The dog-fights were intense. The capital ships were awesome, and after they added Beam Weapons, it was even more godly. Please, someone revive this dead genre. Please :(
I think a *great* sequel to Torment would be to play the other characters of the party, and your mission is to save the Nameless One from the war.
I rather enjoyed Cave Story, but eh, probably too new.
Today there expansion packs with additional content for many popular games. I would really enjoy if you could buy also upgraded engines for your classics: things like support for new graphics, sound, etc. Compatibility with new hardware (without emulation or similar) would be the priority - new artwork and extra content would be nice, but not necessary. And for a reasonable price.
That said, TIE Fighter FTW!
^[:q!
Now with ponies.
... and then they built the supercollider.
SimAnt, SimCopter, M.U.L.E., Oregon Trail (MMO!), Age of Empires 1 and 2 with modern engines, Starcraft, Xwing
SegaSoft owns "Rocket Jockey", which had an amazing Dick Dale surf guitar soundtrack and a Fallout-esque atmosphere. It was a FANTASTIC combat sport game that had elements of sports, racing, and demolition derby.
Even adopting a GTA feel to this game would make it the #1 game for many. And a Wiimote as a controller? That's genius.
Do you hear me people? ROCKET JOCKEY.
SunDog was a game that was only 200k in size for the Apple //e... but it had more features than most space exploration/trading games of today!
Use a GTA3-like engine, but keep the cheesy 50's theme and with its old-school brawlin' (no guns or cars). Keep the malls with lots to choose from and the character stats. Also, lame dialog is a must! More gangs and bosses than the original. Multiplayer with combiation attacks was also something that made RCR special. And somehow, try to fit Abobo in there.
I don't see how this game couldn't be a hit.
Freespace was one of the coolest games ever.. and 2 was kept everything that was cool about 1 only more of it.. more ships more aliens.. what was not too love? Espcially since there are no good space ship games any more, come on they would be so cool now. I want my Freespace 3!
Thank you for remembering that game. I always touted it as a "sequel" of sorts to others.
Final Fantasy VII tells possibly one of the best stories ever in PC games and whats more tells it very damn well. IMO this is the best of the Final Fantasies and it absolutely deserves a (playable) sequel. What's more the final ending leaves quite a lot of possibilities open for a sequel, however, unfortunately, advent children has kind of ruined any extension of the storyline now (although it did have some kick-ass fight scenes). Due to this I believe a modern remake with better translation and better graphics would be heaven on Earth and would hopefully bring this great game to many new gamers. Maybe it could turn a whole new generation of western console gamers onto RPGs like it did the first time (already hardcore gamers excluded).
Starflight II: Trade Routes of the Cloud Nebula is one of my all-time favorite games, and arguably better than the original. There was even a version made for Sega Genesis, IIRC (I had the Mac versions). I know that there have been some half-hearted attempts from fans to make another sequel, but they're obviously more caught up in dreaming about the ultimate sequel than actually doing any work. The original designers may be a bunch of old guys by now, but it would be great to have them on board with some younger programmers. They really understood how to make a great, open-ended game. If Sid Meier can still do it, these guys should be able to.
The versions of Starflight that I owned were EA titles. EA, if you're looking for a ground-breaking subject for future video games, look into your own back catalog!
...has taken up the belt. The fan-site. Good luck to him.
Chaos Overlords just BEGGED for a bigger, more ambitious remake. I've never spent so much time toying with something in my life. Except, well.. you know.. thoughts of world domination.
Beyond Good and Evil 2 (overly underrated, need to play more of this brilliance)
Shenmue 3 (so obvious, need to finish off the story)
Alpha Centauri 2 (inspired by a previous post and Civ games have nearly run their course, more space and fantasy!)
Chrono Trigger 2 (a real Chrono Trigger sequel, with Crono, Marle, etc.)
Suikoden II 2 (kinda like FFX-2, direct sequel, same characters, etc.)
