Oh well. We can bitch and complain our asses off, but the stories won't change. The ironic thing is that I bet this message will be mod'ed to Redundant 'cause a dozen other/.'ers will make the same point noted here.
<sigh>
To be more on topic, the only reason I'm up this late, asking for bad karma on slashdot, is because I'm to wired up on caffeine to go to sleep
FYI: It's about 2:35am for me as I hit the submit button
Why are Mac bigots such name droppers? Why do you assume I'm a PC bigot? Because Windows runs on a PC, and you assume I'm a Windows user?
Microsoft/TacoBell/Britney Spears world, quality is sorely lacking
Well, I won't say much for Microsoft/TacoBell, but Britney Spears has talent. I mean, dance and sing.
For those of us who value beauty, elegance, design and quality... blah blah blah
So, apparently, you know all about quality, taste, and what works; All without thinking about it.
Note to those of more even temper: Macs suck at some things. I know this. They're just not the things I need them to do, so I don't much care. They're just tools.
And now you try to be fair. Well that's nice...
...in all fairness, I don't really believe that Apple products fit the bill of being tasteful, or are of a quality that is valuable to me.
Oh yeah, and if you don't want people being so 'foul mouthed', maybe you should stop speaking for them, neither directly, or through insinuation
Mediocre my ass. My Pentium 700 does SETI units in 12-13 hours. My G4 450 does 'em in 5-6 hours. With numbers like that I don't need to talk about Photoshop performance... and I do quite well at Quake3 with 40-50 fps, so don't tell us the Rage 128 is crap. It's not a GeForce but it's not crap.
Fuck. I didn't say crap. Where the fuck do you read the word 'crap' in that comment? I said mediocre, as in big fucking deal. So Apple has yet another pretty little case to stick a computer in. Is this really big and important news?
From Apple's Website: The 450MHz Power Mac G4 Cube comes ready for action with Mac OS 9, 64MB of high-performance RAM, 1MB of backside level 2 cache, a capacious 20GB Ultra ATA/66 hard disk drive, DVD-ROM drive with DVD-Video playback, and the ATI RAGE 128 Pro graphics card with 16MB of graphics memory.
Wow. Sounds mediocre to me. All that mediocrity for $1,800! What a frickin' bargain!
Personally, I think it's more impressive to have a computer that looks like a freaking beast from a block buster monster movie that a pansy looking flower from never never land.
--- Call me a freak, but I've been thinking (well, rather phantasizing) about writing that ubervirus. ---
Then bring it on, code boy. Seriously, I'd like to see you try. I believe you'd have the guts to pull something like that off; Oh, and the 'know how' too! Really!
Well, you know what? I've already coded the blasted thing! Yeah, that's right! However, because I'm such a nice super geek with sooper dooper coding ability with the power to bring the world to it's knees...
...I've decided to destroy the code so it may never fall into the wrong hands
--- "Why did you do it?" "Because I could." I still think that is the best and the most honest answer such a person with above average intelligence could give. Boredom and frustration combined with a chance for a worthy intellectual challenge. Add a political or a personal motivation (vengeance against a person/society/human race, for instance) to that and it suddenly becomes very tempting. ---
Sure, but creating an ultimate virus with power to kill the internet... Compare that with weapons with the ability with wiping an entire country off the map. That's power that (I hope) people with 'above average intelligence' are smart enough not to mess with. For one, it threatens to destroy something that that person wouldn't want destroyed. Also, how many people would nuke a country simply because 'they could'?
Yeah baby, that's tempting.
When someone does something 'because they could', that person is probably not trying to be malicious on that grand of a scale.
Intelligence and good moral sense grow in relation to each other - unless you're frickin' insane
But really, who is going to code something like this? I mean, if somebody has the time and know how to do something like create an awesome ubervirus, are they really going to it? ...Wait a minute... I'm forgetting about the Unabomber.
Anyway, what I was going to day is that it seems that most of these new, terrible viruses are created by people who have some know how, but for the most part, are pretty much idiots
It would have to take either a brilliant madman, or a corporate/government sponsored team of bright people to create something like that - not script kiddies and hacker wannabes (not even your typical/.'er).:P Besides, what incentive (I mean really) would these entities have to do so?
The Petroleum Industry is what makes the world go 'round.
Seriously, take away OPEC, and suddenly, first world countries are in a panic. Like it or not, we are as dependant on Oil and Gas as we are on computers; This is just not for the reason that we need gasoline to power vehicles either. It's because we need the Petrol Industry to keep our market afloat.