If I ever played even one of those games, I would be a very happy man. I'm already generally a happy man but this would just top it all off.
Reviewing just the first hour of video games.
Descent was a good game, but the makers went on to make Freespace. All around a better game. And then there was the sequel, Freespace 2. And it was FANTASTIC. I can only imagine what they could do with what we have today. I really really want another sequel to it. Give it half as good a story as the first 2 and it could revitalize the space combat sim genre.
Unfortunately since Bullfrog was purchased by EA, I'm pretty sure that franchise is deader than a doornail. =(
First of all, Anachronox was Tom Hall's game. Romero was working on his game (Daikatana) while Tom was working on Anachronox. So Romero had little to do with it. Anachronox wasn't rushed (much), they took 4 years to develop the game (and it was actually quite large compared to most games). But ofcourse after what happened to Daikatana the publisher got scared, hence the bad sales.
The chance for a sequel is low because the rights are locked in at the publisher. Tom Hall wants to create a sequel, and would have if he got hold on the rights. Releasing it on a handheld is retarted, did the writer even play the game?
I had thought that the Alternate Reality series was hastily wrapped up with `The Dungeon'? Those games/times are sadly missed.
Didn't Magic Carpet have a sequel or two? I think it was called "Magic Carpet: Hidden Worlds".
Anyway, I'd love to see it updated! When I stick the old CD into my modern computer (after a DOS boot-disk, of course), it runs so fast I can't play.
Oh wait....nevermind.
First and last game I ever pre-ordered...
How about Syndicate
Technically, it did have 1 and a half sequels: American Revolt and Wars.
Revolt was an add-on and "new release" on a CD (wow, who'd have thunk it?) instead/in place of floppies.
Wars, IIRC, was overtaxing for most machines because of its use of a little thing called DirectX (3 or 4)
and lacked the steady balance of the original/S:AR. That killed it for a lot of ppl (and machines).
Great series, IMO, The original's reactor and escort (fricking lasers *everywhere*) missions were
fantastic, yet frustrating. American Revolt's missions were all long'ish and required skill, tactics
and some luck (Colorado territories started with incoming air strike--and music-- and enemy agents while the screen fades in from black. The Monty Python strategy of "RUN AWAY" worked best).
My submissions:
Max Payne 2.5: The rise and fall of max payne.
More of a remake, really, of the first one done with MP2's engine.
If there was a MP3 (heh) the vilianess from MP1 could be resurrected via cloning, on highest difficulty
in MP2, Mona lives and the "Dead Man Walking" concept could be used as a device for final level(s).
The "V" drug could be used as "reverse" bullet time or a drain.
Descent: D3 was a love-hate. Looked good, played great, sounded fantastic and plays smoothly on today's
hardware. Sadly, its OpenGL and Direct3D/DX were never quite right. You'd get HOM (hall of mirrors) or
stuck inside walls on occasion (or both). Official and unofficial updates helped, but not much.
And the "rubber ceiling" was an interesting trade-off for outdoor scenes.
Heretic 1 or 2: yeah it had a sequel, and by some extents Heretic3 would be Oblivion-esque, but the lightning
and phoenix bows + hellstaff + power up enhancement in combination with melee attacks (and masochistic chicken
practice) just yields a vicious "this is gonna be fun" grin, everytime.
Sadly, the game has a 25% or less success rate under XP, but works flawlessly under 2K.
Smarter ppl than I can't seem to find how/why this is. So it is "Try your luck" or install 2K.
(SIGH!)
One that *REALLY* needs a sequel is Hi-Octane. Other than NFS2 and FlatOut1, no other driving game has
held my attention so well. It, sadly, never got video acceleration of any kind (that I know of) and
would have been PERFECT for it. If it had even 1/3 of the eye candy of Pod Racer, it would put PR
to shame because of the fun factor.
BattleZone: Besides asteroids, tron (tank + cycles ='s bliss), and the atari 2600's tank game, BZ had
been fed so many quarters it was frightening. I was a non-believer when this came to the PC in a
different incarnation. Using two flight-sticks couldn't be done easily, and one stick was always
the 'should turn or slide be the hat/left or right/twist/key'. 10% of the time I'd forget during
critical moments.
Otherwise, the game was smooth, slick, innovative and genre crossing.
That crossing was something that even an over-caffinated multi-tasker would have a hard time
keeping up with. Bean counting/collecting and fire fights don't mix easily, and between RPG-ness and
FPS-ness, one was the awful bitter to the otherwise sweet game.
I recall a BZ2, but for the life of me they both blend into each other, but I recall both needing
a "can't deal with this now" feature/time shifting or slowing to pause between RM/FPS'ing.
Amazing how much money is being ungained by companies unwilling to remake our favorites (sam and max is back, IIRC, and only took about a decade'ish?).
HL1 under 2's engine would have brought tears of joy to gamer's eyes. (buuuut nooooo! {sulk} ).
Proving, a lot of "us" would be willing to "Play it again, Sam" (my arstechnica thread ref).
Have you read the moderator guidelines? Well, have you, PUNK? (and I want a Karma: Gnarly option)
SID MEIER'S ALPHA CENTAURI 2. I think I'd probably cream my pants if they announced it.
Atari Jaguar see a remake / sequel.
This game was just great. Scary visuals and excellent sound. I liked the sense of exploration the most. Moving throughout the game, looking for the cards, finding weapons, etc... was a lot of fun. The beauty of it was one did not need a manual. Just go poking around the game and you find stuff that suggests a greater story. Accessing the little computers and reading the stories of the dead crew for clues to the endgame was a nice touch as well.
Playing through as the different characters was a lot of fun as well. Each had their own strengths and made essentially three games with the same map.
It's a shame this wonderful interpetation of the AvP theme has not made it to more modern machines.
Yes, we have AvP games, but none are like this one.
Blogging because I can...
Please... System Shock 3. The only problem is that it's never being made. Bioshock is, but I doubt it's got SHODAN in it, and she's the coolest baddie ever.
How about Rescue Raiders using the TA:Spring engine?
:-)
PacMan the FPS. You versus the dots (go get 'em!).
A good modern Pinball Construction Set?
Rocky's Boots?
A modern Stellar 7. I used to play that for hours.

The Theorem Theorem: If If, Then Then.
I remember playing an old game for the NES when I was a kid where you played as a little blue robot who fought other little robots and took their weapons after he killed them. Someone should make a sequel to that.
EA purchased Bullfrog around 1995, ever since then Bullfrog has been dead IMO. Yet another great game company swallowed and killed by EA...
One of the best games made on the HL2 engine that was overlooked because HL2 was released the same day. yes the game was buggy as hell and the developers that made it broke up, not to mention the White Wolf rpg universe it is based on has ended. However, the game was awesome. Anybody who has not played it needs to find themselves a copy (probably find it for $5 in a bargain bin somewhere) and PLAY IT. If they make a sequel it will probably be set in the new game universe of vampire requiem, Which is fine by me since the rules actually give it a lot more freedom with the story.
I also would like to see another Hitman game but, I would like to see it made for the WII. The possibilities of the WII controller on a Hitman game makes me squirm with anticipation.
I know its only fairly recent but it was one of the better games of that year, nicely swept under the carpet by those who need lots of blood & explosions in their games.
I've experiments to run, there is research to be done on the people who are still alive.
Absolutely right. The story's finished, already. Another IE game set in the planes, I could see (and be interested in), but not about the same character.
On a similar note, what this nonsense about wanting a Baldur's Gate 3? We already had the third part of the trilogy; it was called "Throne of Bhaal". It wasn't as good or as long as the first two parts, but it certainly finished the story too.