Living in Alberta, Canada (a 'have' province), this reality is very apparent. The success of Alberta's economy is almost directly related to oil and gas. If this industry was to disappear, then my province would be a very poor one indeed.
It's in my opinion that ridding the world of the Petrol industry is not in the best interests of any first world nation. I do believe that technology exists to completely remove peoples' dependance on gasoline, but not our economy's dependance.
Indeed, slashdot is the perfect example. When people learn to play the community game of slashdot by adjusting to become a well-formed poster, they lose their original opinions (which may have been "flamebait" or just plain "overrated") and turn into a member of the community sheep. We are, as I said above, losing our ability to think individually by letting other people (the moderators) think for us.
And how many opinions have you lost? Seriously, have you restructured any of your views to avoid "[conflict] to the community"? I know I certainly haven't, and I doubt that many others have either; At least not in the sense that you seem to be saying.
My ability to think is alive and well. Any of my posts that get marked down as "flamebait" or "overrated" hasn't done anything to change my opinions. However, what it has done is make me more hesitant to post.
Our ability to think is not lost. It's just that the thinkers end up leaving the discussion to those who already are sheep.
Perhaps Napster should work together with online CD sellers. But then I suppose everybody would bitch about 'advertising' in their software.
The way it could work is that Napster would detect the artist or song that is being played, and show a banner that says "Like this music? Buy their CD!" with a link to an appropriate CD sales site.
This Agreement will terminate ninety (90) days after the date on which you receive the Software. Upon such termination you will delete or destroy all copies of the Software.
Darn. I'd better delete my copy on day 89... ...just to be safe
Or better yet - maybe I just won't download it at all.
but if you proceed and say "ergo I don't care".. don't expect those desktop users to care about you, or your favorite OS...
That's part of what bothers me: The people that stress that everybody should care.
Hmmm... Maybe the term I'm looking for is somewhere along the lines of 'Linux Zealot'? Or maybe it's the same thing that bothers me about the PC vs. Mac style wars.
So can you really be happy to keep Linux in the niche,
Yup
avoid it's commercialization,
I don't avoid it. I don't actively endorse it either.
and at the same time cry out for cooler games and cooler multimedia native to Linux ?...
Sorry. I don't cry out for games and multimedia for Linux. What I mean by toy is the fact that it is open source and I can tinker with the internals to learn and experiment.
The cool apps/tools I'm referring to are the hacks done in order to make a task easier. Neat stuff like awk, perl, shell scripting, and a whole shwahck of other tools that can be used with each other to aid creating hacks. It's the fact that I can have a UNIX OS on my desktop with a compiler. This is what I like; This is what I hope will not change.
UI for the average user can suffer. If a hacker wants a better UI for his/herself, then that hacker will hack on up for his/herself.
I don't feel that geeks must cater to the rest of the world.
It doesn't bother me the Linux is small fries. It can stay that way. BSD can stay that way. It's not going to stop people (geeks) from developing on these platforms. The cool apps/tools will not stop coming through.
The push to commercialize Linux bugs me. It bugs me because people get stupid over it. Maybe they feel that Linux will disappear if it doens't happen. MY feelings are, if it does disappear, it's probably because a better toy has emerged. So, it's been shown that Linux just isn't a toy anymore. It can compete with the big boys. Well Hur-RAY! (sarcasm).
Bill Gates can make his billions, and Macintosh can rule the world of user friendly. They can either embrace or oppose Open Source - That's not going to take away my toys.
Oh well. We can bitch and complain our asses off, but the stories won't change. The ironic thing is that I bet this message will be mod'ed to Redundant 'cause a dozen other /.'ers will make the same point noted here.

So, yeah: Mediocre your ass.
And throw some more cash here, and there, and there also...
In the early way of Linus Torvalds, I'll stick with the hardware that I can afford.
From Apple's Website:
The 450MHz Power Mac G4 Cube comes ready for action with Mac OS 9, 64MB of high-performance RAM, 1MB of backside level 2 cache, a capacious 20GB Ultra ATA/66 hard disk drive, DVD-ROM drive with DVD-Video playback, and the ATI RAGE 128 Pro graphics card with 16MB of graphics memory.

Just watch and see that Microsoft is behind the DDoS attack on Slashdot... :P
Punishment for crossing them?*

Alright then... bring it on
Something has to be done, or we will not have as much great music as we do.
So, unless a "great musician" can make several million dollars from his/her music, "great music" will be on the decline?
If you don't like Office, then you haven't learned to really use Office.
Hmmm... How does that saying go?
80% of users only use 20% of a software's capabilities
AND, where I work, it's more like 90% to 2%.