In fact, I can't think of any games I'm longing to see a sequel -- or prequel -- to. I guess I'd be interested in a prequel to Undying, or a sequel to Full Throttle, but I'm scratching my head for ideas here.
If anyone out there remembers the original Battlezone game from Activision, then they remember also the great game play, the fantastic plot and the complex, yet elegant interface. The game combined simulation, first person shooter play, strategy and planning all in one great game. I'm still looking for the expansion packs (The Red Odyssey). A new sequel that faithfully recreates and updates the original Battlezone game would be incredible and would be an instant hit. If that game received half of the exposure of some of the sad games on the market today, we would not be able to keep them on the shelves.
Ididn'tdoitnobodysawmedoityoucan'tproveanything!
And PS1 owners will find it in Pong: The Next Level.
I would really love to see a sequel to this Sinclair Spectrum classic.
Perhaps in sequel the lines would be colored differently?
This game was released by Vivendi in the middle of the last gens life-cycle for all 3 consoles (GC,PS2,XB). It was one of the most creative and high-value purchises I ever made. It was a 3rd person shooter with a great camera, and decent graphics coupled with about 50 hours of gameplay across literally TONS of environments. The multiplayer was also incredible and very Halo-like. What made the game great was the humor in the cut scenes and the length of the playtime. It was a great game- 3 times longer lasting single player than most shooters. Every last bit of it was incredible.
Seriously. I know it *just* ended, but half the ending was devoted to the devs going "sequel plz", and providing some very good hooks to justify it. I can't bear the last scene being the series' ending. It feels way too wrong.

My playwriting professor in college did voice work for the (1999) Wing Commander movie. For extra credit, we were told to rent the movie and write a 1 page essay on why it was so goddamn awful.
Please, do not make sequels of these games. Ive stopped gaming and am now happily enjoying yoga and meditation. My life is now complete and perfect, please, please dont botch it for me now!

Ultima Underworld I & II

Another World
Best games ever. If they ever come in a decent sequel, I will have to start playing again

That's true, the sequel definitely should not revolve around the main character from Torment. But then that begs the question, how do you adopt the immortal mechanic without making it seems a trite replay?
With a universe as odd as planescape, immortality wouldn't be a unique feature to characters. Besides even coping out and havign some demigod with a vested interest revive ya could work too. I manage to grin through torment without needing to die. I enjoyed it a lot just due to having charisma and wisdom play a critical roll as opposed to most DND VG's which becoem power player scenarios. optimizing STr, dex, con.
"There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy."
Who wrote this article? It reads like it was written by a hurried high school student...
"Blizzard North may be history, but Diablo remains to be one of the biggest RPG properties in existence."
"The game still has a regularly Planet site, believe it or not."
I realize that was sarcasm, but I actually liked Duke 3D, and I still prefer it to Doom for some good old-fashioned Deathmatching. The Devastator is just fun.
No matter how late, no matter how much it sucks, I will be playing Duke Nukem Forever. The only question is whether I'll drop $50-60 on launch day (or pre-order) or whether I'll wait a few months and buy it for $20 off Steam or something.
I mean, come on -- Duke Nukem is one game that it should not be hard to make a good sequel to.
Don't thank God, thank a doctor!
Syndicate and XCom are my two biggest agreements there, although I agree with all of them.
Syndicate and XCom are two of my favorite games of all time, and I really wish they'd stop screwing around with the XCom franchise and make a real sequel not some BS totally different game with the same name.
And yes, the loss of Bullfrog was a sad day. Those guys were, in my books, the best game designers the world has ever seen, with more original ideas and new concepts than any other development crew.
I hate printers.
Quake, with its early GL patches for my old Rendition card, was the game that really made me appreciate 3D gaming. Sure, there have been sequels for both Quake and Doom, but they all have space-based, futuristic themes.
The original with its dungeons and grottos and cathedrals had a much creepier ambience that I would like to see re-done with the modern rendering engines and graphics chips. I guess I'll keep my fingers crossed for Quake 5...........
Here you go
Nuff' said.
Talking of the Bullfrog era, how about Bitmap Brothers? I'm still hoping for Speedball Arena.
I'll also add my voice to the requests for Descent and Dungeon Keeper.
The rest of my gaming memories are best left to the haze, as I discover each time I try MAME or abandonware...
.
. hmmm
The thing that always made Descent stand out was the ability to move in the Z axis and control roll. This made it far more challenging and interesting, IMHO. I wish there were more games that broke out of the strafe-jump mold like Descent.
DRM 'manages access' in the same way that a prison 'manages freedom'
Betrayal at Krondor has to be one of the most unique gameplay RPGs out there, especially when it was created.
It was such a big world, and the storyline was pretty set, but everything in the world changed for each chapter that you played through, you could literaly spend weeks on side quests (not like Daggerfall when you could feel it was generated, here you had hand-made sidequests that only 1-3% of the players playing the game would even see).
It did have a semi-sequel in Betrayal at Antara, but it was different people developing (if I remember correctly, didn't find any resources about this), and definitely didn't have the same feel in any elements.
I've been tempted to go back and play it, but it has some flaws that quickly become annoying (you have to stop to turn, etc) - but it was a great game when it came out.
I'd play it again in an instant with just a slightly different engine, same storyline and magic system.
Carmegeddon is the greatest game ever made, maybe not but another sequel would still be great.

Imagine a FLEET of a couple dozen Galaxy-class crusing down the spaceways - maybe with some Draymans if you've really got some money - holds full of cargo, actual players manning the turrets, with eight or ten Centurions running escort.
Think about how sweet it would be to run your own trading post, along with a dozen of your online buddies, and get filthy stinkin' rich... but occasionally have to climb into a turret or Orion to defend your claim on the base.
If you really want to have some fun, go join the Church of Man and swarm the hell out of Confed patrols. Tough to get rich, but you sure will stay on your toes!
man. the possibilities were ENDLESS. :(
The pain was excruciating and the scarring is likely permanent, but that just means it's working.
Hands down the best combat system I have ever played (surround and support bonuses made it a tactical delight), but the AI was flakey, and the game could have been the basis for so much more.
How about customizable tanks, or a larger context for the battles (a la Civ)? Multi-player and naval battles. Nukes and resources. Whatever. Just give one more try at an impossible map, or random maps. Something where placement matters just as much as production.
No, no it's not. It's fucking chess with aliens.
Shut up and go play chess.
New versions of Tempest and Battlezone that run properly in XP. Now, THAT was GAMING. And how about a spinner controller for USB that does what it's supposed to do? What's so difficult about a rheostat or digital ticker, folks? You used to do it for ball mice all the time. Get with it.
It's one of my fav's from the original playstation. Hopefully they'll either remake it or make a sequel/prequel for it. A prequel would be good if it was set during the Dragon Campaign, showing everything that the humans had to do in order to free themselves from the tyranny of the Winglies. It would make for an excellent game, just give it free roam instead of having to travel on a set course. I have always enjoyed playing it (and still do) more than FF7, even though it's supposed to be on of the greatest RPG's of all time.
Nothing inspires forgiveness quite like revenge.---Scott Adams
Even if nothing else, just add internet play and bring the pc graphics up to Amiga level. If a couple of tracks could be added that are just as good as the original two, that would be good.
Irrational Games are making a sequel named Bioshock. It will be published by Take 2 Interactive. http://www.bioshock-online.com/
"EA bought Bullfrog." It has been a part of EA since 1995, and dimished as a company in 2004. It's a part of EA UK now. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullfrog_Productions
Origin is dead. Chris Roberts is too busy making big block busters.. who knew after Wing Commander: The Movie. They totally killed the series with Prophesy and Privateer 2. If you are a WC fan try playing X3: Reunion its a lot like privateer and pretty. Got good reviews and its cheep off Steam. /Good to see there are still WC fans around. Privateer was da poop. //Lucas Arts can suck it! I want my Loom 2 and MI 5!
Uhm, Maniac Mansion was rehashed. It was called Day of the Tentacle, and it was one darned good game, just like its predecessor.
Anyway, what I would like to see done is the Chrono Trigger remake project that a group attempted a while back. It was called Chrono Trigger: Resurrection and absolutely amazing things were done to take the game 3D in a way that actually WORKED (hard to imagine I know -- most games end up loosing all of the game's real value when they go 3D.) What was probably most surprising, though, was the fact that the whole project had a kind of refined look to it that made the whole game look and feel like a professional project all along -- as if it may have even had a real budget complete with paid professionals working on it rather than a group of very patient fans. Normally fan projects like that result in a visual/audio quality that has just a "cheap" feel to them. All I can say is that most of the screenshots just look absolutely stunning and even I wouldn't mind playing Chrono Trigger like that.
The project looked to be getting very close to being able to release a beta. All the basics were in place with the engine more or less complete and a fair bit of story in place.
Unfortunately, with the project so close to early release stages, Square had to kill it. I don't remember the exact words, but the plain and simple gist of it was "you're developing something based directly on a game we made (the fact that it is no longer for sale even in its PSX reincarnation is ignored here) and we demand that you cease." What bugs me about this is that, instead of killing off such an incredible project that could not have done anything other than foster more interest in the Square name, all they had to do was just try to work out a deal with the authors where they buy the rights to it (or maybe even acquire them for free) and then sell it. People would have bought it. Heck, I have next to no money and hardly ever buy any games since I just can't afford it, but I'd buy that one if it were being sold.
I don't have a URL for the project, but, if anyone is curious, just google for it. They left the site up in its final state including a forum last I checked, so you can find out all the little details on what happened withjust a little quick skimming. I recommend that you avoid the trailer and screenshots though since the only thing that can really achieve is making you all the more dissapointed that you'll never really see it.
That was one of the coolest features, the only other game I've seen it done well in was Fallout. In both games intelligence had a big effect on what you could say, and charisma had a big effect on how people reacted to what you said.
Fanatically anti-fanatical
Magic carpet is still a fun game its graphics were years ahead of any other game 3D wise. I even have magic carpet II runing under XP, though getting sound emulator to work is touch and go it was my faveroute game .. until I got descent.
I would give my right arm for a Magic carpet III... I once tried emailing Bullfrog about it but never heard back.
It was, the Wilderness, Arena and Palace were the planned sequels that never got made.
=/
// "Can't clowns and pirates just -try- to get along?"
First of all, a proper successor for Master of Orion 2. That was an awesome TBS, easy to figure out, difficult to master, and not too heavy. MoO 3 just plain sucked compared to 2. Then we have Heroes of Might and Magic 3. Now, there's been two sequels, but to me 3 is still by far the best of the bunch, and I'd love to see a sequel that takes the working, balanced game, updates it to today's standards, and adds new stuff. Already mentioned in few posts, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri was in my opinion by far the best Civilization game, even if it wasn't under the same name. A sequel would be a must-buy for me. Also, it wouldn't hurt to get a Fallout 3 that's actually like the original games, intead of an Oblivion clone as bethesda seems to be planning.
Alas... no selling is going to happen here. Already there are open-source engines (but not content) for the first two installments.
I was able to grab the 3-disc compendium ("Definitive Collection") with original content, contest-winner levels and the D2 "Vertigo" levels all in one set. It's never really been put away. I've wondered if there are any new copies of D3 left? [checks eBay...] yep.
If Blizzard can do for SC what Ensemble did for AoE, and keep an interesting campaign, I'll buy it!
Didn't anyone remember the D3D patch for XvT? That was the first, and IMO most-awesome sim' for SW-themed games.
